Is there any bass players out there, of so how long did it take you to master. Also if you can play acoustic how long did that take to learn.

Guilty.

I've only been playing for a year or so, hence I'd put myself in the "fledgling" category, mainly because I don't get to practice enough. I play by Tab because I can't read Music, I'm sure to get better I probably need to need do more study in that area.

My progress so far has been OK, most of the songs I try to play I can usually get all the main parts to it pretty quickly, it's just putting it all together in a consistent manner that is still the hard bit. I'm sure that will come with more practice - just need to find more time & dedication. The closet I have got so far is on Money by Pink Floyd which is what I have been trying to play ever since I got my Bass - I'm getting there, slowly!

I mainly play just for enjoyment & fun though, taught myself Us & Them by Pink Floyd last night which was very enjoyable. My other main favourite to play would be I Wanna Be Adored by The Stone Roses, love that song, great Bassline!

7 years, high school jazz band captain represent yo.
found if you have played guitar before its a easy transaction and your not completely hopeless to BEGUIN WITH, but if you think bass is going to be as easy as you first pick it up, your wrong

what kind of bands are you into? i can recommend some, main thing when you start is not to try and break the speed/play faster, keep it constant, if you want to get really good, practise an hour+ a day, and playing 10-20 minutes a day is Much more effective then playing a solid 2 hour block once or twice a week

there are websites for different scales, warm ups ect. which will get your finger speed quicker ect. just serch google

Ive played the start of white stripes so that is a good start. im not bad on a acoustic and ive got the letters and the fingering will get there, ill give it one year before time to give up.

Well still not mastered, just enjoying it

Can tell ya though your fingers learn to move pretty fast with a bass - tried playing the elec after learning bass for about a year and a half and was clumsy as

Yeh its really hard to switch from playing bass to a acoustic or electric. the fingering as well and the frets are abit further with a bass. Right now im trying to play Simple plan and Greenday ones because they are easy.

Ive finally found a pack that suits me, the pack includes a 15 watt amp, is that loud. I reckon it is ok, it should be loud enough. Reply please.

Deeman the 15 watter should be fine for personal practice but you will need to upgrade if you intend to accompany a drumkit.

Played for around 13 years. Mostly metal stuff but the last few years moved from a pick to finger playing (the best thing i ever did). Fingers give the sound so much more feel.

As above with practise make sure you do something everyday. When I moved from pick to fingers i practised everyday for about an hour for three months until i had the speed in my picking hand. It hurt for the first couple of weeks but after that no problems.

Ive played on a friends one a few times, i tried with nopick and it really hurt my fingers. Ill start on a pick first then ill try fringers later.

played guitar for around 6 years.. and being a rhcp fan i naturally had to eventually be tempted into bass playing through years of watching fleas brilliance... i've been playin for a few months and im absolutly killing it.. already in a band and can play most of fleas stuff.. i wish id played it for longer as id be a beast by now.. picked up slapping well which i thought id struggle with.. oh and one other thing, bass players that use picks instead of their fingers when it isnt necessary are soft

first of al how old r u ?

Reason i ask is so i can gague the harshness of the reply.

Im 15. I really shouldve started a long time ago, but its never to late.

ok.

put a pick in ur hand and see if u ca play in time with another song.
Doesn't have to be the same bass line they r playing, just play quarter notes.

If u can keep time u r halfway there - if u cant,i would suggest you buy a bbq instead.

ps - Led Zeps "Black Dog is in "E"...which is the thickest string on the bass.....have a go

Are you learning to play bass so you can play in a band?

If not, it would probably be better to learn to play a 6-string. I've been playing guitar for almost 4 years now and as soon as I picked up a bass I could play basically everything but frantic slap/funk (which IMO is the only fun thing to play on bass).

My friend had been playing bass for 2 years and has had a 6-string for about 2 years and he is still struggling to play simple songs. He started on bass because he thought it would be much easier than learning guitar, but it really isn't that hard. And if you can play an acoustic 6-string guitar you can play electric and bass. Definitely the best way to start.

And a 15 watt amp is enough for a beginner, but soon enough you will go down to music stores and try out the bigger amps and realise how shit a 15w amp sounds compared to them.

My first amp was a 15 watt Marshall. It sounded crap, so I went and bought a $400 DigiTech effects processor.

I then bought a 200 watt Randall amp and don't use the DigiTech because it screws up the briliant sound of my amp.

I really thought you weren't supposed to use a pick to play bass. Properly. But then...bass players..."properly"...;)

One of my best friends has just started teaching himself bass and he certainly doesn't use one...maybe he should?

I was playing around on a acoustic for a while, i got ok and i reckon i have the potential to be pretty good, but ive broken my ring finger so many times, it makes it hard for me to be able to play with 2 fingers well. Thats the main reason i want to play bass, because you dont have as much shifting with the ring finger, yeh i wouldnt mind playing in a band abit later on. Ill see how i go anyway.

The reason i dont want to use a pick is because it hurts your fingers alot after playing on it for a while, when my fingers become bigger then ill consider using my fingers.

what school did you go too?
Kent Street:o i was captain for my last year, i was one of the three in the band who were over year 10, so it wasnt much to write about...it just makes me sound good:thumbsu:
