I wonder how much higher the salary cap would need to be to actually attract more than a handful of decent international cricketers, instead of getting a bunch of "T20 specialists" from other countries that basically just play in various domestic leagues around the world?

So Cricket Australia has sacrificed the Shield in the pusuit of BBL $ are now finding the public starting to switch off. They are absolute idiots. Any fool could see that sticking half the games behind a paywall breaks up the flow of the competition. People just float off.

No point increasing the International cap if you are only attracting players like Harry Gurney (no disrespect to him, but people aren't rushing off to the BBL to watch Harry Gurney).

They need to organise the BBL in a calendar block where
  1. Australia's best players can play
  2. There are fewer International tours going on, so better talent is available (not sure if this is possible, November through February is pretty busy)

The BPL would have to be having an impact. When you've got them, us and NZ having their T20 comps all going simultaneously, as well as a busy international schedule, the talent pool thins out. There seems to be a lot more grade cricket battlers getting games these days.

Maybe shorten it and align it so that it doesn't entirely clash with the NZ comp - that way you might get guys like Sodhi and Corey Anderson available.

Two big mistakes were made.
1) Increasing the amount of games. People are now fatigued and over it. No one has the time to follow it now everyone is back at work/school etc.
2) Moving games behind the paywall. I know you have to pay for sport everywhere but Australians effing hate it.
Unfortunately players want more and more and more money and they need to do the above to make tv rights more valuable to pay the players. This has long term effects on the sport.
Other issue is with 8 teams, the talent is diluted. Look at some of the players playing like Evan Gulbis, Nathan McAndrew, Sam Rainbird, Jono Edwards, Cameron Valente etc etc all of whom are not superstars by any stretch of the imagination and mediocre cricketers at t20 level.
And some of the overseas "marquee players" are anything but.
Liam Plunkett? Anton Devcich? Harry Gurney? Yeah that will put butts on seats.

The BPL playing simultaneously is definitely an issue for the bbl, an increase in the cap may have an impact on moving some of those internationals here. But not much when you realise the money will be spread.

With the increased season I thought Foxtel would have a role. The problem is they made Saturday exclusive to Foxtel, rather than using Foxtel to churn through the games quicker. The night test really screwed things up too. Should have kept playing BBL through it, at least day 4 and day 5 over the long weekend as with the pink ball it was never going the journey. Could have had two matches Sunday and two Monday.

the fact the BPL is even remotely competitive with us is a complete joke. Half their teams were borderline bankrupt.

The problem is most likely that CA and the BBL guys have got about 30 executives on 500k a year doing strategy and other such BS.

I've seen a few BPL games over the years and am yet to see someone in the crowd, maybe I'm watching the wrong games. If that is considered more enticing, then something is seriously wrong.

Isn’t our t20 the 2nd most attended after the IPL? It’s staggering that we have reached a point of crowds averaging over 20,000 is considered a failure, especially as a tiny portion of it is played during the holiday season and most matches are played on weeknights.

Scheduling needs to get better, and the averages have been hurt with games being played in moe or Melbourne stars hosting Sydney thunder on the Gold Coast, that’s nonsense.

They would be better off starting it earlier, the bbl should finish last weekend of January.

it doesn't make alot of sense why we can't offer the big name players more money than the others. BBL must be operating on massive overheads its the only thing that makes sense.

It's all the lazy players going over there. Probably not keen on team meetings and the longer season here. Too much structure.
I guess some of the best T20 players (such as Evin Lewis and Alex Hales), plus all time greats like AB de Villiers are lazy then

it would really just be more than the BPL since the Gayles/ABs of the world just go where the money is.

There isn't that many international cricketers who are better at T20 than the guys currently playing in the BPL.

I was more thinking of your Pollard, Afridi, Perera types than AB. Where do they get their money from? Indian tv?

well Pollard has played here in the past so i'm guessing it was just a financial decision.

good question where BPL get their money from. Your probably right it would be from Indian TV. But i doubt the contract is anywhere near what BBL gets from 9/Foxtel.

A couple of things with the BPL

1. Their TV deal in Bangladesh alone is worth US$82 million/season. They may be a developing country but they are still a country of 130 million people. There's going to be some money there. Sponsorship of the tournament is apparently about US$50 million.

2. The salary cap (for each player) for the BPL draft is $200k but a lot of the big names negotiate deals outside the draft (I dont know how) so you'd think they are on more than that.

3. The BPL normally doesn't clash with the BBL as its usually held in Oct-Nov but they had to move it this year because of the Bangladeshi elections.

What was cricket Australia’s spin on it being moved and what was the real reason it was moved

Who knows, something to do with the condition of the outfield. Both teams are out of the race for finals so they could've played it on another ground up there and literally no one would care. Will be interesting to see the crowd for it considering it moved very last minute and it's likely to be at a crap time and everyone will be over it considering it's a dead rubber.

It'll sound soft, but perhaps weather?

Alice is scheduled for high 30s and 35-40km/hr winds all across the next week, which could make a potentially dodgy outfield into a complete dustbowl, while Adelaide is scheduled for high 20s/low 30s, and less wind, and (importantly for Adelaide) no rain over the next 7 days.

The IPL gets moved for elections too. They must go hard over on the subcontinent. There was a bit of violence with the Indian ones a while back so is it just prevention or does it still kick off and it just doesn't make the news here anymore.
