So you would describe addictions as not a replacement for other demons or an escape from a reality that people often struggle to cope with and more an excuse to be self destructive for ones own personal gain?
I think that your response, albeit almost completely impenetrable, may support my observation.

I've listened to a few of Allan Christensen's podcasts and his path to gambling addiction was simply growing up around gambling and it being such a normal thing that even when still at school he and his mates were already gambling.and over time it grew into just what he did.
There was no mental health problem that instigated it, but it became a major problem.

Gotta figure that's common pathway to many addictions.

Some people start taking drugs/smoking/drinking to escape but there are also people who start just cause it seems like fun/cool/everybody else is. P

Self indulgence is a by product of addiction, the addiction itself is the mental coping mechanism that triggers things like pleasure in the brain, escapism and a feeling of control. To claim that players are using mental health as an excuse for their behaviors of addiction is to completely reject addiction as any form of medical scenario.

Im not disagreeing that some people can and will use it to their advantage to ellict sympathy and mask their own activities but to generalize all cases, or even a large percentage of them as that is extremely dangerous.

You have it back to front. Addiction is a by-product of self-indulgence.

Why is it "extremely dangerous" to mention this self-evident fact?

Your comment is just a mix of buzz words/jargon indicative of the increasing tendency to avoid personal responsibility and to play the psychological get-out-of-jail card.

PS Your terminology/jargon indicates that you may be a psych student [or social worker]. If so, good luck with your studies.

Addiction is an escape tool. Its a way to forgot your problems because you can funnel all your efforts into it. Drugs, gambling, video games, all these things can become addictive because they give you three things: 1) Pleasure, 2) A feeling of control and 3) Purpose.

Self indulgence is what people see when other people delve into these things. "Oh, hes just self indulging himself in his habits".

When you see a Footballer gambling you think hes just self indulging himself with his money. In reality, gambling is a way for them to try and cope with the pressures of their jobs: Perform well on the field or you dont get paid. Pretty simple. Its like selling cars, dont sell enough this month? Say cya to your commission income.

You also note living in the UK the strong correlation between communities hit hardest by the triple punch of Thatcherism, neoliberalism, and austerity that they're the ones with the high street line up of gambling shop-pawnbroker-gambling shop-we buy gold-gambling shop-payday loans-gambling shop-gambling shop-pawnbroker-gambling shop. The gambling industry is constituted of literal vampires. Supported, naturally, by their Renfields in parliament.
