Is he someone we want? I dont think we need him but the interesting thing that could happen is if he doesnt get traded he will go into the draft. Freo could very well pick him up at No.1 seen as they need a young reliable goalscorer and someone with some toughness.

If Freo take him at No.1 and the Saints go with victorian talent that leaves us with Polack?

Do you think Freo would take him if he entered the draft?

We definately could do with a CHF. If he was available in the draft (which I doubt), and the Eagles had an opportunity to pick him up, we'd be mad not to.

Can someone clarify this for me please?:

Do Freo necessarily get pick #1, or are Freo, Saints and Eagles drawn out of a hat to see who gets the first priority pick?

um well, no I don't think so. All things going right, we will get Darren Gaspar(doubt it, but it could happen) this means we have Travis gaspar, Andrew mcDougall and David Seirakowski all there for CHF, don't need another
If we don't get Gaspar(this is the scenario I see) we still have Serira and mc Dougall, and also we may possibly get mark Porter if Woosha comes home, so Gards could also go to CHF. Don't need Barry Hall.

You could be right EKA, im not too cluey on the whole drafting thing. Hall might be in a separate draft to the youngsters. Maybe Vis, VOR or WCE2000 can help out, they seem to know a bit about drafting.

If there is to different drafts, one pre season draft and the National draft what picks do we get in which?? Im actually quite lost. I will wait until someone clears this up for me :)

There are actually three drafts. Main then pre-season and rookie.

Freo get priority pick 1 in main draft, Saints 2, WCE 3. Freo then get 4, Saints 5 and WCE 6.

If Hall is out of contract he can nominate for either draft but most probably the main draft where Freo can pick him up.

After the main draft clubs usually leave a place or two open and invite half a dozen players to train with them. They pick up the best of them in the pre-season draft. Last year Matt Connell trained with WCE but was not picked. Similarly Rintoul went to Collingwood as they offered more money and WCE had cap problems.

I don't want Hall, he is bad news. WCE are already getting a reputation for misbehaving (rintoul+Taxi, last weeks incident, the year before with gards, etc). Last thing we need is a boof head like him.

potential trades i don't want :
Hall, Farmer, Rioli, Lockyer, Lane, McKernan

potential trades i do want :
Gaspar, Lucas, Barnard

Thats my thoughts basically. Ohh, and picks #3 and #6 should be on the untouchables list.

you don't want Lockyer, whats wrong with you
and I thought there was a deadline for the main draft, the national draft, and this was not usually for ex players, but I must be wrong.

Lockyer is 178cm short, it has been highlighted before on this board that we need taller midfielders, defenders and forwards. He would come too expensive for his height.

I didn't base my wants and not-wants on who i like, but rather on what we need and what we would have to give up.

Lockyer wouldn't come cheap.

I'm not sure Hall is a boofhead, though of course he has been brought up in St. Boofhead City. Anecdotally I hear he's one of the better ones. He's a useful player who with good coaching by (say) Woosha could channel his aggression much more effectively. But he is asking for a lot of money and I expect will want to stay in the Eastern States.

I fell that generally we should be growing our own Lockyers - had we been concentrating, East Fremantle seem to have been producing at least one a year for a while.

In other words, I wouldn't be paying too much money for any established "stars" except Gaspar. Certainly don't want Lucas, McKernan or Farmer.

fair enough, but I still think he would be an asset to the side, and I would take him if we could get him. Sure he wouldn't come cheap, but if we couldn't get the others we want I reckon he would be good.

So my theory still stands then that Hall could nominate for the main draft and Freo would have the option to pick him up? I think they probably will, he's 24 and kicked 44 goals last season in 17 games, thats not a bad return. He also kicked those goals from shoddy delivery, the Saints dont have the best midfield, especially with Harvey and Burke out. If anything the Dockers have an ok midfield.

If they do pick him up and presuming the Saints go with victorian talent we could have the option of picking Polack?

No way hosé!

Jod ...

2 things:

1. There is no way in any universe that Barry Hall is a potential #1, or even top 20 pick in the AFL Draft - if he was to nominate, then I would envisage him to go around where Antony Rocca was taken - mid 30's at the earliest!

2. I went to a recruting talk about 3 weeks ago now, with Phil Smart and Cameron Schwab speaking at length about the club, their direction etc - and it was at this time Cameron Schwab was discussing the fact that all recruits, be they playing or administration/coaching be a quality individual - a quality person willing to do the team things. It was then, he said with a laugh 'So you can count out Barry Hall!'

So in short - if you guys want Barry Hall at , or even 6 in the draft, he'll be yours for sure :)

You would be very, very surprised, Kuepper. The difference betwen the example you gave was that Sav Rocca was delisted without any hint of anyone wanting him in a swap -- whereas Barry Hall is on the market, and will demand quality in return if traded -- from reports a first round pick would most probably be included in any package for him. If a club is willing to sacrifice a first round draft pick (and more) during trading, why wouldn't they be ok with using that same pick on drafting him?

Have a look at the players picked up in the range you suggested (30 to, say, 50) last year.... Pike, Sziller, Rocca, Wakelin, and Trent Carrol.... not exactly in the same league as Barry Hall. If he nominated for the main draft (which he wont because I'm pretty sure the money hungry prick wont be allowed to put a price on his head whereas in the pre season draft he can), I wouldn't be suprised if he went in the top 10.

What you gotta remember is that most kids in the draft are picked up in the hope that they turn into a player of Barry Hall's callibre (if not off field demeanor, which is usually blown right out of proportion with St kilda especially)... so in effect, by selecting the gun mature age player, they're taking away the risk that the pimply faced kid wont turn into a gun. Obviously some clubs wont take Barry, in the hope that the kid they opt for instead, turns into a better player than Hall... but take a look at the last decades top 10 selections at drafts to see how that gamble usually works out.

Thirdly -- Drafting/trading for 'good people' is all well and good... but if having to select one drunkard could prove the difference between a premiership or merely making the finals.... would you select him? Ask Schwaby that question, because I think he might be alone (in the AFL) with that line of thinking. Nathan Brown is a good example of that philosophy .... 9 clubs passed up on selecting him in the 96 draft because they had heard 'stories' about him and his drinking problems.... thanks guys :D

Dont be so sure Kuepper, you dont have a quality forward to speak of and a ready made 24 year old who will come straight in and kick goals is a conundrum that the FFC will not just pass up without some thought. You could very well pick him up.
