It was a pretty obvious wide watching it on tv but for the non striker it would be hard to know if it was a wide or not.

Not much point scrambling a single when you need 2 for a draw and 3 for a win though.

only explanation is if the striker hits it to the outfield running earlier makes it easier to come back for the second. If the striker ran immediately he might have made it as well.
