I continue to scratch my head at why we are ok to good in the short game yet absolute rubbish in the long form?

Is it field placements/playing conditions or is it mind set?

Yeah same goes with Elliots form. He is great in ODIs but in Pura cups he's been fairly average.

Look at the session by session summaries and in almost every losing game we have 2 or 3 sessions that we are very competitive or half get on top. Its just the rest of the game we are hopeless. IMO its a lot to do with mindset, in the 50 over game thats all they have to bowl and bat, 50 overs and it doesnt mean so much if you lose your wicket or bowl a 3 over bad spell.... when you go out for the Shield games a little bit more mental toughness has to be applied and the majority of the boys dont have that as yet.

Also, watch how most of the batsmen play. Just about all of them are front foot players. Older guys like Elliot and Diz, plus the real talented young guys like Ferg and Cozzie arent worried so much by the short stuff. Dan Harris is the worst for this. In the one-days you can sit on the front foot and know there wont be too much short stuff but of course in the other form you can bowl as much as you like. Generally grade wickets in Adelaide are pretty flat, youll get the odd nasty one but not a lot, some of the guy just havent quite adjusted...... well IMO anyway.

the SA Scorpions will be at it on #2 on Saturday and Sunday too against WA starting at 10am both days (hopefully)

Make sure you cheer the girls on too

they're having a more inconsistent season than the Redbacks

Wont be there unfortunately, I have a mates 21st/Xmas party and the Lobethal Pageant which is much closer for me and much much cheaper but ill be watching on TV for sure !!!

That's the million dollar question and I'm sure the Redbacks coaching staff are searching hard for an answer. I feel there are two key areas (one batting and one bowling) and both are borne out of the format of the game.

Bowling

When a batter is looking to score off you, you are always a chance to take wickets. In one day cricket the batters are on the look out for runs, play their shots, take risks and score quickly. Wickets will come if you put the ball in the right spots. However, in four day cricket the batter can 'sit' on your good balls, leave balls alone outside off stump, defend during your better spells, absorb pressure through dot balls/maiden overs etc.

In four day cricket the bowler has to make it happen. You have to create opportunities. Bowlers get exposed in four day cricket for a lack of penetration. Ian Harvey was a more effective one day bowler than a four day bowler. As was Peter Taylor. And Simon O'Donnell. I feel that with Harris and Cullen we have a couple that are effective in the one day form of the game but lack penetration in the longer format.

Batting

The key to batting is decision-making. Forward or back. Play or leave. Attack or defend. Run or stay. The best players make the correct decisions the most often. When you are playing badly you play at balls you should have left, go to drive balls that aren't quite there, get stuck on the crease when you should have played forward etc. Being faced with all these decisions in a split second leads to errors, second-guessing yourself, worrying about what you should be doing rather than relying on your instincts, paralysis of your natural game etc.

In one day cricket you have fewer decisions to make. You have to attack. You have to play at the ball. You know the majority of the time you will be on the front foot. And you have to run. Our batters play with a lot more freedom in the one day game. There is no confusion, no second-guessing, no question marks over shot selection etc.

So, in summary, I don't think we have the bowling depth/quality to take 20 wickets (especially when Tait isn't playing) in four day cricket and I don't think our batters 'know' their own game well enough to concentrate for long periods of time without making fatal errors in their decision making.

Qld are currently 5-71 after 20 overs after being 0-41 after 11

2 controversial decisions and one that could be argued on both sides.

1 a catch that looked to bump the ground and 2 the run out of Hopes after he had run into the bowler

I think Dan Harris got his fingers under it, he was very confident as was Elliott who was fielding close-by. Replays were unclear though.

Cosgrove has taken two very nice catches, the second was a pearler. I would play him on Boxing Day just for that effort.

Great performance in the field by the boys, held our catches and hit the stumps. Dan Harris showed why he is a very highly regarded fieldsman in domestic cricket. If only Dudcock could come good with the bat........ Now lets see us get the runs and move into 2nd spot on the table

If only Elliot had made 100! Great to see Cosi make no runs in his over to leave Elliot at the crease, then Elliot gets caught out on 94 :(

Why would you miss out on a double bonus point just to try and get a bloke to his century only for him to get out? Grrr!

Still, decent effort by the boys, I figured they'd find a way to screw it up somehow!

Did anyone see the agro between Kasper and Cosgrove, good fun to get stuck into the big Queenslander!

They could've got a bonus point?! Well that puts things into perspective...

They got one bonus point but they would have got another had they taken 6 runs off the over Cosgrove blocked out from Hopes ...

Dumb cricket that you get the uneasy feeling might come back to bite them:(
