I still dont understand how Jim Moss became convinced that Gene was responsible for his Daughters death.

It seemed to all be to do with the money. And them not understanding why Barry would kill Gene's girlfriend, but then give him 250k.

Tbh, there was so much in the final season that made no sense.

Why did Sally think she was a murderer? The only guy she killed was that guy who was about to kill her in season 3 and she fought him off.

It was an okay final episode, but season 4 was disappointing.

Was definitely to do with the money. Although I still don’t understand how he essentially gave Barry a pass for it after that.

I was wondering about Sally’s murderer comments and just assumed I’d forgotten something.

Pretty sure the golden age refers to quality. Not cultural impact.

ps. I would argue squid game has had just as big if not bigger cultural impact for a single season.

Neither shows are in my top 10.

The last 4 years has been a little weaker on quality but i think the pandemic has upset the tv landscape a bit. And now so will the writers strike. But it should bounce back after.

succession, mrs maisel, chernobyl, dopesick, queens gambit have all been very high quality shows released over this period. Barry has been a pretty solid one as well although not quite at their level.
Fair points. I'll correct myself and say it's combination of quality and viewership.

Game of Thrones was apparently quality but fell off a cliff (full disclosure- I haven't seen it).

Squid Game had the following but the quality was "merely" good.

Of the other shows you listed Chernobyl was first class but only a miniseries (in the sense that miniseries don't really build audiences).
Queen's Gambit was similar in quality to Squid Game.
I'll checkout Dopesick that sounds fascinating, thanks!
Mrs Maisal is next on my watch list so excited for that.
Succession apparently has the quality but the audience compared to GoT, Breaking Bad, Sopranos pales in comparison. Even Better Call Saul had 175 pages of conversation on this forum compared to Succession's 25 pages.

Point being there's so many shows now it's diluted the quality somewhat but also audiences significantly and they are linked (less people watch so not as much investment is made --> lowers the quality --> lowers the audience).

I've derailed the thread though sorry.

Going to watch the Barry finale soon.

The Golden Age of television died with Game of Thrones. Nothing else has come close to having it's following and cultural impact.

On Barry. It's been a decent but hardly mindblowing final season.

To me "final nail in the coffin" means it's well and truly over. I'm not sure when exactly it died, but I think it's telling that it almost certainly came after the arrival of Netflix and the streaming services.

I thought the finale was excellent, and suitably cynical. The final season might not have been perfect television, but it was an interesting show, willing to take interesting chances, and chose to end itself at the right time. I'll miss it.

Now to the Succession finale!

It took the words 'dark comedy' to a whole other level.

There are individual character beats where I think the show lost its handle on, but from an atmospheric standpoint it was pretty brilliant. Bill Hader might be as talented behind the camera as he is in front of it.

Still, not sure I loved the final scene even if the season had been building to it and it's message was in keeping with the satirical nature of the show (also big Jim Cummings fan).

Think there's a case to be made that it could have finished on a true high-point and be satisfying it if finished with the S3 finale...

Pretty decent ending in the end

But **** me the last series just seemed so rushed

It's like they left the end of an episode with a cliff hanger and then in the next episode never actually addressed the cliff hanger

I would say it is a golden age of TV purely because of the big name Hollywood actors that have been willing to do tv shows when previously there never would have entertained the idea

I reckon the streaming services have started to kill the cinema and their budgets and this is a bi product

Rank the first two series as the best. Third just behind. This fourth was good but a little way behind. Not as many memorable/noteworthy scenes.
Be interesting to see what Hader does next

This show encapsulates everything wrong with streaming shows today. There must be a lot of money tapping into the average moron’s idea of offbeat humour, and the result is we get rubbish shows like Barry.

You didn't like the show.

Little confused

Your point seemed to be that people that watch streaming services are "average morons" and to demonstrate that point you cited Barry, a multiple Emmy award winning comedy/drama on HBO.
No no no I was just saying there is a type of show that uses this dumb brand of humour and is currently popular on streaming platforms (i.e., The Good Place).

Barry is a crap show. Not funny, not smart, no well acted, not interesting. Nothing. Don’t care how many awards it’s won. It’s not good.

Maybe you'd be better off watching something like the big bang theory
