Anyways, one of my fave bass players would be Jessie Keeler, the bloke off Death from above 1979, now they were a band, very catchy bass riffs.

+1

+1 for OM as mentioned by Schism as well.

I'll never forget when I first heard DFA79, the bass sounded so thick and heavy that I couldn't believe there was no guitar involved. I wish he ended up joining QOTSA like he was rumoured to, that would have been insane.

Les Claypool is another one of my favourite bass players, the fact he sings as well makes him even more impressive.

I play guitar, but a great bass player is highly important to a band's sound, rather than just playing the root notes, so yeah, I have a lot of time for bass.

One of my favourite bass lines is the intro to this song:

Ah 46 and 2, was playing that just a little while ago, a bit tricky but its not overly complicated or hard to learn, something good for starters to show off to people:thumbsu:

I don't go crazy for the bass guitar but I've recently paid attention to the bass lines of "Breed" by Nirvana and "On Call" by Kings of Leon and they're great!

"Behind the Sun" by RHCP probably has my fave base line.

JC was BOG at the BDO when they played.

He also sent me a card on my wedding day. He's a good kid, loves a pint.

Some of the best bass players I have had the pleasure of seeing play would be:

Ian Rilen (X and Rose Tattoo)
Fernando Saunders (Lou Reed)
Lemmy (Motorhead)

the funny thing is i was listening to some of u2's dvds on a really good sound system

and adam clayton and larry mullen's work can really be heard on those dvds on those sound systems

before, in the old days, with portable radios etc, u2 were pretty much known for bono's vocals and the edge's guitar work. and not much was written about adam or larry's work on the rhythm section

even on an innocuous track like 'Daddy's gonna pay for your crashed car' performed at the Zootv Live in Sydney DVD you can hear Adam's Bass

Rattle and Hum, even though it is a pretentious and disappointing movie overall, had some fantastic music production. you cant help but be entertained if you didnt take it so seriously.

other dvds with amazing bass sound and drum lines: Talking Heads - Stop Making Sense. the first track where david byrne walks on stage says 'hi, i have a tape to play' and presses play on stage on a really tiny radio, and then 'BANG!' a huge shock to the system with the crunchy and chunky sound coming out

Im looking for a nice Bass distortion pedal, anyone know?

The stuff im playing right now is more Ska/punk but im in some lame-ass gothy synth band, something odd and unusual would be right up my alley

As a fan of mainly punk rock Matt Freeman of Rancid is easily the standout bass player in that genre.

Lex when he was in Frenzal Rhomb was pretty friggen awesome, songs like It's Up To You, Richer than you etc, was the driving sound of that band whilst there

Bought a cheap bass off a friend about a month ago, haven't played since high school. Has been good messing around on it again, playing through tabs online (only ones I feel are pretty accurate though, some are appallingly bad). Started off with easy songs like Africa (lol) and Iron Man, and went from there. Just played through A Day in the Life perfectly two days ago, haven't been able to hit it since. I always mess Paul's Middle Eight part.

Played through a lot of Led Zep, Pink Floyd, and Beatles... some Nirvana, though most of that is pretty easy. I'll see if I can graduate to faster pieces as the months roll on.

But I'm having fun.

I've just recently bought a Boss ODB-3 Bass Overdrive Pedal. It's pretty flexible, sounds good, doesn't lose the bottom and easy to fiddle with. I don't use it much and do tend to run it with an octaver for some more balls.
I find distortion has gotten a bit lost playing live (depending on the venue) but then again its only new so I may need to fiddle some more

If you're into ska/punk check out Royce and Rich from the Suicide Machines - 2 of my most favourite bass players.

Also +1 for Matt Freeman

McCartney is the god of bass players.

Paperback Writer/Rain are two of the best examples while in The Beatles.

+1 on Justin Chancellor at the big day out, an awesome clunky tone and just solid stuff, v good, an awesome rhythm section with D Carey!

Some of my fave bassists would be Geddy Lee, Steve Harris, John Myung, Lemmy, Geezer, the list goes on really but these are the main ones. Oh yeah, Cliff Burton and Rob Trujillo! :thumbsu:

Yeah the ODB-3 pedal is pretty sweet. What sort of amp do you have delirious1? I recently picked up a Big Bass Muff & can't speak highly enough about it. The lows are so fat & massive it will rattle your soul - plus everyone else in your suburb! Even rolling back the dirt you still have a pretty nice fat sound, mine's on most of the time. Also check out the Sansamp VT Bass pedal, you might be impressed. If you can take your setup to a store & test the pedals with your actually rig. Not always possible though I know.

Lemmy (Motorhead)

Great call. One of my earliest gigs was playing on a bill with X amongst other great bands - as a young, slightly awestruck bassist, it made my day when Rilen asked if he could use my quad box to set up a monster rig which I also got to use.

I'd add as my influences:

John Entwhistle - The Who
Dee Dee Ramone - The Ramones (showed me I could play bass)
Warwick Gilbert - Radio Birdman
James Darroch - The Celibate Rifles
Bill Gibson - The Eastern Dark
Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath
Joe Bouchard - Blue Oyster Cult
Tim Hemmensley - Powder Monkeys
