Eddie McGuire and the Stars bid to take the BBL final to the MCG has failed. The Renegades have a contract which stipulates all home finals must be played at Marvel Stadium.

CA: ''As per the last seven seasons of the BBL, the highest-ranked team earns the right to host the final. On this occasion it is the Renegades, and we are looking forward to seeing a big Melbourne crowd to watch them take on the Melbourne Stars.”

Eddie McGuire: “Why would you have the MCG sitting empty for a Grand Final? If it’s raining, play it at Marvel — that way you get a game.“If it looks like it’s going to be a belter let’s play it down at the MCG, open the gates and apologise and thank everybody who has stuck with cricket over the summer. It’s been of a torrid time for cricket. Let’s relaunch with a fantastic game of cricket for the grand final.”

Look, I don't live in Melbourne and have limited intentions of going to a BBL game in any case but I'm happy with this. It's unfortunate for those who might miss out in the event of a full house at Marvel but the Renegades have earnt the right to a home final at their home ground, not a home final at their opponents home ground.

Are Eddie said, it’s been a poor season for cricket, attendances are tumbling and you turn away a record crowd.

Only league in Australia that plays a finals game at the smaller stadium. Every other league teams have to host finals at their opponents ground if that’s the better ground

If they're yet to pass the 40k ticket pre sale mark before midnight, it really will be a non issue as Marvel can cater to a walk up of 10-12k quite easily.

Something tells me the 20k fans that the MCG seems to magically keep in storage wouldn't even be interested in attending the final this season.

Marvel will be rocking, pitch is looking good. People and especially Ed (as always go **** yourself Ed) need to move on.

I’m not going because I don’t want GA and all the seats were gone after a couple of hours.

40k? That’s more than they’ll have on sale, a lot of seats are corporates and medallion club...

McGuire only cares about what makes Brand Eddie look good.

so their plan is to keep the BBL in same window as we have now, BUT it's right before the Women's T20 World Cup. We're going to be so burnt out on T20s, it's scary (although slightly amusing)

I seriously doubt burning out will be an issue. Not taking anything away, but bowling four overs a game, facing 4-5 overs as a batter, and standing in the field for an hour and a half would be one of the least taxing sports in the world. They'd spend more energy in a training session. If anything the players will carry momentum into the tournament and be mentally sharp which is a good thing. Normally teams head to world cups with barely many 50 or 20 over games leading to it.

Not the players, the fans!

**** Mr. Self Interest Eddie McGuire.

I guess I support the Renegades because there was no way I was supporting a team that involves/involved Eddie and Warne.

I'm also on the Gades bandwagon because I don't want the Stars fans to celebrate a win.

2nd biggest crowd for a BBL Final behind the MCG final 3 years ago

Could have broken the record but I doubt they’ll ever have another derby final
And that crowd could have also fit comfortably into Docklands.

I guess there were enough Stars supporters that realised that their team undeservedly snuck into finals and were just making up the numbers.

Maybe in future years the Stars might finish top two and earn a home final or two. Getting rid of Eddie might be a step towards future success.

But it was a great final, didn't particularly care who won. Bring on the footy (not AFLX).

Good Geoff Lemon in the Graund.

He nails it here in my humble.
The last Cricket Australia rights deal – passing up the chance to make Ten a free one-stop home of all cricket in favour of sequestering a chunk of the game for a pay network – may yet prove to be the single greatest failing of a group of doomed administrators who signed the paperwork after the sandpaper scandal but before it had rightly cost them their jobs.

Good article and good suggestions about more structured fixtures and local broadcasts

The moving of home games makes it harder, it some of those gaps between home games were ridiculous whilst Perth and Adelaide had a very consistent run of home games.

Also interesting that Perth viewership is so much higher for home games than away games

Not really given how TV ratings are calculated and the time that the majority of their away games being played.

A 7:40pm start in Hobart, Melbourne or Sydney (more than half the comp) means a 4:40pm start in Perth, when most people are still at work if it is a week day, which would mean that the game is pretty much over by the time people get home from work and have made dinner etc. I also assume that the games at these times are on a secondary channel, because Ch 7 doesn't move the news.

Just read that article and came here to post it, interesting stuff and some of it challenging my perceptions but made the arguments quite well backed up with data.

I do feel though it is unnecessary to run the BBL right through to the third week of February. The return to school in the first week of Feb seems to be the ideal point for the season to culminate in the finals. Keeping the thought process simple for the fan is important ie. if it's a school holiday => BBL match(es) on tonight. Once you start with the isolated weekend only games in those couple of weeks in February, the brand is diminished somewhat.
