What did you think of the games of the younger guys like stants, ryder, slats, kep, monfries last night?
I was impressed with slats, he took a great mark going into the pack right before the final siren. Monfries tried hard all night, always is in and under which I like about him but not sure if he has the skills yet and the Kep on Hall experiment could have ended at about halftime but overall i was very impressed with the next lot of baby bombers.

They contributed and thats about all we can ask.

Slattery beat his opponent. Didn't get a lot of the footy, but was tough and hard.

Monfries was solid, didn't do anything outstanding (other than put his head over the footy), but didn't do anything wrong.

Ryder's tap work and mobility was brilliant. Only got pushed off the ball once, by Hall. His tackle to get his first kick was really positive and his effort on the city wing and then follow up to kick the ball forward off the ground was very good.

Stants was good again. Looks like Sheedy might be protecting him, which I think is a good idea.

Jobe was outstanding.

Some positives, no real negatives, but again, consistency is the key.

Ryders tapwork was absolutely brilliant even though he hardly got a kick. I liked when he soccered the ball on the wing and the crowd roared - i am sure he enjoyed that moment.

Watsons vision is up there with the best. Reminds me of Simon Black. He has that knack to handball out of a pack to a player who would seemingly be out of his vision 15 - 20 metres away. To me this is a more rare attribute than a player with electrifying pace breaking the lines. Whether he has the dedication long term as Black has had is going to be an interesting question.

Slattery looks like he has been playing for 10 years, very composed. I trust him when he is near the ball.

Does anyone know what is happening with Sam Lonegan? From photos he is built like a tank and looks almost ready to play senior footy bodywise.

Ryders tap work was exceptional, layc*ck and carts have got some serious competition because Paddy will not only take no 2 ruck spot but has the talent to take No 1 off Hille once he matures.

ryder - ruckwork impressive, and showed some good touch around the ground
watson - what an improvement losing that weight was!!! i allways rated him when i watched bendigo, and now he has finally put it together at afl level, vision was very good.
slatts - composed but yet to be fully convinced... will have a week or 2 off (trib)
stants - going to be a gun can't wait to see him by the end of the year
monfries - works very hard. still young and will improve, but courage is very impressive.
lovett - pace - blistering
lovett- murray - provided some good rebound off half back, and played allright i thought... worked very hard.

I hate it when people start getting on the bandwagon after one win and start barking.

Yeah paddy ryder's tapwork was impressive but gee i wish he looked more interested or put himself into positions where they could kick the ball to him in other words present himself when he goes forward. laycock still has ryder covered when he gets back from injury.

Monfries and stanton were the men for me, monfries especially when he put his body online, i just love that style of player.

I think what has people excited is that Ryder has done something we haven't had in our side for a decade. A bloke that can jump up and put the ball down the throat of our midfielders.

When we drafted Ryder we knew he was a good athlete and we knew he had good tap skills. We knew he could mark and jump and kick. One thing we didn't know was whether he could find some intensity in his game. He showed that, he showed second efforts, he even gave a 80m chase in the 2nd quarter. His first kick came from a very good tackle.

You're right he does need to find more of the footy, but I think everyone just presumes that he will make better position with experience. But again, what has people excited is that what he did in the ruck, you can't teach. It's natural.

I'd still pick Laycock ahead of Ryder. Even if it's only to protect him. But I don't think anyone is incorrect in thinking that Laycock has that second ruck spot all to his own.

no he won't. He'll take the reprimand I'd imagine, and will play next week.

I'm told that the debate about whether to take the reprimand or not was very vigorous, due to that very point ;)

What's exciting about Ryder is that he just doesn't get the ball and punch it, he taps it to Jobe, or Stans or JJ. Seeing it tapped straight to one of our own players is a massive difference, we haven't had that for a long time.

Ryder - Was very good, see him and Hillie doing a lot of damage
Watson - Best I've seen him
Slatts - Very impressive around the Ground
Stants - So good, only can get better, not his best game thou
Monfries - Outstanding game from him
Lovett - BOG, his pace, his skills, his disposal, his chasing, his second efforts all top class
Lovett Murray - Very good game, good pace

you're right absolutely, we havnt had a great tap ruckman since salmon/madden. I was very impressed the times he won it when and we got a centre clearance with ryder, watson and two other youngsters in the middle forgot who they were, monfries and? anyway i just think he needs to run hard into the forward line to give us another key marking option, when he does this then he will be on his journey to stardom.

I did notice that when hille was in the ruck though we seemed to have the ascendancy more around the ground, it will be great when ryder can play forward and ruck in that front half, with hille in the ruck controlling the back half and have laycock coming off the bench with a rotational system.
