The back pockets ruled the roost (ok, subbed into the middle) this week with three of the top five giving their opponents a belting. For good measure, a two full backs, a forward pocket and an interchange player were also "kissed on the dick" by the sim. Nonetheless, everyone has the same chance of being subbed or swapped and these were the lucky few this week. Looking a little further down the list, JackBero collected 21 disposals, nine tackles and six free kicks while keeping his opponents to just seven touches while Blaze Storm picked up 21 touches and seven marks while keeping his opponent to six touches.

TOTW representation was fairly even with the Bears, Gumbies and Dragons contributing three players each while Beutbrute joined the top of the nominations leaderboard with his fourth nomination of the season, including his third consecutive TOTW gig.

Another week, another back pocket player fellated by the sim as lanky_wes tops all players for the round after collecting 17 disposals and seven marks after starting in the back pocket. At the other end of the field, and at a different ground entirely, jmoo wan kicked a much more reasonable 3.5 from eight kicks, dominating his opponent from a forward pocket. He was joined in this week's Team of the Week by fellow Gumbies' forwards okeydoke7 and WaLkEr_ThE_StAr as the three piled on 11 goals against the hapless Roys. This season’s iteration of Baz Stats sought to determine who was the most effective player regardless of position by looking past accumulation stats and instead focusing on each matchup and how each player performed in that matchup. As the season progress, some significant flaws were exposed however over the course of a full season, I am happy that the results reflect the random nature of the sim, where everyone has an equal chance of being substituted or swapped.

Each players’ offensive performance was measured against S27 averages and standard deviations for that position and weighed against the defensive performance, which was also measured against S27 averages and standard deviations. The result produced a raw score that was normally distributed and I applied some coefficients to reflect scores players are more accustomed to seeing.

I would like to thank MWPP for her efforts in helping me catch up on data collection and collation in the middle rounds as I struggled to keep up with uni and family commitments. Her assistance was incredibly valuable in what turned out to be a significant project.

It’s safe to say that this season’s version of Baz Stats has missed the mark but I hope you’ve enjoyed reading along as much as I’ve enjoyed producing it. Thanks for following!

Consistency was the story of Ned_Flanders’ season and despite rarely putting up big numbers, he did his job week in, week out on his way to winning 12 of 16 matchups for the season. Ned rattled off four straight wins between rounds 2 and 5 and hit a purple patch in rounds 8 to 14 winning all seven matchups. He picked up two Team of the Week nominations, the final one catapulting him to the top of the pack in the back pocket.

Despite his inconsistency, his best was frequently better than his peers as he won seven contests and three TOTW nominations from 11 games at full back.

Another player who exemplifies ‘a tale of two seasons’, lanky_wes beat nine opponents and collected four Team of the Week nominations to earn the other back pocket spot in the Team of the Season. lanky_wes hit a purple patch between rounds 3 and 7 averaging 96 adjusted Dream Team points and collecting three of his TOTW nominations during this period. The next eight rounds were lean as he averaged just 35 ADT across the period before a strong finish saw him top all players in round 16.

Wacky Tiger (FUR) – Half Back Flank

Three games with an Adjusted Dream Team score of greater than 100 punctuated an inconsistent but productive season for the Furies’ half back flanker. Wacky Tiger won 11 contests throughout season 28 including six in a row between rounds 3 and 8. He was the only player in the top ten to concede more Dream Team points than he scored himself.

Oddhawk (MBD) – Centre Half Back

Coming in at number 10 is Mount Buller Demons full back, Oddhawk, who was a picture on consistency throughout season 28. He ranked #1 among centre half backs for kicks, marks, goals, and Dream Team points while conceding the fewest kicks, marks, handballs, free kicks, goals and Dream Team points of all centre half backs who played 16 games. He won 11 of his first 13 matchups peaking in rounds 5 to 12 scoring an ADT of 80 or above in six of eight matches over that stretch and collecting three TOTW nominations.

Test Tickle won each of his first six contests on the way to 12 contests won for the season and three TOTW nominations.

Mooch (ROY) – Full Forward

Sharing a Fred Medal with Its Manbearpig, the Roys’ spearhead booted 70 goals for the season but also topped all full forwards for kicks, marks, free kicks for and Dream Team points. Baz Stats isn’t about offensive stats though and Mooch’s performances at full forward were so dominant this season that he also conceded the fewest kicks, marks, handballs and Dream Team points of all players who played a minimum of 15 games at full forward. Mooch beat his opponent 10 times and earned four TOTW nominations.

A full forward’s job is to make the most of his opportunities when the ball comes his way. While Mooch arguably had a better offensive season than okey, okey was more dominant in front of the sticks conceding the fewest average marks, handballs and Dream Team points while averaging the second most number of kicks, goals and Dream Team points among all players who played a minimum of ten games at full forward. He was also the only player to play a minimum ten games at full forward to not be tackled. Okey won ten contests and earned four TOTW nominations for the season.
