Given how Marsh bowled last Sunday - we might risk him as out 5th bowler - good to see him back above 140ks

However my concern would be our top 3 all like to spend balls getting their eye in and don't risk their wicket in the power plays which leaves a lot of heavy lifting at the back end.
Hasn't been much of a problem over the past 3 seasons...

Pretty indepth article on the Perth Scorchers by Brettig and Kimber from Cricinfo. Some interesting points regarding the nature of squad building.

Good read.

It will be interesting when the Scorchers have less injuries. Sounds as though many will be too scared to leave.
You might also suggest it may be detrimental to their long term cricket careers to leave WA. Hell if NCN is still being paid bulk dollars in the IPL to basically be injured then why move out of a good "year long" system?

This is very very interesting. I'm intrigued to see how some posters from WA react to the salary cap manipulation (for lack of a better word) and whether it is the same as how they reacted to COLA.
It was a bunch of accusations and innuendo, complete with official denial of them.

We've generally had 4/5 A grade bowlers

At the moment we have 1 and, 2 promising youngsters and a guy still coming back to his best

and then a dodgy import.

In six BBL seasons so far four winners have been from single-team cities.

Three of those were the Scorchers. So really, we've had two single-teams have success and two non-single teams have success.

Really if it was as simple as bundling and threats, you'd expect a lot more success from the other single-teams than has actually been the case. Runners-up: Scorchers, Scorchers (god that was tough), Hurricanes, Sixers, Stars, Sixers. Again an even split.

I think team composition has a lot to do with it. The Sydney and Melbourne teams in particular often pay big money for big names (usually internationals but the Sixers seem to prefer Australia players). Meanwhile the Scorchers typically pick someone much, much more anonymous but with a solid T20 record. The only exception is the year they signed Gayle, who did pretty much nothing, and he didn't come back. This is also probably the Tao of Langer.

Even though the article itself points out that a) the evidence is circumstantial, b) it doesn't break any rules and c) it's at best a minor explanation for players staying and the Scorchers winning?

Twas an interesting article... but there is zero evidence in there other than innuendo and whinging from other officials.

The "smoking gun" is Tye getting $15k over an above the minimum state contract. $15k...

We have bought BBL titles for $15k.

And if bundling is so prevalent - explain why the hurricanes/heat and strikers haven't also been dominating.

Of the 12 finallists so far, 5 have been scorchers, 3 have been sixers and the rest are one offs.

So aside from the scorchers - no other 1 team town has made the final more than once...

And in fact the only team not to make a final is a one team town.

But but ... Matt Kelly

There would be players of Matt Kelly's calibre in every grade comp. Maybe go for cheap grade bargains like Kelly (or Tye and Simmons) rather than spending more importing from interstate?

Renegades and Strikers have never made a final but that will soon change for one of them.

One thing I would like to know, would someone like Shaun Marsh be on a per game contract or would he have a base contract? A bloke in and out of the Australian team, not like the Scorchers would know if he will be available to them even 2 months before the BBL season.

WA had Gayle but not scorchers.

Great read - thanks for that - some interesting insights.

It sounds like JL runs a ‘you are either with us or against us’ set up in WA - very much using the Scorchers as just one part of the bigger picture.

CA have painted themselves into a corner with the contract stuff though - ‘discouraged’ but not against the rules?...really? that’s what they’ve got?

Victoria and NSW can cry a river - both those states probably need to look again at their own set ups for starters and both were obviously willing to roll the dice financially when it came to running two teams and take the chance to earn more money by doing so.

Sydney and Melbourne teams have also historically proven a much more likely to attract high profile (high quality?) imports to their sides - and have managed to pay for and secure Scorchers players such as Hussey and Hogg - long time team mates of ‘Herr Langer’, who’s departures weakened the Scorchers list at the time.

Both Sydney sides have also won the BBL.

You can't really stop bundling, I'm pretty sure it came up as an issue when Hughes left NSW and joined SA/the Strikers, although I suppose CA could refuse to accept a contract that is clearly unders, as I believe the NRL does with players who are state of origin reps, but anyway that's really the side issue to the main revelation in that piece. If Tye and Short were pressured and made to feel they may be jeopardizing their WA careers by possibly taking offers outside of Perth then that's pretty ordinary. Funnily enough, it reminded me of someone's unnecessarily comments following Marcus Harris and Brad Hogg's departures....

I don’t really think NSW or Victoria had much say in 1 or 2 teams...

Obviously the 2 teams would make it petty toughdonr think to bundle contracts

As for why don’t other 1 team states have success? Strikers should but keep choking, Heat have won 1 but QLD isn’t that strong these days and Tassie don’t have the players

As for players leaving Perth, I don’t think there is any players who were current WA regulars who have gone elsewhere whilst playing with WA. Main ones seem to be retirees and players who move states for more opportunity like Stoinis and Harris

I think it’s a testiment to JL leadership WA’s depth and ability to develop players shows in the state side I mean for bowlers alone you have
Berndoff
NCN
Paris
Rhichardson
Tye
Green
Kelly
Mitch Marsh
Moody
Mackin
That’s 10 FC quality quicks on the list

And then batsmen
Smarsh
Bancroft
Voges
Klinger
MMarsh
Stoinis
Short
Cartwright
Whiteman
Turner
Agar (stretching it a bit)
11 pretty good batsmen

I would agrue that the following players are good enough to represent Australia at some point circumstances permitting and including current internationals
MMarsh, Smarsh, Whiteman, Cartwright, Stoinis, Agar, NCN, Berndoff, Bancroft, Rhichardson, Green and Turner.

That’s serious FC depth

Not ideal that tonights game is 4.40 on a Thursday for the locals, thats really awkward for the majority of people working

Should still get plenty in

Guess thats just the deal of living in WA
