Bad team names.

Thank God we haven't done the NRL thing of ripping off American NFL names. All three Qld teams have done it, with two of them having quintessential American ones, ie Broncos and Cowboys. It's bad enough that it is an English game without adding the American names. The older names are better because they aren't 'forced', but obviously that aint gonna happen for a new club. As long as there is some seperation from Southport I'd be happy to see the GC be the Sharks.

One of the more unusual in recent times has been the Central Cheetahs in Super 14.

While the Cheetah is a majestic animal and a suitable emblem, it sounds exactly the same as Cheater.

As for the Gold Coast and West Sydney teams, I would call them the Sharks and the Falcons respectively, with the Gold Coast wearing an orange and navy blue gurnsey, and West Sydney wearing the colours of the defunct University Team - black & blue.

Another vote for the West Coast Eagles which gives no indication of where the team is from.

They could represent the West Coast of Tasmania for all you know.

Haha, yeah right. Only a moron couldn't tell the West Coast Eagles are located on the West Coast of Australia. Western Bulldogs on the other hand are a different story. They could be Western anywhere.

Also I think the Fremantle Dockers is a great name. They just got the rest of it wrong.

Essendons nickname "The Bombers" came about during WW2. It was due to their proximity to the Essendon Aerodrome, where many of our and US wartime aircraft, re: Bombers were based.

Prior to that they were mainly known as The Same Olds. Other not so good nicnames were The Essendonians, and The Sash Wearers.

Hope :thumbsu: that clears that up.

What about the Injunctions?

Can you imagine cheering them on: "Go team whose name we dare not speak"?

"Well done player whose identity was stolen by scum from c7, but whom it is now illegal to mention in polite company"

In regards American college team names from many posts before --
University of Califormia at Santa Cruz: Banana Slugs

The dockers is also a very poor name. haha, although, those wharfies and surfers and what not down by the water in WA are fairly scary.

HAHAHAHA yeah those girls in bikini's sure are pretty scary aren't they??? well maybe for a sausage smoker like youself but for the rest of us we don't hang round with the warfies in overalls looking for a chance to get a bit of rough love.

I don't know why people have a problem with the Swan as a mascot. They are huge, majestic birds that can easily break your arm. I'd much rather dodge a cranky Swan than a Magpie, Crow or a Cat. They also have as much cultural and indigenous relevence to Australia as the Australian Magpie and Australian small Raven.

Greatest.Uniform.Ever.

It looks like an Atari 2600 game , LOL:D. What the hell kind of "nugget" are they talking about anyway?. Nuggets aren't special or tough, I drop a few every mourning in the bowl, why name your sports team after that?

Merv - u state:
"Team names should be related to the history, the geography, the colors...."

Do a bit of research and u will understand why Power was selected as the new nickname for Port Adelaide.

Interesting to note most people have no issue with their own team - a bit of a holier than thou toppic.

There are so many bad team names in Australia, largely due to US influences.
With the inevitability of 2 new AFL teams I hope like hell they dont have crap names attached.

Here are some examples of bad sport names. Thankfully there is only one AFL club that has a bad name and that is the one I'll start with.

Port Power.
Queensland Roar.
Perth Glory.
Gold Coast Galaxy - Mooted.
Sth East Melb Magic.

Team names should be related to the history, the geography, the colors, or an animal (other than a razorback!!!)

Comment.
There is no team in the AFL caled Port Power(memo Robert Walls)
It is the Port Adelaide Football Club with team nickname Power or the Power.Such as the Carlton FC with nick name the Blues. Not Carlton Blues.
The logo was changed from PortPower to just power in and around 2000-2001 and the team song changed from Port Power to just Power to try and alleviate the confusion but it appears it hasn't worked.

I am well aware that it is not called the Port Power Football Club. I just find that 'Power' is mascotless, and sounds like some of the crappy Roars and Glory's etc.
Having power also makes for crappy guernseys with lightning all over them. (yes i know my team has had some crappy guernseys as well)
FWIW I think it stinks that you are unable to wear your traditional guernsey and that you cannot at least be the SA magpies.

I am also genuinely interested to hear the history behind Power as 'Power to all' suggests there is.
Looking on the bright side at least you are not called the "Teal Sox" ;)
