Is mackie top 50? He's had a pretty good year IMO
Very underrated, I thought it was just about his best and he was AA squad a few years back.

As for Jimmy, played a few great games but obviously playing with a fractured foot took its toll. Considering his start to the year I can't believe it was anything but. Fit again next year and I suspect he'll be right up there again. He was by far our best in the first 5 or so rounds when we were struggling IMO

I,ve been watching the replays on FoxFooty of all our games, think its up to Round 7 so far,and yep,
Jimmys been pretty solid, better than i remembered actually, and like you said, probably in our best 3 so far
for the year.

Wouldn't care where Jimmy is rated by anyone....

He is a triple premiership player, norm-smith medallist (almost x 3) and brownlow medallist and will continue to be a key in our bid for a fourth in this great era'. Already one of our greats.

RD2, Jimmy's 2nd half pretty much wins us the game. No Jimmy, no 4 points

http://www.smartreplay.afl.com.au/?...209&eventType=Goal&seek=5760&videoQuality=med
RD4, Jimmy's 4th quarter was simply brilliant, 2nd half he had 14 touches & 5 tackles.
This passage of play typified his ability to step up when the game was on the line
http://www.smartreplay.afl.com.au/?...407&eventType=Goal&seek=6910&videoQuality=med
RD6, Once again the game is in the balance and Jimmy kicks two goals in a row to send the margin out to 5 goals and the game is won from there as we kick another two goals to finish the 1st half
http://www.smartreplay.afl.com.au/?...03&eventType=Goal&seek=3058&videoQuality=high
http://www.smartreplay.afl.com.au/?...03&eventType=Goal&seek=3210&videoQuality=high
RD9, Mr Clutch again kicks an invaluable goal to give the Cats a handy 2 goal buffer with 7:30 left in the last quarter. Was quiet for 2 quarters before he, along with Chapman and Johnson (BOG) stepped it up
http://www.smartreplay.afl.com.au/?round=1093&match=10340901&eventType=Goal&seek=6474&videoQuality=high
RD10 & RD13, Jimmy was arguably BOG - 32 disposals (13 contested), 7 marks & 27 disposals (10 contested), 9 marks respectfully

http://www.smartreplay.afl.com.au/?...ype=contestedMark&seek=5557&videoQuality=high
RD14, Kelly, Bartel, Selwood our best as it's wet weather footy and Jimmy amasses 10 touches in the 1st quarter.
RD15, Jimmy suspended for 2 weeks for elbowing McKenzie off the ball
http://www.smartreplay.afl.com.au/?...08&eventType=free&seek=3011&videoQuality=high
RD18 & RD19, Jimmy was well below his usual standards, played two relatively poor games in succession as question marks were raised as to the relevance of wearing the long sleeved guernsey against Adelaide
http://www.smartreplay.afl.com.au/?...ype=contestedMark&seek=1317&videoQuality=high
RD22, Jimmy steps it up after another two relatively quiet weeks, was amongst our best players contributing 21 disposals (9 contested) across half back flank.
RD23, finishes off the year in fine form heading into September gathering another 21 disposals (12 contested), 9 marks across half back flank as Geelong beat Sydney by 5 goals

So as you can clearly see, Jimmy was not poor at all.
He was ok by his own standards which are pretty high in comparison to most players in the comp but he did play a lot more matches across half back flank which is why he didn't stand out as consistently.
If it wasn't for Jimmy's brilliant last quarters in quite a few games this year, we would have had trouble getting the 4 points on the board.

Let's say out of 400 players who make up the best 22 in each of the 18 teams, Bartel averaged 20 touches (9 contested), 5 marks, 6 tackles, 3 pressure acts, 12 goals & 14 goal assists per game and you don't believe he makes the top 50 in the league?

he wouldn't be in the top 30 perhaps, but he would easily make inside the remaining 20 spots.

As has been pointed out many times Jimmeh was given a number of differing roles this year. He performed them so well - with a broken leg for a good part of the season - he finished 6th in the Carji. Only a handful of votes behind Kel who many thought had a cracker year. Such was the Match Committees view of his year.

As for Sheehan's opinion. Pfft!

No he wouldn't. He was not top 50 for 2012. Just wasn't. But who gives a #### what Sheehan thinks anyway.

not disputing your opinion and I do care somewhat what Sheahan writes as it's read by many footy followers and those who don't footy as closely as us may take his word for it but what would your top 50 be if you did have a chance to put one together?

Don't know but an injured Bartel is just not in it. Is no knock on him, he had a debilitating foot injury. Hell is probably still in a moon boot now from it. Did amazingly well to just be an above average player with it.

If he was fit and firing like finals 2011 he is still in the top 5 players in the comp as he can literally do it all and is one of the most well rounded footballers of all time.

I guess but he didn't play with the foot injury all season, looking at the way his stats seemed to waive, looks like he suffered the foot injury at RD16 or thereabouts

Think it happened well before then. He was massive in our wins over the Hawks and even the Tigers (had he continued in that form he was easily top 10) before really dropping away impact wise (whilst still being pretty useful overall).

Typical offseason fluff piece.

Hope he will spend some time in the middle next year. As good as he is everywhere else, I still feel he is at his best in the guts.

it's good that he's not spending his last years in the middle isn't it?
It means the club believe the younger brigade have what it takes to come through and replace them.

Hate to be in St Kilda's shoes or even Hawthorn's who will again rely on blokes 30+ while we can now have Duncan, Christensen, Caddy & Poodle really start to take the next step and have the likes of Chappy, Bartel and Corey spend much less time in the middle so they can be kept relatively fresh for the back end of the season.

Does it annoy anyone else that Bartel is going to be given less time in the midfield this year so they can develop their younger onballers? I always believe you just play your best players in their best positions. Why waste a jet like Bartel's last few years in football just so you can give kids a bit more of a run through the middle?

That's cool, I am more of a Robinson fan. Wish they would stop wasting Robinson by playing Judd through the middle so much ;)

exactly, another reason why Ratten was an average coach, his management of players was poor and Judd has lost a good 2 seasons because of having to shoulder the brunt of the work for too long.
You watch Mick Malthouse come in and he'll play Judd across half back flank and even down forward more than ever before and will likely pro-long his career for another year while allowing others to develop.

I don't care much about the opinion of a superannuated hack.
I don't care whether anyone thinks he's in the top 50.
I would just like him to go on being one of our best players ever.

does that mean Hodgepodge was right?

god I hate that flog
his posts are so demeaning and offensive to Geelong's past/present players that you can't help but check in to see what he's come up with now.

He's one of the reasons why I make it my ambition to bring down their club and players and will continue to do so until he is given the arse.
Can imagine talking to him at the pub when the topic of conversation usually drifts from boobs to footy and he starts talking down Yablett and Bartel, Chappy etc...

Everybody needs a purpose in life.
I'm glad to see you have chosen a noble one.
