Phantom Draft, Version 1
Here's my first fully complete phantom draft

1. Riley Thilthorpe (Tall Forward/South Australia) (Adelaide)
2. Jammara Ugle-Hagen (Tall Forward/Vic Country) (Western Bulldogs) (MATCHED BID)
3. Logan McDonald (Tall Forward/Western Australia) (North Melbourne)
4. Denver Grainger-Barrass (Tall Defender/Western Australia) (Sydney)
5. Will Phillips (Inside Midfielder/Vic Metro) (Hawthorn)
6. Braedan Campbell (Inside Midfielder/New South Wales) (Sydney) (MATCHED BID)
7. Elijah Hollands (General Forward/Vic Country) (Gold Coast)
8. Zach Reid (Tall Defender/Vic Country) (Essendon)
9. Tanner Bruhn (Inside Midfielder/Vic Country) (Essendon)
10. Archie Perkins (General Forward/Vic Metro) (Essendon)
11. Lachlan Jones (General Defence/South Australia) (Port Adelaide) (MATCHED BID)
12. Finlay Macrae (Outside Midfielder/Vic Metro) (Adelaide)
13. Heath Chapman (Tall Defender/Western Australia) (GWS)
14. Nik Cox (Tall Defender/Vic Metro) (North Melbourne)
15. Oliver Henry (General Forward/Vic Country) (Fremantle)
16. Jack Carroll (Outside Midfielder/Western Australia) (GWS)
17. Brayden Cook (General Forward/South Australia) (Collingwood)
18. Jack Ginnivan (General Forward/Vic Country) (GWS)
19. Caleb Poulter (General Forward/South Australia) (Collingwood)
20. Kaine Baldwin (Tall Forward/South Australia) (Richmond)
21. Isiah Winder (Small Forward/Western Australia) (Melbourne)
22. Nathan O'Driscoll (Outside Midfielder/Western Australia) (Melbourne)
23. Reef McInnes (Inside Midfielder/Vic Metro) (Collingwood) (MATCHED BID)
24. Errol Gulden (Small Forward/New South Wales) (Sydney) (MATCHED BID)
25. Zavier Maher (Inside Midfielder/Vic Country) (GWS)
26. Max Heath (Ruckman/Vic Metro) (St Kilda)
27. Tom Powell (Inside Midfielder/South Australia) (Adelaide)
28. Eddie Ford (General Forward/Vic Metro) (Adelaide)
29. Jackson Callow (Tall Forward/Tasmania) (Hawthorn)
30. Shannon Neale (Ruckman/Western Australia) (Brisbane)

There's a few clubs I wasn't 100% sure on pick wise (Hawthorn, GWS) but I'm pretty happy with most my picks here. Managed to balance my personal rankings with what I think will actually happen come draft night. A few picks were based off of media speculation/rumours (Ginnivan to GWS for example).

I think the draft could have a few big climbers this year. Last year we saw some pretty interesting picks like Francis Evans to Geelong at Pick 41 and Lachie Gollant to Adelaide at Pick 48, and I think we'll see some similar patterns this year. I think we might also see a few more mature agers/19 year olds then most expect (Alec Waterman, Sam Fisher, Isaac Wareham, James Rowe etc top the list for me) with clubs potentially looking back at players they overlooked last year with late/rookie picks.

I have Heath in the mix, more as a list need. Ford & Powell, would have to be in serious contention, best available?

Powell I definitely had in contention for the Saints pick, but I think the acquisition of Crouch + the young Byrnes and Bytel developing, both of which I rate highly, made me go with Heath as you said for list need reasons.

Don’t think Baldwin will be drafted at all let alone in first round. IMO
Not a bad call. Almost didn't have him going first round but if there's any team that's going to pick him it would be Richmond.

If Gold coast score Hollands they are going to be adding some more serious talent to their squad

On that order
Powell & Ford for Richmond
Baldwin with 2 x Knee's wouldn't be high on our list i wouldnt think

Not sure a ruckman is a massive need for Brisbane more outside speed to help Bailey and Cockatoo
Just my influence on the draft board. Banging on and on about a ruckman.
I could have gone a few ways with Brisbane but I settled on Heath because from what I've watched of Brisbane over the past 2 years, I think that Oscar McInerney might not become as good of a ruckman that Brisbane want him to be. While I haven't seen too much of Heath compared to some of the other ruckman in this draft, I know that from people who have watched him at his best, he's described as someone with a lot of upside.

