They used to play the Melbourne Cup race over the PA system and if you were lucky a teacher might bring in a tv to watch it.

Yeah, they used to do that. I remember even during an inter-school sports carnival at Perry Lakes (remember that shit hole?) they paused it to broadcast the Cup when it happened. No one GAF.

I doubt the teachers would do that these days but they also don't get to hit you with a cane like they used to do back then either.
