I will just quote something I posted in 2012.

*************
He should be playing as a mobile CHF - before Riewoldt came along, I thought he should be left all alone inside the forward 50. As a one-on-one target he'd be hard to beat.
He has excellent skills - marking, kicking - but everyone gets excited about the fact he can 'run fast'.

I'm serious - his best-ever game was against Melbourne one day where he played up forward for the 2nd half and kicked 4 goals (and missed one from the goalsquare - channeling Richo). But that is the only time I have seen him be a match-winner - as distinct from BOG where he just gets the most stats.

****************************

And plenty of others were saying the same.

Just as long as he has a generous amount of time in the midfield while his legs are still fresh enough, he's still too good through the centre to be a permanent forward. A lot of his damaging play comes from carrying the footy from defensive to forward 50, would be a shame not to see that anymore.

Dat hair tho

Dat hair tho

At the end of the day, that's the most important factor.

As soon as he gets his short back and sides hairstyle back with the sick fade he plays an amazing game and frees up our other elite mids/forwards.

It's also our first credible win for the season and first win against Collingwood since 2007 when Brett booted 5.

Coincidence? 100% not, it's just logic that his hair wins matches and that can't be disputed.

Imo i dont think we would have won against either Collingwood or Port if he was still out. Just one player and it becomes a big problem.
It sort of reflects the gap between our few better players and the next tier. Depth is a huge issue for us and i hope we dont lose sight of this issue just because we are winning.

On Brett we dont appreciate just how good this bloke is, neither does the rest of the footy world imo.

Funny, in 3 years since I'd say you were probably still right. IMO he is a good midfielder, but not an elite one. He may well be an elite forward though who can rotate through the middle.

The part that really tickles my fancy is even before the ball is bounced, we have a potential mismatch. Those who can go with him in the air will struggle to have him for pace, or once it hits the ground. Gives us a total other dimension going forward.

Very important. I actually didn't appreciate how important he has been to Richmond for the last few years until this year. We may not have lost the Bulldogs and Melbourne games had he played in them too.

Think that his estimation in the eyes of most - both those who support us and those who don't - will go up considerably once he retires. It's a shame. Signed a 5-year deal with us when many 'pundits' on this board suggest we trade him out due to his lack of heart (these pundits continued with this mantra well after he signed this contract, as well.) He's a tiger through and through, a rare commodity in the changing landscape of AFL football and still in our three most important players. Cheers to him

He'd taken games by the scruff of the neck and been best on ground many times even before that and many times after that, even before 2012.

If you got a list of his top 10 best performances where he stood out the most, they'd be the matches where he played as a midfielder.

I'll give you a bit of slack because between 2009-2012 everyone just had a weird attitude towards Deledio. all those trade discussions and complaints about him not reaching his potential, despite him playing amazing all except the first 1/3 of the 2009 season.

If he keeps playing HF like he has the past 20-25 games he will become a legit top 15 player in the comp, is a bloody gun playing that floating/high HF role, nigh on unstoppable and funny thing is he gets the same amount of numbers as he did playing midfield or down back - just a lot more damaging now

Is by far the most underrated player in the comp. I've said it a million times, his ability to perfectly execute a handball or kick when in the midst of 2, 3, 4 opposition players and get us going is astonishing.

Skillful- Yep
Strong- Yep
Fast- Yep
Smart- Yep
Clutch- Yep
Leader- Yep
Loyal- Yep

I pray that he doesn't have too many more injuries and as he gets older he can sit in the goal square and kick bags week in, week out.

Worst #1 draft pick ever.

Should trade to GWS.

He is lazy, never tackles or gets physical and he will never reach his potential.

Has always just been a pay cheque player.

No idea how anybody could like him or his shit haircut.

Hehe, see what I did there?

Love that yesterday when we were struggling he goes into the backline for 5-10 minutes.

Best position for him is forward line with occasional bursts out. Means by the time the opposition realise he is in the midfield or HBF he is back in the forward line and roamed free without a tag.

I've been saying it for years but his hands in tight situations are the best I've seen. A grossly underrated component of his game.

I don't think I've ever seen him get tackled with the ball pinned, he always gets a handball out and his elite vision means it invariably goes to a tiger. Will always be a hugely underrated footballer.

That handball last week in between 3 pies players was gold.

I'll never understand why opposition supporters and h media and even some of our own here don't rate him stupidly highly. Is it because he plays for Richmond.

Love the bloke...an outstanding footballer and tiger.

The only running tiger worth a tag from 2005 until Cotch developed. Played his role in Cotch's development as well.

Whenever I watch him sprinting to a contest, (or away from one with ball in hand) I pray to God the calf & the achilles hold on....
Losing what little hair I have left worrying about him getting injured. :(