Of course briztoon's influence regarding Brisbane picks is always a factor as well :p

If Gold coast score Hollands they are going to be adding some more serious talent to their squad
Hollands was one I was deciding whether I would give to Hawthorn or Gold Coast but in the end I think Phillips would work much better in a Hawks midfield and fills an immediate need (Competitive young midfielder with upside)

Really Gold Coast are in for an A+ draft no matter what they do. They're going to prelist Davies/Jeffrey + one of Lake/Pescud and I rate all of them extremely well, and their Pick 6 gives them the potential choices of anyone from DGB/Phillips/Hollands/Reid/Bruhn.

Just looking at who is missing, there’s not a lot of speed and/or height amongst the more obvious talents.

Bailey Laurie, Jake Bowey or Sam Berry. Or we’re looking at more speculative wingers such as Connor Stone or Fraser Rosman.

Brandon Walker would be an excellent choice, but Fremantle match straight away.

Ruckman are often targeted during trade time not Necessarily at draft time unless of course they’re the standout Ruckman like Grundy and Jackson Conole has said we are looking at outside speed and Small forward (Coleman) during he’s interview by Cal Twomey Road to the draft

Conole also mentioned we should look for a young ruck, potentially in this draft, last year.

But he basically mentioned every position in that podcast.

If we’re looking for outside speed, at our range, it looks like one of Winder, Stone or Rosman.

Winder has the most runs on the board, and is a freak athlete.

Stone is a little vanilla for me.

Rosman could be a boom or bust, high upside pick. And we don’t have his type on our list at the moment.

Spent the past few days working on my final draft board that I intend to release sometime today, and I'm in the process of working on a phantom draft I intend on posting the day before the draft.

It's been a different year for draft watching, but I'm pretty happy with all the work I've put in this year and the results I've seen from it. Thanks everyone who's followed along so far :thumbsu:

FINAL RANKINGS: December
And here they are, my final rankings for the year, well the final ones I'll be releasing publicly at least; I'm sure I'll be deciding whether or not Max Holmes belongs at 78 or 77 for the rest of the week :p

I decided to release my top 60, as I'm pretty confident in all 60 players and I think they're all great talents with the tools to make it at the top level

1. Logan McDonald (Tall Forward/Western Australia)
2. Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (Tall Forward/Vic Country) (Western Bulldogs NGA)
3. Denver Grainger-Barrss (Tall Defender/Western Australia)
4. Elijah Hollands (General Forward/Vic Country)

28. Isiah Winder (Small Forward/Western Australia)
29. Oliver Davis (Inside Midfielder/Tasmania)
30. Tom Powell (Inside Midfielder/South Australia)

34. Shannon Neale (Ruckman/Western Australia)
35. Sam Berry (Inside Midfielder/Vic Country)
36. Brodie Lake (Outside Midfielder/Northern Territory) (Gold Coast Academy)
37. Zavier Maher (Inside Midfielder/Vic Country)
38. Kaine Baldwin (Tall Forward/South Australia)
39. Connor Stone (General Forward/Vic Metro)
40. Kalin Lane (Ruckman/Western Australia)

41. Blake Coleman (Small Forward/Queensland) (Brisbane Academy)
42. Patrick Walker (Utility/Tasmania)
43. Connor Downie (Outside Midfielder/Vic Metro) (Hawks Academy)
44. Liam McMahon (Tall Forward/Vic Metro)
45. Jake Bowey (Outside Midfielder/Vic Metro)
46. Max Heath (Ruckman/Vic Metro)
47. Jack Ginnivan (Small Forward/Vic Country)
48. Fraser Rosman (Tall Forward/Vic Metro)
49. Cameron Fleeton (Tall Defender/Vic Country)
50. Zac Dumensy (General Defence/South Australia)

51. Cody Brand (Tall Defender/Vic Metro) (Essendon NGA)
52. Luke Pedlar (General Forward/South Austrralia)
53. Tom Highmore (Tall Defender/South Australia)
54. Carter Michael (Outside Midfielder/Queensland) (Brisbane Academy)
55. Sam Collins (General Defence/Tasmania)
56. Aiden Fyfe (Outside Midfielder/Tasmania) (Gold Coast Academy)
57. Liam Kolar (Tall Forward/Vic Metro)
58. James Borlase (Tall Defender/South Australia) (Adelaide NGA)
59. Seamus Mitchell (Small Forward/Vic Country)
60. Matt Allison (Tall Forward/Vic Metro)

A lot of "potential" picks in this top 60, with the likes of Cam Fleeton, Max Heath, Matt Allison, Liam Kolar and Seamus Mitchell all making the 60 despite limited viewing, but there are quite a few others outside the 60 that I think could be very good (Tyler Brockman, Josh Eyre, Max Holmes, Luke Cleary, Lachlan Carrigan).

