Long-serving Hawthorn Football Club chief physiotherapist Barry Gavin has stepped down from his role because of poor health.

Gavin, 57, is on a waiting list for a liver transplant after being diagnosed with PSC, a condition where there is a breakdown of the body’s immune system that leads to a destruction of the bile ducts in and around the liver.

The bile system is a vital part of the digestive system, and also plays a minor role in the elimination of the body’s toxins.

Gavin has been under the Austin Hospital’s liver transplant unit since February this year, and is hopeful of receiving a suitable donor liver in the near future.

Unfortunately, because of his deteriorating health, Gavin will stand down from the club’s role as physiotherapist, as well as relinquish his responsibilities at his physio clinics in Heidelberg, Hawthorn and Reservoir.

“I’m on the waiting list for a liver transplant and have stood down,” said Gavin, the father of three children.

“I have been seriously ill for the past 18 months and have come to a point where I have been forced to curtail all duties at Hawthorn Football Club and my clinical work.

“Once my health picks up I am looking forward to returning to a role at the HFC in the medical team.”

Barry Gavin has been associated with the Hawthorn Football Club for 30 years.
He joined the club as assistant physio in 1972 under Harry Miller who had worked at Glenferrie for more than 50 years. Gavin was appointed chief physio in 1975 and has played an integral part in the performance and rehabilitation of players during that time.

He was also awarded club life membership in 1990 for his outstanding contributions – on as well as off the field.

His assistant Chris Ward will take charge for the 2003 season. Ward, a business partner with Gavin has been Hawthorn’s deputy physio for the past eight seasons.

Hawthorn FC Chief Executive Michael Brown today applauded Gavin’s achievements and contributions to the club.

“Barry is a remarkable man and outstanding worker,” Brown said.
“He has always been the benchmark of professionalism at this club. Everyone here and at other AFL clubs admire his work, skill and loyalty. Barry Gavin is Hawthorn.

“The Hawthorn Football Club wishes Barry a speedy recovery and our thoughts are with Di and his family.”

Gavin, who is resting at home, is looking forward to resuming an involvement at Glenferrie once he returns to full health.

All the best to Barry and his family

Is he related to you Suzi?

:D

Well with the story at hand, the guy is 57 is he? Gee, my dad is like 55, and he is one fit bugger for his age. Cycles to work some days too, and when he was undergoing health tests, apparently the nurses were very impressed! He looks younger than 55 too ;).

I suffer from a congenital liver complaint so I know how he feels.

Not that I am seriously affected yet.

But you learn to live one day at a time.

Eeek , thas no good. Oh well, best of luck in getting better! :)

RIP Barry. You were a vital member of the Hawks family during some incredibly successful times and some credit for that success must go to you and your support team. Rewatch any of those old game on tv and you will almost certainly see Barry on the sidelines frenetically working to get the boys right to come back onto the ground. Was a Hawthorn man through and through and will be sorely missed by the club.
