Mid season is almost upon us, time for a mid-year review and a few predictions.
Team / Mid-season prediction / Pre-season prediction / Current position
Old Melburnians / 1 / 1 / 2.
Just cruising along at the moment, not setting the world on fire. Doing only what's required, look out if they get up & about. They've got some serious talent at the top end, a lot of whom haven't really hit their straps yet. Without doubt the best depth in the comp with 2's and 3's undefeated. Will win the the flag.
SKOBS / 2 / 2 / 3.
Awesome on-ball unit with Simpson, Dowd and Mahoney. Some dour defenders and a couple of talented forwards. Will go very close but I don't think they're as good as OM's. Will feature very prominantly in the finish.
Old Trinity / 3 / 4 / 4.
The smokey of the comp. Like OMs, haven't hit their straps yet but could be very dangerous when they do. Struggled to get all of their stars on the park, look out when they do. Will probably just miss out on the grand final.
St Bernards / 4 / 8 / 1.
Like the way they go about it and have a very strong home advantage. Probably two or three key position players / forwards away from being a real threat though. A club going in the right direction, Ben Jordan is a super star at 33.
Ormond / 5 / 9 / 5.
Very good on their day, particularly at home. Have dropped a few they should have won which will prove costly for their finals aspirations. Good year for them to consolidate in B grade.
Uni Blacks/ 6 / 7 / 7.
Disappointing thus far. Have had some injury concerns but should have done better with their list. Won't be a relegation threat but will not push for finals either. Wonder where they are headed…
Old Haileybury / 7 / 6 / 9.
Ordinary club with a lot of ordinary blokes. They will call on their stars to pull to together to ensure they stay in B grade so relegation should not be a problem. Have to wonder where the club is headed long term.
Old Carey / 8 / 3 / 8.
Injuries have decimated their once promising season. Will get a lot of those back though throughout the year which should enable them to avoid relegation.
Hampton Rovers / 9 / 10 / 6.
A good young side that has a crack. Can be dangerous at home but probably lack a bit of polish. Unfortunately I think they will struggle to stay in B grade although they could well prove me wrong with g&d to burn.
Old Camberwell / 10 / 5 / 10.
A lot of their stars have already jumped this sinking ship. Back to C Grade I would have thought, can't see them digging themselves out of this one.
Great sumation there Barass. I think OT are the ones who will surprise at the end of the year. Experience and old stages to show them how its done.
Old Haileybury will pull themselves out of the hole - I hear they have a few of their big names back this week. Old Carey and Old Camberwell to slide on back to 'C' grade.
Oh and I agree, Haileybury have some very very very ordinary blokes down there.
Interesting summary Ron - Relegation is a wide open battle that will throw up plenty of upsets in the back half of the season. My only comment about the top 4 is that the current $8 available on St.Bernards appears to be 'overs'.
A couple of poor weeks so I need to lift in the tips.
Rivalry round???? Reasons for rivalry from VAFA HQ attached
OLD CAREY v OLD CAMBERWELL - both start with C
ORMOND v HAMPTON ROVERS - both district clubs
OLD MELBURNIANS v UNI BLACKS - Lacey went to Melb. Grammar
OLD TRINITY v ST KEVINS - both have green on their jumper
OLD HAILEYBURY v ST BERNARDS - um both were coached by Peter Nicholson?
You might be right about Carey MIO and they might storm home with blokes returning from injury.
Not sure they "almost toppled" OMs last week though. Could only manage five goals for the game...

Haileybury by 29, Harvey, Loewe and Brown back, easy win.
Camberwell by 50 plus, Kingsley to kick a dozen.
Hampton by 10, they will play finals.
Trinity by 100 plus, cant stop Iezzie, Krak, Cults, Heals or Rambo, he's DELIIIIIIICIOUS.
Uni Blacks by 34, ready to step up into the fray.
Frase, Ormond are playing SKOB next week!Ha!!! Not bad hey boys and girls...all the way from the UK and still I am the gospel. If not for plucky Ormond I would be 5 from 5....damn I'm good.
So this is how it is...
Camberwell on the up, Hampton still look the goods, my spies tell me Iezzi ran free like a dog at the beach(bad coaching SKOB) so my boys are up and about and absolute premiership favorites.
SKOB on the other hand will plummet to the edge of relegation, mark my words, OM's are hiccupping to third, Ormond always hard to beat and will be fifth, whilst the Blacks are almost safe.
Carey will beat a faltering SKOB next week to make the relegation race even tighter.
Over and out my little friends.
Frase.
Frase, Ormond are playing SKOB next week!
Scrappy game at the Gunn yesterday, probably one of our worst for the year, but the main thing is that winning ugly still gets you 4 points.
Close all day, with Hampton having more of it early, but couldn't capitalise on the scoreboard. Good last qtr by the 'Monds against the breeze, Digger still killing it & if Martinov ever kicks straight he will kick big bags.
Good tough win to Ormond as Gunn said they won ugly.
Some bad sportsmanship was shown be the coach of Hampton after the game by not shaking hands with Russell Barnes. Win lose or draw Barnes always goes over and shakes hands with his opposition coach.
All the Hampton players and a fair few supporters came up for a drink which was in the true spirit of Ammo footy, so good on them but not Sheldon, he let his club down badly.
Fraser, good to see FTE got red carded, hows life on the coast? Im down here now relaxing, just went for a paddle.
