BALL MOVEMENT ANALYSIS | Video

I see a lot of comments suggesting we have zero ball movement or method.

I made this video to show not only that we do, but when executed can cut up even the best sides.

Ok, but the question remains.

Is the "end-game" of all this enough to excuse 5 wins in 2 years? And are we confident the club can play this style, with this list, & win 10 games in a season within the next 3 seasons?

Think the club is 7 seasons away from being a top 4 team atm. The rebuild is 3 years too late & Adem was given possibly the worst list situation for a new coach to inherit, ever.

Adam has a lot of excuses for sure. Still doesn't mean he has the "it" factor & despite my genuinely liking him as a human, I have to be honest in saying I dont think he has "it"

If we are being completely rational you simply can’t count last year for anything. Given the extensive circumstances.

We are effectively 16 games into his reign with the list he is wanting to build.

And even if we absolutely have to include last year, we are ahead of last year in most metrics with 1,600 games less experience.

The bare bones of what we want to do are there, players just don’t know when / where to be at certain times.

This comes with experience.

We will want to see some progression on it all next year for sure, reduced margins, more wins etc.

But when they execute what we are wanting them to do, it’s clean and slick.

Just need it to happen more often!

Maybe we see it more against lower ranked teams?

I think Yze and co are still stuck with a dimma system that has well and truley died or morphed into what it is now with GC.

I reckon he needs to bring in some free agents money ball style ala Houli Grigg style. I reckon offering Pendels a contract and a guarantee coaching role after his playing time.

The highlighted passages are good but they are probably the only passages in the whole game. That’s really the problem.

I'm also curious what our instructions are to players when in pressure situations.

1) Ball in hand from a tap at a centre re-start, about to be or are in the process of being tackled. Where does the possession go?

2) Ball in hand deep in defense after a spoil from an incoming long kick, about to be or are in the process of being tackled. Where does the possession go?

3) Ball in hand pressed up against the boundary between the 50m arcs, about to be or are in the process of being tackled. Where does the possession go?

Three very different situations, each with different implications for turnovers. Do we match-sim these incidents enough during the week? Is the same message being programmed into our players so that teammates are conditioned to know where the next kick/handpass will go?

Seriously, there are times when putting the ball 25 rows back out-on-the-full is far preferable to keeping the kick in the field of play but to an unmanned oppo. Is the pride of not conceding such a free kick outweighing the pragmatism of not allowing a fast rebound?

There are times where just wearing the tackle, holding the ball in, and taking the inevitable 'holding the ball' penalty is far preferable to allowing it to spill out into a nest of oppo who can quickly rebound. Is the pride of not conceding such a free kick outweighing the pragmatism of not coughing up a loose ball in a vulnerable part of the ground?

I wonder if we have team rules on all these and many other pressure situations? Are they being drilled in so we are all on the same page? Because if we do have such instructions, they are certainly not yet being implemented or obeyed on nearly enough occasions.

The architect of our ball movement during our premiership reign in Blake Caracella is part of our coaching group. Surely he knows what is required for team success.

However, it's one thing knowing what to do, it's another having the players to do it.

Fast ball movement requires an ability to maintain that tempo for 4 quarters and also the ability to defend turnover. One can't expect a team of young players with less than 20 - 30 games and only a couple of preseasons under their belts to enable this.

Patience is what we need. Right now, results don't really matter. Game time and synergy within the playing group is what's required and that takes time.

I know it's painful to watch, but don't lose sight of the bigger picture.

Yeah, I don't need to know what the team rules on our ball movement are, becasue if I know then the oppo certainly does too.

I just need to know if they actually exist, and that these rules are effectively being drilled into our younger players.

Because I can tell they're not sticking with our mid-tier-age blokes.

we don’t have the skills to execute ball movement. then we kick down the line as the go to option. our boys are not ready to mark and it comes back. bottom line when we have turnover kings like hopper and tarantula we are not going anywhere. it’s plain as day our problem is the quality of our mids. it’s sub standard.

it's the problem, but it should also be expected when playing against top 4 sides that are extremely well oiled and drilled, 5-7 years ahead of us.

they simply don't allow teams to take that option as much as they would like to.

thats on us to get better and making quicker and better decisions which will increase as they develop and grow.

what I did like those is those passages were early in the game too when the contest was still on. so wasn't like the cats had switched off in the last and we could move it then.

small steps, but once we get better at doing it more often, it will be good to watch.

this week I have taken a closer look at some of our forward 50 entries and the poor decision making that is happening and where we should be looking instead.

Video Analysis below of a few examples that could have resulted in uncontested marks inside forward 50.

This week I have taken a closer look at 3 counter attacks that we failed with in the last quarter vs St Kilda which could have got us back in front.

a huge part of our game we need to improve, the decision making in the final part of the ground.

that tarranto kick at the end was some of the worst decision making i've ever seen. he picked the worst possible option there. this is why im keen on drafting players like lindsay, players with vision and skill. we have too many boofheads that just want to relay the pressure rather than find the best option.

Need to point out that the last month we have been no 1 from deep 50 to forward line transition. The issue is have seen it forward line brains. None of our players J turn to lead up for an easy mark on a fast transition. I can count at least 5 times in last few games we do not split the defense up more by having 1 player j turn towards the ball kicker for an easy 30 to 40 metre kick from goal. Taranto's kick was terrible but who he was kicking to made it even harder. 3 backline players collapsing on a player running to the goal square. We are not offering up an alternative to the out the back plays. Good teams do that.
