Gary Ayres makes his return to AAMI this week.

I call on all Adelaide supporters to treat him with respect and not the cowardly way the Geelong supporters treated him when he returned to SHell Stadium each year.

Ayres tried his best for Adelaide and if not was not due to the loss of Edwards and Macca in the Prelimiary Final we could have been looking at a Grand Final Coach in 2003.

Ayres made the Crows a competitive outfit for much of his time at the club. He made the Crows a tough competitive side week in week out for most of his reign and certainly on the road.

In the end he ran his race with no cigar.

Lets hope we recognise this rather than giving cheap verbal shots to the man who gave his all for the club for 6 years. We are a better club than this. Lets show the rest of Australia the fine culture we have at the AFC and the fact that we appreciate the work that has been done by people in the past to help make this side what it is today.

Could have something to do with the situation he left us in, and the way he left, but that's a different story!

Firstly it was 2002 when we nearly made the GF

I agree though about Ayres, he was the first AFC coach to get the team in three straight finals series and took a side which Rucci labelled as finished and made them into a regular finalist and nearly got us to the GF in 2002.

He did have his flaws and I think most will remember his inability to coach us to victory in showdown games.

All in all Adelaide could have done a lot worse with their selection of coach for 2000*cough* D Hart *cough*

After the events of the weekend at the Telefone Dome I would hope no one gets into a verbal with Gary.

I was just thinking the same. I don't think anyone will say anything to coaches walking down now, it's a curse.

he did a good job as a coach, it was unfortunate that we did not win a premiership with him, but he did a good job as a coach - after all he could have been a lot worse.

i've met him quite a few times, and he has always been lovely, seemed to always have time for fans.

i've got nothing against the guy...

but yes, his hair does look stupid though.. :p

for me, all I am waiting for is to see if he has learnt to not pull his pants way up over his navel and with his shirt tucked in. :o

why should there be any reason to boo Ayres?

- he is a former Crows coach who inherited a rabble at the end of 1999, he made us into a competitive unit and a regular finals participant, and with a little luck could have had us in the grand final in 2002.

- in 2003 & 2004 we had Carey but unfortunately thru injury we could never get our dream forward set-up of Carey,Stevens & Welsh all together on the field at the same time - who knows how far we could have gone - luck and injuries always play their part

- it appears that his biggest failure may have been the lack of development of younger players, however, i think the club itself must share that blame.
Our focus was primarily short term - on winning a premiership (and rightfully so) given the star studded midfield we were blessed with - unfortunately due largely to injury (as above Stevens, Carey, Welsh) we did not achieve that.

- he also inherited a playing list with no real "second tier" as Blight's years gave us little in that regard.

- how many of our young players would have got a game this year had there not been injuries? Even Craig will have difficulty giving young players game time at the same time as having a genuine tilt at the premiership - "fortunately" he has had a run of injuries to help him in this regard.

- having defended Ayres, i still recognize his faults and certainly Craig has a rare ability to develop and bring out the best in most of the players but i dont think that Ayres deserves any boos or whatever - IMO he should be welcomed back as a loyal former coach - lets face it, most coaches end up getting sacked in the end but that should not mean that they should be condemned

Rucci took legal action against Gary Ayres after he called him a liar, didn't he Passamore?

yeah he did. it must be frustrating for Rucci to know that he will never be accepted into the football fraternity, whereas Ayres is still footy royalty.

must be a terrible feeling knowing a guy who you don't like has it all over you ;)