I included Tom Highmore as the only mature ager in my top 60, but there are plenty more names that could potentially be picked (Daniel Fahey-Sparks, James Rowe, Alec Waterman, Mitch Duval).

The top 7 to me are a level above everyone else, Thilthorpe may be at number 7 but that in no way means he would be a bad pick for Adelaide at #1, he's still going to be very good

We're only 8 days away from the draft now, a lot can change between now and then but I'm pretty confident in my rankings. If you have any questions on players positions or players who didn't make it just ask below.

I intend on finishing and releasing my phantom draft on December 8th, so please look forward to that!

11. Callow
16. Western

No Maurice Rioli
Callow for me has been at 11 all year. His hands and athleticism are elite and I think he can really make it as the next big tall forward. He's a good size already, but he may need a year to adjust to the speed of AFL level (a stark difference from the TSL level he's been at all year)

Western has stepped up at every occasion. He was very good at the u17 all stars game last year, he was the best player in the losing side for Claremont in the WAFL Colts GF and BOG for the WA All Stars game. For me he just steps up at every level, and I think that he's not going to let his size get the better of him at AFL level. Combine that with his creativity and skill, I really see him becoming one of the better forward/mid's in years to come

I have quite a few small forwards above Rioli. I don't think he's better than any of the players in my top 60 and outside of my top 60 I think Tariek Newchurch, Tyler Brockman, Max Pescud and Charlie Lazzaro are much better small forwards. I'm sure he'll flourish in Richmond's system, but if I had the choice between Rioli and any of the players I mentioned above, I wouldn't be picking Rioli

Whilst i do agree he does have elite hands and is a good contested mark im not sure about his athleticism being elite, His speed and agility are ok but doesnt have a great leap and looks to rely too much on strength where at junior level he may get way with it but at AFL level with bigger stronger defenders and zone defense this wont be as easy. Disagree about Rioli whilst i dont see him as being a top pick i would be confident MRJ having more impact at AFL level compared to the 4 above mentioned.

But great effort :thumbsu:

Bastyy has sat on the fence re Callow to Fremantle. This is his last shot at redemption.
The Callow to Freo question was bound to come up wasn't it :p

For Swiggy's question, I would not be angry in the slightest if we took Callow at our first pick, I think he's an amazing young talent who could easily end up the 3rd or 4th best tall forward from this draft (McDonald and Ugle-Hagan are going to be elite, so I can't say that Callow will be a better player then both of them) BUT his draft range right now from most recruiters/the media in general is 2nd round +. Hell there's a chance he'll pop up around the 3rd or 4th round. So if we wanted him, I'd take our second most wanted player at our first pick that isn't going to be around in the second round, and then trade into the 25-30 range before a Walker bid and pick up Callow.

As Gav said, I've been on the fence for Callow to Fremantle and I've done some thinking about it over the past few weeks, and my initial stance was that he was too similar to Tabs when in reality we're probably trying to pick a tall forward to replace Hogans role of someone who can play as a high half forward. Looking back on that I think if he's at our 2nd pick, whether that be our current pick 32 OR a pick after the Walker/Western bids that is leftover, I would take him in a heartbeat. His hands are just too damn good and his ability as a player are too good to pass up and I think with a year or two of development he could slot in that forward line right when we're hitting our finals push in 2022/2023.

I've heard a few say that the Giants have an interest in Callow. If he does end up with us, I hope your assessment is correct. You are far more bullish on him than others.
Callow is by far the player I've watched the most of any player in this draft, and probably the player I've seen live the most since I've started draft watching. From everything I've seen at TSL level and in the Tassie Devils games/u17 future games I really do think he's going to break out at the top level. I think he'd fit in great at GWS. I love Jake Riccardi as a player (I had him at #48 on my rankings last year, the only reason I didn't have him higher is because I prefer placing 18 year olds above mature agers to showcase the younger talent) and he showed his talent this year in the games he played. Pair him up with one of Hogan/Finlayson/Himmelberg AND Callow and you've got a very strong forward line.

The Callow to Freo question was bound to come up wasn't it :p

Quite likely that you have seen Callow play live more than any other poster here, so your opinion is worth listening to.
