RTB said he was going back to an"effort based defensive" game plan and he wasn't going to focus on skill level as happened in 2016. Now from 2012-2015 he always played a +1 in the backline and it was Johnno who was at his peak with his decision making, speed and skill level. Johnno set up a lot of our sorties going forward with excellent kicking and also running the ball forward.

It has been well discussed on a few threads that Johnno's performance on Sunday was very much below what was expected but then again he is much older has lost speed and his elite kicking was not so elite.

If RTB is not going to place an emphasis on skill development then he needs to select players who are naturally gifted in this area. he keeps persisting with serial turnover offenders in Sutcliffe, Spurr and Dawson(speciality in handballing to flatfooted teammates).

we have been told that it's a 4 yr rebuild then we need games into Collins, A.Pearce(when fit), Hughes & Balic. Dawson & spur are stopping the development of others.

Agree with Hasleby(in Today's The WEST) that RTB needs more skillful players in the back six. Crozier or Hughes is a better prospect than Sutcliffe. Moreover, Ibbo played a cracker as the +1 intercept marking
player in RD23 V Wbulldogs 2016. Why wasn't he playing this role V Cats??

Also the ball should be given to Weller he's quick, a line breaker and he can deliver it with skill

My back 6 also playing Ibbo as a +1

Hughes Collins Hamling
Ibbo (+1)
Weller Johnno Crozier

Johnno gets another chance if he keeps butchering the ball then its Peel time he won't be around by 2019/20 when we are supposedly challenging again.

Also Balic to make debut in place of Suban and Sherridan(needs to show something or its Peel) in place of Tucker.

Think we need Spurr in there at the moment, at least until Hamling finds his feet in the system and can do a decent job on the small / medium forwards.

Hughes Dawson Spurr
Ibbotson (+1)
Weller Hamling Crozier
That's is what I am talking about . Either ibbo or hamling move upfield when freo attack. Or ibbo cover Weller or croz when they run the ball out using their speed. Let spurr play until Hughes is ready.

Yeah too much Vanilla back there.

Dawson or Hamling pick one of.

Ibbo or Sutcliffe pick one of. You'd almost throw Spurr in that basket although he is probably just good enough to be an automatic pick.

The rest need to be able to kick and rebound well.

Johnno is cooked too. Yeah you can maybe get another year and a bit out of him once he gets back up to speed but that's **** all use to us in 2019.

Logue needs games for experience. Ryan, Crozier (last chance) and Hughes need games to see if they can actually step up consistently in that role or not.

If we're talking long term (no injuries):

Spurr - Collins - Hamling
Crozier - A. Pearce - Ibbo - Ryan

That looks likely but it still makes me a bit nervous.

Collins is a good kid but can we rely on his foot skills? Hamling ditto. Alex Pearce isn't great by foot but at least has a serious amount of dash.

Can we play all 3 talls especially with Spurr/Ibbo who seem best in that intercept marking role?

I'm going to give a really boring answer and say 'it depends.' The way the coach wants to play should dictate the kind of players we have on our list. At the moment I think we have to, especially when you look at forward lines such as Adelaide's who have Tex, Jenkins, Lynch plus a resting ruck.

Luke was the backline general, whenever he was out, michaels game always dropped off. The two together were massively underrated as a defensive unit. Some are born to lead and control, others follow, i would say johnson is in the latter.

From 2012-15 Duffield was also important in that role, probably more so than Jonno.

We had a naturally skilled player in the backline on Sunday but even he turned it over on a number of occasions. Even skilled players need to practice their skills.

Ibbo was the plus one quite a lot on Sunday that I saw.

Re your side, I don't mind it but Spurr in front of Hughes as he plays on the opposition small

Dawson or Hamling? Hamling for sure as he is a reliable kick.

Ibbo or Sutcliffe? Ibbo for now. Sutcliffe would be his replacement.

Johnsons body is stuffed. Because of that I see Dawson playing on for another season. Hughes should eventually come in too

I think we have the slowest back 6 in the whole afl, it was embarrassing watching harry Taylor who turns like a truck give Johnson the shake 4 or 5 times, might as well have been playing on skates

Thankfully you're not the real Bond, things are hard enough.
I prefer my reamings short term and to reduce in pain with time. Playing people with no future and/or no improvement left will only guarantee long term pain. Some people are into pain I guess :thumbsu:.

I don't want to have a knee-jerk reaction and give up on any players just from the one game - I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I just think from our back 6 last year to last week's game, the lineup's completely different - so I'm hoping it's just teething problems. They'll look a lot better once we get Pearce back too

I want to see this by mid year when AP is fit:
Collins Pearce Grey
Crozier Hamling Spurr

Grey to just lock down on, and preferably maim, the best opposition small and kick as little as possible
Crozier to be Duffield Mk II but a better mark
The rest are pretty obvious

Our back 6 by the end of the year will look different. I expect A.Pearce, Ryan and a small amount of optimism thinks potentially one of Logue/Hughes/Nyhuis could also be featured. My dream back 6 with some chemistry by the end of the year would be

Spurr A.Pearce Ryan
Ibbo roaming
Croz/Sut/TShez Hamling Johnno

With Tucker/Weller roaming through and Dawson/Collins as the ready made replacements. If Johnno comes back to his 2013 form we're already a much better side. Sutcliffe/Croz and Sheridan will probably all be fighting for that 1 spot, personally I hope Crozier makes it his.

Starting 2018;

Grey A Pearce Hamling

Ibbotson

Ryan Logue Weller

The key introductions are Ryan, Logue and Grey

Good place for Logue to do his apprenticeship, he gets to use his size, leap, run and kick. The ball comes to him. I see him a little like Croad. Would be quite happy for Cox to develop here too if Logue fits elsewhere.

Ryan projects as a skilled player rather than a defensive king, and with Weller becomes central to transition. Crozier could also play this role or perhaps Tucker. We have a surfeit of players suitable for this role.

Grey is in to close down opponents and to be an enforcer for us. He succeeds Spurr, with the alternative being Hughes or perhaps someone like Duman (based on nothing much but have high hopes for him)

I think we still need an interceptor, and Ibbotson is ok in that regard.

We're all holding onto the idea that MJ can recapture his form, a bit like when Pav went on. I think from preseason and early season games he's shown he's lost a yard of pace and his skills aren't up to scratch.

Are we?

His main role now is to be effective and to mentor an inexperienced backline. Quite happy if he only plays home games.
