Need some quick help on this one - having drinks next week in Melbourne and looking for somewhere with a good vibe. Girl I'm going with is one with somewhat refined taste (her favourite hangout is the Emerald Peacock ) so looking for somewhere a bit wanky although not overly so if possible - we intend to get sloshed. I'm resigned to spending a bit anyway so price is a secondary consideration.

If possible, in a good central locale so we can kick on elsewhere fairly easily. Bridge Road is out. We're eating in St Kilda so somewhere around there would be a bonus - otherwise, I'm staying in the CBD.

Not a great deal in St Kilda, if you were keen to stay around there you could try Mink. I have a few drinks at Barney Allens and think it's a pretty good bar but i don't think it matches what you're looking for.

In the CBD, google these and see if any take your fancy. They are all a bit "wanky". Blue Diamond Club, 1806, Silk Road, Collins Quarter, Supper Club, Cookie, Red Hummingbird (owned by the same people as emerald peacock).

Collins Quarter is a great place to hang after work, grab a few fancy froths, smoke a cigar on the rooftop smoking room, all in a great central locaction.

Gin Palace, Great place to take a lady if you want to impress and inebriate, charming and intimate with some of the best bar work in Australia.

Madame Brussels, quirky, weird, full of gorgeous women and oddities. Make sure you are dressed for the occasion however, this place is not casual in any sense of the word.

And, if you are after some breakfast drop into the Malthouse cafe at Southbank on a Saturday morning for an fine brew of coffee or perhaps a cheeky bloody Mary.

[/shamelessplug]

Fair few bars and rooftop places a bit of Fitzroy Street (think it's Fitzroy street).

Just come off the foreshore a bit, couple of more jazz type bars back there. IF not, tram it into the city.

Dude what happened to your 'Rate Your Day' posts?

Anyone been to Spice Market? It's in an old undeground food court somewhere around Russell St.

I went in there on a Wednesday afternoon and wasn't busy. It was nearly empty so was pretty cool. I did however get the feeling that when full the suit wearing w***er factor would be quite high.

Anyone have an opnion on this place?

My flatmates love going to Spice Market, dress like a classy gentleman and make sure you go earlyish as it can be difficult to get into as the night progresses.

I've heard of it and heard that it's full of northern suburb marios and marias.

Isn't it on spring street at the hyatt?

Double happiness is a good bar and upstairs there's another bar that has been inspired by vaginas, seriously, i don't like it because it feels like a fire hazard.

Spice Market is pretty much the corner for Russell and Collins streets. I walked past it on the way to Cherry Friday night and your description of the clientele is pretty accurate.

I would classify them as people who dress up to go out rather than wearing a suit to work and kicking on after crowd.

Cookie on Swanston street or the Cartlon on Burke could be your go although the Carlton are not huge on suits some nights.

Der Raum in Richmond is great, but your secondary budget theory will more than likely become a primary issue if you head there (expensive as!)

Black Pearl on Brunswick St is good.

St Kilda isn't the best for actual bars per se, maybe Cushion or Robata or whatever it's called but otherwise I'd head into the city.

Gin Palace is probably where I'd head in the CBD also.

Be a man and go to Biero.

Sentido is great, but it's not a place I would have thought to take a girl to half impress her.

Perhaps on a warm Sunday arvo, but not particularly interested in sitting outside at night in Melbourne's weather - poor girls get cold if you're just sitting around! Unless you intend to dance to their interesting music choices :D

Another garden for a warm arvo/evening would be the upstairs beer garden at Bimbo Deluxe on Brunswick Street, or even the upstairs beer garden at the Corner Hotel. Also around the corner is the beer garden at The London Tavern - though as I stated probably not what you're aiming for.

elephant and wheelbarrow fitzroy st
