Great to see my favourite live performer and singer Jimmy Barnes get into the hall of fame. great performance started of brilliantly even though he sings the song out a little bit more conservatively these days.

His speech was a little all over the place- but loved the way he finished it!
too true. especially the amount of gigs he could count on his hand when he was sober. great to see his family there, his support and reason he is still going. his performance was great, but my favourite version of working class man was the unplugged one, its a beauty especially the closing of the song

Cant see why he'd make the Hall Of Fame as a solo act, off the back of basically one song (Working Class Man) and an album of boring old soul cover versions.

Cold Chisel were already in the HOF - Barnsey hasnt done enough to deserve a second spot in the HOF. Cold Chisel represent 90% of his musical achievements.

Unfortunately, due to the state of Australian music, it came down to him or Guy Sebastian...

He's had around 7 or 8 #1 albums.
There wouldn't be many Aussies acts that have done that.
Surely you jest!!!

(ps half those 8 albums were mere cabaret/elevator music, Soul Deep, Soul Deeper, Soul Deepest and Soul Deep Mountain High. They were purchased as drink coasters.)

no, that was 2 of them. soul deep was actually quality. soul deeper was more of a motown rehash.

bodyswerve, for the working class man, two fires, freight train heart.. alot of gold in there.

heat, flesh and wood... average.
psyclone, love and fear... poor by his previous standards.

Some great music. I am a fan of the "Two Fires" album even though it has a more pop late 80's dated production, the songs underneath are great and hold alot of memories for me. Freight Train Heart I consider the best of his studio albums and East for Chisel days. Theres some great stuff over his career. Has anyone got his hits DVD with all the videos on it? Its pretty good

I'm guessing hotpie is an Australian Idol fan.
They've probably got all the records that Afroman,Bogan Noll, the fat chick, the greasy little midget and all the other rejects have done.

Plus they've probably rushed out and got Mark Holdens albums [has he got more than 1 ?]

I saw Holden's best of the other week, they were practically giving one away with every purchase, it was like $5 or something.

Big Chisel fan, just dont see much he's done solo that is noteworthy. Certainly nothing original. He's turned in a cabaret singer.

What made Barnsey great were the magnificent songwriters - Walker, Moss, Prestwich - of Cold Chisel. Even Barnsey himself was a better songwriter in his Chisel days than he was during his solo career.

Without them hes just another bogan screaming at the top of his lungs.

How can you claim to be a big Chisel fan but yet claim that Jimmy has done nothing "noteworthy" as a solo singer?

I just told you - I'm a big Chisel fan because of the songwriting of Walker and Prestwich. The songs allowed Barnes to actually sing , and not scream every note. And Mossy was a great singer himself, allowing wonderful harmonies and variety in their vocal sound.

All the things I loved about Cold Chisel are absent from most of Jimmy Barnes solo work.

It's fine to say that but it doesn't take away from the fast that Jimmy had/s a huge solo career as well.

He is argueably more successful commercially than Chisel were though.
I would say definitly more successful, any one who has questioned Barnseys qualifications for the hall of fame have a look at these quotes.

After his tenure as part of the successful Cold Chisel, Jimmy Barnes' solo career outstripped Chisel's record sales and enshrined him as one of the biggest selling Australian recording acts of all time.
http://www.howlspace.com.au/en2/barnesjimmy/barnesjimmy.htm

December 1983 and Barnes launched an immediate solo career, eclipsing Cold Chisel's record sales with six solo number one albums in a row.

Care to name anyone who deserved it before Jimmy hotpie??

Jimi was a deserved rock hero in yhe early days of Chisel.
Up to Breakfast at sweathearts and East, it was all good.

Jimmy wrote "no sense" on one of the last albums and he hit the nail on the head.

The boys from Journey basically wrote him all the american heartbeat solo stuff (Niel Schon} in a Gudinski plot to get Barnesy a number one in the States.

The Yanks are still rollin over laffing at his screeching parakeet melodical movements IN THE STUDIO,
They thought his soul recordings were better played on retirement cruises as opposed to launching steaming vical turds directly at the audience.

And their right.

If i was gonna do a soul album I would hire the Funk Brothers for the sessions, not some hak bass player and drummer who had been Jimmis little s h i t m e n for the past 14 years.

Most commercial record I think is "Two Fires" in the rock ballad reigning era of the late 80's (Aerosmith, Guns and Roses, U2, Bon Jovi, etc...) it had a more pop 80's feel to it and sounds of its time, but I enjoy the record. Freight Train Heart is my fave solo record and I did like his covers soul deep(er) all he needs is to get his voice going and I'm listening. Not a great musician by any means or songwriter, something yes that defined Chisel, but a great entertainer and singer.
