Is there any way we can name an extra player into the squad to compensate Bartel's absence, or are we just stuck with the squad as named last night? I'd have thought if we could name an extra player, it'd either be Prismall or Rooke. Handy replacements there, fitness permitting.

Balmey is now on SEN saying Jimmy has had it out (op is over), and will be 1-2 weeks. Wasn't a burst appendix just inflamed. Balmey reckons DJ may come in this week for him. Balmey said Jimmy is a pretty hard man to keep down but they will give him the 2 weeks if he needs it. They are not worried so much as top spot is secure (paraphrasing). He was asked if this was Choccos prediction come true and he said if Chocco thinks losing one player is going to be the downfall of this team then he is kidding himself (paraphrasing).

Thanks for the update CF.

Someone just 'reported' on the main board that he had ruptured it.
Nearly gave me a heart attack.

STAR Geelong midfielder Jimmy Bartel is likely to miss the remainder of the home-and-away season after surgery on Friday afternoon to have his appendix removed.

Bartel, one of the favourites for this year’s Brownlow Medal, was admitted to a Geelong hospital on Thursday night after becoming ill earlier in the day.

Geelong football manager Neil Balme told afl.com.au on Friday afternoon that doctors decided surgery was the best form of treatment.

“I’m pretty sure that’ll happen (surgery) any minute now,” Balme told afl.com.au.

“He’s just been a bit sensitive (around the area)…they weren’t sure whether they were going to have to do it (take it out) but I’m almost certain they are.”

However the Cats, who have already sewn up the minor premiership, expect Bartel to be back in time for their September campaign.

Balme said the club was almost certain its gun midfielder should be fit for Geelong’s qualifying final.

“They’re one, two (weeks) maximum now with keyhole (surgery),” he said.

Bartel’s loss is another blow for the Cats’ on-ball brigade ahead of Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash with Port Adelaide.

Geelong had already lost Joel Selwood (general soreness) for the round 21 match at Skilled Stadium.

Lazy reporting, clearly just rested. As reported in the Addy, he was asked earlier in the week how his body was and he said it felt the best it has since the start of the year.

what do you expect from the media. Just on the SEN news they said he would miss at least 2 weeks then played Blamey saying he will miss 1 to 2 weeks maximum.

Using the "glass half full" mentality it just means that Jimmy won't suffer a season-ending knee injury in the next 2 weeks. Gives him a couple of weeks to freshen up..:)

Also, you'd rather it happen now when lets face the next 2 games are not crucial as you already have top spot sewn up. Would have been much worse if it happend in 2 or 3 weeks time.

Better now than later, I suppose.

DJ or Byrnes to come in (I'd play the former, although the club may wish to play Chappy or Stokes in more full-time midfield roles, meaning Byrnes would have to fulfill the small lead up forward role in their place).

Undefeated all year in my SuperCoach league and now lose my fourth player to injury just this week! Oh well.

On a more serious note, Prismall is listed in the VFL side. Any chance of playing?

Is this a blessing in disguise? 2 week rest maybe good although of course we dont want his health to be in jeapordy.

Im really excited about the finals ay. IM in the US at the moment but im back in time for the last round!

Blessing in disguise? What the hell?

Last time I checked, having one of your best players in hopsital isn't a blessing in disguise. How the hell can it be classified as a rest when he is in hopsital.

OMGosh I just heard the news via SMS from my brother. I thought he was just playing a trick (as big brothers do)... but no, it's true.

So who's gonna replace him? Prissa can't really coz he is only just coming back from a broken wrist. Surely Byrnesy will be definitely in the team now. Going to be a tough game with one of or best players out but then again we can beat Port with out him, it just makes me a bit more nervous.

Get well soon Jimmy!!!!!! We need you back quick.

Neil Blame said David Johnson is looking likely but they will apply to the AFL to be able to name another emergency which could mean Selwood may come back in. There has been reports that selwood has just been rested and the soreness thing is crap...I guess we wait and see what happens
