Still not convinced. Showed again today how soft he is. Continually pulls out of contests and is pushed off the ball.

Should be dropped next week. He doesn't deserve to play in the final game of hard nuts like Magic, Leo and Crouch.

Whilst everyone else is playing, give him a boxing session with Bazza and teach him how to harden up.

hes bitten off more than he can Chew
hes been given consecutive games which i think by now he should have at least stepped up a little his other team mates like Smith and O'Dwyer have proven they have got what it takes to improve

Sadly i think Ed will be moved on next year either through delistment or trade

But in his defence his role has been chopped and changed around a few times

if they do give him a chance idd like to see him play a CHF role as when he's settled he knows how 2 kick a goal or two
 
Having seen little of our past three games, I can only go on other opinions, but if it is indeed the case Barlow continues to be soft, maybe he's the bloke we can use in a trade. He's certainly got skills and a great boot, and could probably be of use as an outside running type to someone.

We certainly can't afford him to continue being soft and physically weak in contests.

You just can't play for the Swans and be soft. We shouldn't accept it. It goes against everything we are.

Commetti summed it up today in his call. Can't remember exactly what happened but I think it involved Bolton. Someone remarked how courageous it was. Commetti replied "I think when you're a senior player for the Swans, courage is automatically ticked off. It's a given."

Barlow has no courage. How you can take the field with Brett Kirk and still refuse to put your body on the line, I'll never know.

I've been defending him over the last couple of weeks when others have criticised, but to be honest, in my eyes this was his worst game of the lot. The last two weeks, while his impact hasn't been great, he looked as though he was at least trying to have an impact. Today, he was near the ball as much as any other player, but refused to attack it. He was bumped off the ball ridiculously easily on a few occasions (nothing to do with strength, when he uses his body he's quite powerful, he just doesn't seem to bother resisting), his tackles weren't sticking (again, they have in the past, but today his efforts were embarrassing), he was dropping marks, not because they were difficult, or even unlucky, but because he got his hands into position late, or in one bizarre case, took the ball in front of him, but with his arms folded to his chest so Maxwell, who was trailing behind him, was still able to get a fist to it, cause a turnover and (I think) create a goal.

Get into the gym, work on your core strength and upper body, hire ROK as a personal trainer, and do ten rounds in the ring with Bazza to HTFU. Go back to the ressies, attack the ball every time you see it, be ****ing selfish, try the impossible (because you're talented enough to do it), and when an opposition player has the ball, LAUNCH YOURSELF AT HIM. GET ANGRY, EDDIE! START A ****ING FIGHT!
 
He is not soft, he just lacks mongrel which is a different thing. He is an athlete not a footballer and this shows. Some athletes make it some don't. Around the contest he lacks the natural footballers instinct which shows in his decision making or lack of. If he can find some mongrel this may help, but I feel he is a hugger not a hitter.
 
Like I said in another thread, Barlow was one of my two men for the season for me to back to the hilt, but I really struggle to after the showings he's had. When people called for his head at the start I said that he needed to have 5 or 6 consecutive games, and he's had far more than that (dunno the exact number). I reckon he could be the steak knives in a trade - Buchanan + Barlow, or Ablett + Barlow becomes a decent trade and no trade pick sacrificed.
 
I've got a feeling that we might trade him, only to have him blossom at his new club. As everyone recognises, he's got a lot of talent, but we just haven't been able to get it out of him. Another coach might have more luck.

Rubbish.He looks like Western Star that has been left out in the sun for a day.Not every league footballer has mongrel as you call it but the majority do have the key ingredient,and that is competitive spirit.The defence of being an athlete and not a footballer doesent wash.Regardless if you are are anathlete recruited from Jamacia or a Kid that was born playing kick to kick in the backstreets of Melbourne when you walk through the doors of the SMSSFC that competitive spirit comes in spades and if Barlow cant find it pretty quickly he might as well get Sebastian Coe on side and start training for the 1500 at the next Olympics.

100% correct.

Also doesn't help when we run all our set plays though him and Collingwood pick up on that and put Nick Maxwell on him. He had no hope today of proving anything.

Of course he'll get another season at the club, but next year his has to prove to the club that he can be a footballer, which he bearly can do on a regular basis.

Banana's. Competitive spirit and mongrel are a different thing again. Pyke for one is competitive but shows no mongrel. That chap should be hurting people around the contest, Like Buddy on Cousins. Barlow is competitive it's just when he arrives at the contest it's not always obvious to him what play is next even more so if another teamate is already involved. That is were his game falls down.

Agree about Pyke, I want to see him spear tackle blokes!
 
I didn't see the game today (because I had to work), but he hasn't really impressed me in any of the games I have seen. For me it was his decision-making that let him down more than his softness, but it seems that he is shirking the contests now. It might be a case of him not wanting to take possession because he isn't confident in the decision he'll have to make.

Unlike Luke Ablett, who doesn't let his poor decision making stop him from getting the ball and screwing it all up.

yeah...i don't think he wanted the ball...a couple of times he gained posession he looked for the quick handball...he was up and around the contests but he was just sitting back watching...he had a couple effective kicks...but apart from that he didn't do anything...he's just on the field...he doesn't apply pressure and he doesn't attack

He had a mark today, had it on the chest, but he looked upo as it landed to see two pies, neither of whom were going to stop him marking it, but he spilled it.

I dont think he won a one on one contest all day, very frustrating to watch at the ground.
 
I admire the fact that Cheese has achieved the dream of playing AFL football...I rue the fact that he chops most possessions he gets and ultimately ***** our chances of winning games at crucial stages! Sorry Roosy...he's not the next Goodes!
 
He's impressed in some matches, but today was clearly a disaster. It was so bad that my heart broke for him.

Certainly not the next Goodes.
 
Yeah, he had a nick name of white goods but I don't think it will stick as he won't be around long enough. He seems to run besdie the ball .... doesnt go and get it !!

I heard Commetti say that when I watched the replay (I too had to work yesterday) but I think he may have been referring to Moore when he backed back into the pack to get the ball to Bevan.
I did listen to MMM for most of the game and they were giving poor old Barlow a real bagging.
 
Any other club would laugh him out the door... then promptly close it.

NO chance to trade him as no club would be stupid enough.

Come on Swans let's get fair dinkum and give cheese the heave ho. :thumbsd:
