The only advantage from an Australian point of view is that we can have all the contenders play a few Shield games to justify Test selections.
There is only one round of Sheffield Shield before the first Test of the summer (which they would have played anyway even if the tour had gone ahead).

From memory there is only one Shield game before the opening home Test, which the players would have been available for after the Bangladesh series. Apart from those that CA decided to "rest", of course.

Nah, a 2 test series over Boxing Day and New Year's.

Can't be worse than what the Windies might be.

We played an ODI in London through the terror attacks there in 2005 which were of a horrendous magnitude. Suspect if we were on the sub-continent we would have packed our bags and gone home.

However in this instance it's the government who have essentially made the call for CA. After reading first hand accounts from the Sri Lankan and Umpire buses traveling to the test in Pakistan back in March 2009, I really can't blame any cricketer of not wanting to be anywhere near that kind of environment.

My understanding is that there was a specific threat against the Australia team.

so pakistan, india & south africa have all toured bangladesh since the world cup this year to play a test series - yet we can't.

i know the players safety is paramount, but seriously ?

zimbabwe are also touring bangladesh next month.

Have you checked the DFAT website re: Bangladesh lately - it's no joke

Bangladesh has been chosen to host the 2016 Asia Cup. Must be really unsafe...

Australia must really hate Bangladesh. We 'postponed' their Test tour to Australia in 2008 (only ODIs were played) and again in 2010. Australia also somehow got out of playing the scheduled 2 Tests in Bangladesh in 2011. They never get rescheduled. And no doubt CA will find a way to stop Bangladesh's scheduled tour of Australia in 2017.

Going off the DFAT advice, we shouldn't tour India or South Africa.

Abandoning the tour was absolutely the right thing to do. When UK and US intelligence are also saying the threat was specific to Australia, that's pretty compelling evidence.

The DFAT site is enough to scare off anyone thinking about setting foot in half the Test playing nations. South Africa seems very dangerous, the Asian countries generally unsafe and unstable, and surprisingly Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago probably top the cricketing list when it comes to serious and violent crimes against tourists/foreigners.
