It's not unexpected! Yesterday was a bad as it can possibly ever get. The worst loss in AFL history sums it up. The decisions in the short & long term will be interesting.
The fact that Malthouse & Roos are saying they won't coach next yr makes it even more interesting. If they are true to their word, there really isnt a long list previous or current coaches that stand out. Perhaps we will look at Eade but it is more likely than not that we will end up with another untried/rookie coach.
I think we are a far more attractive proposition then Adelaide but perhaps I'm looking at our list through rose coloured glasses. Whoever gets the job will inherit a young list that is meant to be the envy of many, but they will also inherit a very mentally weak & fragile playing group too!

Glad he is gone but yesterday's performance shouldnt happen to any coach. The playing group is an absolute disgrace, this sacking on makes me angrier at them.

Brad Green you ****ing incompetent squibb do the honourable thing and step down as well, youre the biggest disgrace in this whole debacle.

Its time for the kids to take over, Jordie, Jack T and Frawley as people have already mentioned. Our 'leaders' are clearly failures, the lot of them, we need the younger guns to create a new culture at this club, it isnt going to come from our guys who are 25+.

I pray we appoint Todd. Dont want to see Royal given the opportunity, he shouldnt be at our club next year. Ditto West.

dont know exactly what to feel right now
i have been screaming for him to be sacked since the west coast game, and yet i really dont feel like dancing for joy right now....

this whole exercise will have been a waste of time if certain senior players dont feel some heat as well, even though i dont think tactically he was up to standard.. he wasnt on the field on saturday ... he didnt throw in the towel and disgrace every person associated with club..

i didnt mind dean bailey as a person, but his tactics were from an era gone by and his assistants arent up to scratch.. bring on the new era:thumbsu:

This is what interests me the most. Bailey was always gone but who takes over for the final 5 games is anybodies guess. Surely they turn to Viney.... maybe Scott West?

Todd Viney being a former club champion is easier to sell. Similar to what Port did last year promoting Primus after they turfed Williams.

So happy to see the back of Bailey! If I was running things I would have sacked him years ago!

James Hird said he wasn't going to coach this year.

Mark Thompson said he was going to stay at Geelong.

Talk is cheap.

The fact that he is a nice bloke with kids and a family means nothing. Melbourne accepted mediocrity for too long with Danniher, we couldn't afford to do it with Bailey. And let's be honest, Saturday was far below just mediocrity.

Surely Neale Daniher's rein set Melbourne back 5-10yrs with his recruiting/trading.

Bailey was untried and a huge gamble.

Some of Bailey's team selections smelt of a coach who had personnal vendettas against certain players.

Watts will thrive now that Baileys gone mark my words.

Yes, we struggled to recruit a decent player with Daniher.

However, Watts has been one of our shining lights this season and, his last three weeks excepted, he has been one of our most consistent performers over the last 3 months of football.

Dont care who is appointed coach for the next 5 games, its irrelevant.

What is relevant is that a statement must be made with the players. Green/Rivers should be demoted from the leadership group as well as playing in the magoo's next week along with Jurrah and anyone else that didn't have any balls on the weekend.

Frawley and Trengove and a couple of the younger blokes should be installed into the leadership group.

Was Garry Lyon part of the panel that appointed Bailey? because he has been very very scathing not sure just asking.

IMO next year you need a younger more uncompromising coach, i dont think it is the game plan or the talent that is letting you guys down i think it is the discipline and mental toughness.

IMO the best thing your club can do is pick your guy, and let him surround himself with like minded people, Melbourne dont need a coach that willl tinker with this and tinker with that, they need a coach and assistants that demand uncompromising and hard football where if players do not toe the line they are out.

That sets a standard, creates a culture and puts everyone on notice, this may not create instant success but it sets apart the ones who want it and the ones who don't, and eventually reaps rewards.

On a personal note would love to see you guys take a chance on Scotty Burns who is a damm smart operator and would not tolerate half hearted players and effort.

Hopefully Watts will never be seen in defence again unless in a permanent role.

It will be very exciting to see the changes on Sunday. I wonder if there are some players that Viney always loved and some who he always hated.

Just seems a little odd though don't you think. The timing? The performance? The Scully fiasco? I think this had to happen now for mfc to get a leg up with another coach.

Yes he was but that doesn't mean he can't be critical. Bailey seemed like a good choice at the time and hindsight is 20/20.

Good choice at the time?!?! Really!?!?!

I remember reading an article in the paper saying Bailey was appointed coach and my first reaction was "Who the **** is Dean Bailey?"

i agree that the next coach has to be uncomprimising, no more developmental she'll be right bullshit.. harden the **** up now tackle run take pride in your performance and do what your asked to do or **** off... the rest will follow suit

Most of this is pretty spot on. This is a very interesting year for the MFC. Will only get more interesting as the weeks go by.

Who will be traded?
Will green stay capt?
Who will be coach?
What will Scully do?
Will anyone jump ship?
What of out record membership #'s next year?
What of our CEO?
What does Connolly do?
Where can we expect to finish next year?
Can't wait

But your knowledge of people in football, with all due respect, would largely be based on their playing career. He was a successful coach at Port Adelaide and obviously was very impressive in the interviews.

Then Garry must take some blame IF and its a big IF he had not had some sort of consultation with Dean from time to time.

Lyon to me seems half in half out in what sort of power does he have at the club and how much does he contribute to actually help out?

Those two need to balance out for mine.

Not having a dig at all but i don't know and wondering if Dees fans have the same sort of questions.

Do you reckon the MFC will be going after Rocket Eade hard? The question has to be asked....is your list comparable to the doggies list that Rocket inherited when he took on the dogs reign? And if he does...will he keep Scotty West as an assistant? Talk about a domino effect, 2 coaching vacancies for 2012 - Eade, Clarkson and Ratten all unsigned.

There's no point in going after Roos or Malthouse, both said they won't be available next year.

Eade is a great coach to get a club up and running and playing finals, Rhode left the dogs a complete rabble when Eade took over.

Seems being young and inexperienced is no longer a excuse a coach can use nor are 5 year plans, tough gig coaching a AFL club, maybe this will lead to clubs not just going the youth path and picking up more mature aged players.

He was a successful coach at Port Adelaide and obviously was very impressive in the interviews.

He was a small cog on a team that over achieved.

His record since taking the helm at Melbourne shows he is not a successful coach. I wonder what percentage of his wins have been against interstate teams at the MCG? When was the last time we beat a team higher on the ladder?

i think we all wish gary would put his money where his mouth is but he is way too cozy doing what he is doing, he holds massive power at the club but isnt officially involved.. dont know if it actually causes problems though
