Did anyone see the Beach Boys show last night at the Palais? Can't believe that Mike Love still tours the world with a bunch of nobodies pretending to be the Beach Boys.

For mine the Beach Boys was and willl always be the THREE Wilson brothers Brian Carl and Dennis, Love, Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston.

Still interested though on what people thought of last nights performance?

me and the darl went, have always liked the beach boys. didn't see any of christopher cross, went in towards the end of daddy cool.
thought the beach boys were great, we were in row hh and the crowd was all up and out of there seats. mike loves voice still sounds the same and the "nobodies" sounded as close to the real thing as anyone. they sang some mamas and papas and jan and dean which i thought was weird because they have more than enough in their catalogue to fill up the night. the highlight for me was "god only knows" which was dedicated to carl wilson. not a bad night out:thumbsu:

If Brian was there they might have had some right to call themselves the Beach Boys. But without all the surviving members still in the band, it's just an imitation, albeit a very good one.

I heard there was a tour earlier this year with a 50s band The Platters - there's been dozens of members since they first formed, and this particular incarnation that toured was based around one member who joined in the 70s.

brian doesn't get out much anymore, have you seen any documentaries on him recently? he was screwed up and over by eugene landy for 15 years.
mike love was the lead singer on most of the beach boy tracks anyway so with him coming out, and my shortsightedness, i couldn't really see the faces of the other band members.
last time they came out i saw them at olympic park back in 89' and john stamos was on drums

Yeah he's a pretty fragile character these days after a tough life. But I seem to remember he came out here 2-3 years ago and performed Pet Sounds live, a rare appearance from the great man.

pretty sure he was at the arts centre, spewing i didn't see that. i reckon it was for the unreleased "Smile" album though, not pet sounds.

He played the Pet Sounds tour at the Arts Centre & then a couple of years later played at the Regent Theatre on the "Smile" tour. His Pet Sounds concert at the Arts Centre was a little bit rusty, but the "Smile" concert was outstanding.

FWIW, Brian Wilson was the lead vocalist on many of the Beach Boys' classiest songs like Surfer Girl, In My Room, Surfs Up etc. In fact virtually all the Beach Boys' finest ballads, except for God Only Knows, featured the sensational voice of Brian Wilson.

Went down to the gig in Adelaide last night.
Me and my brother got the tickets as a father day present for my old man.
All three acts were really good. I was a bit skeptical going in and wasnt sure whether they would hit those same harmonies as they did back in the day but the so called "nobodies" did a very very good job IMO. Played all there classics, everyone got up to boogier the old man enjoyed his present so couldnt really ask anymore.

Anyone else who has seen them on this tour, what did you think of the California dreaming cover they played?
I dug it

This was one of the last bands to tour here who were convinced that Australians would accept sub-standard concerts. In the 70s they toured, and everyone in the band was either pissed or stoned. What was worse, they sang their exquisite harmonies hopelessly off-key, throughout the whole concert.

Never respected the band since. The lot of them are very unprofessional perpetrators of fraud.

I have DVD of the 76 tour when they played at the Sidney Myer music bowl in Melbourne. The poster above was right on the money. All three wilson brothers were off their tree. Surprisngly, Dennis was the most coherent whilst Carl was by far the worst.

I wouldn't call them frauds though, anyone who knows a little about the Beach Boys knows that all three brother were subjected to a shocking upbringing curtesy of their $crewed up father who put them through hell. This was a very dark period for all three as they struggled with heroin, other drugs and other personal issues. To get a true indication of what the orginal band was really like, check out the Beach Boys live at Knebworth -1980.

This was the last time all three Wilson brothers and the entire original band played together outside of the US. Brian Wilson is still in his pre- therapy phase and still well below his best but Carl and Dennis Wilson really turn it on. The closing song "Fun Fun Fun" goes absolutely off and my hairs stand up every time I watch it. This to me was the true Beach Boys...

Well, went to see the Beach Boys and the MSO at the Arts Centre last saturday night and again it wasn't a bad night, not sure if it was worth the 2 x $159 tickets though.
this time the originals were mike love and bruce johnston.
they again played all their hits and encored with kokomo. the concert went for around 2 1/2 hours and the highlight this time was probably kokomo or surfin usa.
not sure if i'll see them next time they're out, 3 times in 20 years is probably enough for me. still have them on a lot of the time though in the car which will do me fine.

Bruce Johnston is in the lineup as well.

Of the remaining living principal members, Brian hasn't been a regular touring member for a long, long time and Al Jardine I think has toured separately with his own band performing Beach Boys tunes (not using the Beach Boys name though, that is owned by Love I think).

Bear in mind with bands of that vintage (or even more recent ones) more often than not the lineups are diluted of original members. The Who will be performing this weekend at the Superbowl, with only Daltrey and Townshend as original members (Moon and Entwistle have passed on). The Hollies still record and tour and only have two long-term members left (Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott), and with a different lead singer (Allan Clarke retired years ago). Of the Sweet's best remembered lineup (Connolly/Priest/Tucker/Scott) only two are still alive - Steve Priest and Andy Scott - and each tours with his own version of the group. That's just a few examples I can think of off the top of my head.

There would be few long term bands with the majority of the original lineup still in place I would imagine.

Up there with my favourite Beach Boys' songs. The harmonies are awesome. :thumbsu:

i have seen a few Beach Boy docos and 2 things are pretty obvious

- Mike Love is a wanker

- The tension between him and Brian is pretty thick and they wouldnt tour together

however its unfair when old bands with dead members or those who choose to leave get negative press for continuing to make music and tour as its always forgotten that its these peoples jobs.
