I would be very surprised if it is anyone but Old Carey winning the premiership this year. I reckon OC could match it with any of the top sides in Premier/A Section next year.

Jascave, with all due respect, you are surely taking the p*ss?? No doubt they are the team to beat this year (as I've stated in early posts) but I don't think you appreciate the difference in level between A and B and particularly at the top of A!!

You need to remember that OC have never even played a bottom A grade side before in their 50 year plus history let alone take on "any of the top sides" in anger - its a very different kettle of fish you are dealing with!

If you want to get a feel for how they would go I would suggest that you compare them to OM's from last year and see how they measure up (very competitive with the 1's, would be smashed off the park in the 2's) or STBM from a few years back (would be very much up against it in the 1's and smashed in the 2's) and you start to see where they stack up. Can't remember the results from last year but pretty sure OM's had the better of them (can anyone confirm/correct??)

Still, good convo starter on a Friday morning Jas so kudos for that!!!

It's comparing apples and oranges, Plumber. I'm not suggesting Jase is right, but they OC we've seen over the last 6-8 weeks is a much stronger outfit than the OC we've seen in 2009 and the early part of this year. I can't comment on 2008 as we were in C Section. Hard to imagine they'd threaten the top few in A Section, but the basis of your argument doesn't carry a great deal of weight.

I humbly disagree Mick - my experience in A grade is that being good for a 6-10 week period simply doesn't cut it in A grade and so you have to look at their performance over the course of a full season to get the full picture.

The reason I picked OM's as the first example was that, IMO, they were clearly the best club in B grade last year by dent of the fact they finished on top in the 1's and 2's and won 4 flags during their combined finals campaign. They have done well to consolidate themselves in A grade this year but they haven't got near challenging any of the top clubs.

The STBM example was of a club that did challenge the top teams in A grade with great success. They went through to A grade on the back of a 16-2 season (SKOB beat them by 9 points and they lost the other by a kick from memory) and were, IMO, a cut above any team I have seen since then.

The fact that OC did start so slowly and have hit a great patch of form over the last 10 weeks indicates, to me, a team that is up and about. I still have question marks over their depth (as they seem to have had very few injuries by all reports and the 2’s are only so-so) and I think this plays a massive part in determining their success or otherwise at the top level.

IF, and its still and IF, they do make in through to A grade they could reasonably expect to pick up a few recruits and get stronger again but they will need to do this to remain stationary.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts

Jascave you are delusional. From what I have seen most teams going up to the big show will be lucky just to stay there. Yes OC are the form team but they're not that good. They would be below OS and St.Bedes. You forget that they have never been there and as previously said, its more the mental side that new clubs struggle to get a grip on.

Our mates from OE in 2008 were a better side than OC in 2010 (imo) when they were promoted. They just couldn't handle the pressure, and once that side of your game is lost, the rest just caves in.

If OC are promoted, from the 1st bounce of the 1st practice match, the existing A Grade teams will be at them. They will know which way each player does up his shoe laces!! It can f**k your mind up. Physical ability accounts for 45%, mental ability 55%.

But you never know if you don't have a go.

Max out

Fair call. There are some very valid points, however I still don't agree with your initial argument of comparing them to other sides. Momentum is a beautiful thing and if they can roll on unscathed through to the big day and get the recruiting right in the off-season, I see no reason why they can't be competitive in the top flight next year. I guess I'll know a lot more after tomorrow, but recent form suggests they have every right to be confident of themselves moving forward.

My take is, with 9-1 win/loss over the last 10 rounds (198% over those weeks), Old Carey will go in to the finals as one of the hotter favourites through the Grades. Its a different competition now to when sides such as Old Ivanhoe (now 6th), Krushers (7th), Hampton (8th), Old Essendon (9th) beat them early on.

Regarding Premier A, I would say for sides that haven't been in the top section at all (or in many a year), just concentrate on what's on offer this season. Worry about next year later, it will come around soon enough.

Old Carey seem to have a good blend of players, are fit, and play for each other but no side is unbeatable in a final.

OOB

Looks a reasonably straightforward round with probably only one ganme that needs to be considered.

Hampton Rovers v Old Carey
Old Ivanhoe v Oakleigh
Old Essendon v Uni Blacks
St Bernards v Old Haileybury
St Kevins v MHSOB

Yeah - probably about right OOB. It would have been hard to imagine following their start they'd be 9W:1L and there is still a few weeks to go before the finals start so eveyone will be on a watching brief until then!

Should be a cracking finals series I reckon - all 4 teams will honestly believe that are a show which will make for some great games of footy!!

It looks like the match-up for the second semi final is now in place: Old Carey v St Kevins. But who will finish 3rd & 4th to decide the match up for the 1st semi final? Would it be out of Old Haileybury, Old Ivanhoe, Uni Blacks or St Bernards? Or could Oakleigh stage a late rally and even be in the finals at the last minute at the end of Round 18 on 21st August?

The highly credentialed independent assessor is over the moon at the standard of posts this week. No carlamity to get over and not one low non- footy sock - ah what a week. Footy focused, interesting, constructive and sociable. The insightful one is contemplating heading down to the cellar to seek out a bottle of “Grange” in celebration. What a week! What a team of posters! What a forum! :thumbsu:
