I know that the big push is for a more attacking game plan and I support that. But I also think we need a hard line tagger. It is not simply the ability to reduce a players impact. A great tagger forces change to the opposition's game plan.

From within our squad I wonder if Mayne could be thrown the challenge. It would require him to take his endurance to an elite level. His marking, speed and size are perfect for the role.

I also wonder if Sutcliffe could be considered with Grey possibly coming into the backline.

Both these players offer the potential to be attacking taggers, dangerous offensively if the opportunity arises.

Thoughts?

I think I'd use Grey as a tagger over Sutty. Sutty just lacks body strength and would be pushed out of the way too easily, especially at the stoppages.

Grey will be a beast next year. I'd expect him to push MDB out of the 22.

I think Maynes days as predominately forward are over, forwards need to kick goals under pressure. The backline is where I think he could
play, and is needed.
With the injury to Johnson this year, Duffields decline, Elvis retiring? The lack of skills, run and carry, quick ball movement down back was
non existent.
At least Mayne tries to get the quick handball, playing on quickly, style that is required in modern footy.

If everyone is healthy, I think Mayne might be player number 23-25

West Coast don't have a hard line tagger. Nor do Hawthorn. Maybe a tagger would help us, maybe it wouldn't, but we definitely don't need to go down that path. We played our best footy early in the year without a tagger.

I think if we had a top shelf tagger on Mitchell instead of another generic defensive minded midfielder rotating around, we improve our chance of defeating Hawthorn.

We've beaten Hawthorn once in the past four years. Most of those losses came with a top shelf tagger.

Most of them were in Launceston too.
And those games have all been pantsings.

The game on Friday was Freo's second smallest losing margin against the Hawks, the smallest being the 2013 GF. The one time we did beat Hawthorn in the past four years, Crowley tagged Smith, and we scored over 100 points.

Taggers don't defeat Hawks nor should Mitchell be the one tagged.

The game plan is inherently flawed against game plans like the Hawks, look at our losses against Richmond and Eagles for further proof.

OP title should be changed to back to the dark ages.

Let's move on, we've drafted midfield talent lets develop that talent to win the ball and beat an opponent. I can't believe that most of us acknowledge that our gameplan is too defensive and yet this suggestion gets made.

I'm not sure about that.

I don't want a Crowley or Ben Jacobs...but if we could develop a Ling style run with and hurt you the other way it would be beneficial

We probably should have played a tagger in the prelim, but I agree with Ross on this, the trick is to bring someone in who is as good as him, for the future. Now we just have to work out who that is.

I imagine this was partially the intention for Suban. But he was just so bad at it.

Yep, Kennedy killed him in the QF.

Still, I would have preferred Suban to have started on Mitchell with someone else the ub. Maybe Deboer?

Also hawks player like to move to different position they don't actually got real midfield player Hodge play half forward , mid , loose man.The only thing against the them like cat their list is ageing.they can be close down faster by young player. We currently got one player in grey that can play mutilple role but hope he improve his disposal of the ball during pre season.
