News Beams steps down as Captain

He's always struck me as an atypical football captain... far more at home creating relationships with the players off the field in a genuinely honest and open way than presenting himself to gain publicity and notoriety as some tend to. Despite appearances and fanfare, it's easy to see there was a depth to his leadership that went beyond the on field captaincy stuff.

As a life role model our young guys are lucky to have him around. When your peers and mentor show how you to be vulernable and yet incredibly brave and courageous it's a lesson you remember.

Thank you for your dedication and leadership Dayne. I hope you and Claye get all the support you need and find strength in the gratitude we as supporters have for you both on and off the field. We're lucky to have you at the club no matter what capacity it's in.

Did anyone notice them show Luke Power highlights for the Beams segment on The Project? Massive WTF.

Agree. There’s no logical other choice but he’s a bit of a risk. A bit rough around the edges a la Rockliff. As Noble said it is fortunate that Hodge is around.

I think Zorko's rough edges are in rather different spots. The rest of the structure is vital too. If you're uncomfortable with something I think you're happier talking with Beams or Fagan about it than with their predecessors and absolutely confident that it'll be taken seriously even if you don't know them so well quite yet.

Just watched the interview. Brought some tears to my eyes cause it reminded me of how I was when my father died. He died from suicide but watching Dayne say “I’ve got professional help, family is first” wish I took that advice, instead of being stupid, drinking, denying it happened and pushing away family and friends.

I eventually did get help but I should of done it at the start.

Good on you beama. Obviously made the best choice! Chin up champion

Totally understand where you are coming from. The world is a different place largely thanks to men like Dayne who are widely respected, considered as tough ‘real men’ (whatever that means) and are prepared to honestly and openly share their experiences with the general public.

He says he has stepped down from the leadership role but to my mind what he has announced is actually real leadership. I’m sure every player will be better off handling their own life crap times thanks to these actions of Dayne. And many fans as well.

I'm having a down day and indulgently watching all the posted lions videos.

The post game interviews with Christensen , Zorko and Beams aretelling in hindsight. The first two are trying to contain their excitement and smiles enough to comolete the interviews but Beams doesn't even crack a grin. Good interview, but obviously completely flat.

As much as he is needed on field (very significant in our win) I have no problem if he takes a few weeks off if he feels he needs it.

From the interview yesterday he is still enjoying the games and his performance would indicate this. Getting out on the field and immersing himself in the zone of the contest would be a temporary escape from his grief.

So brave of him to openly say he is seeking professional help and is encouraging others dealing with their own issues to do the same. As he said, there is a stigma around seeking help when struggling and for someone of his calibre to be so upfront about it is truly inspiring.

In the States it seems everyone is in therapy and there is zero stigma attached to it. Here is the complete opposite - it's the tough guy she'll be right mate attitude mixed in with our UK stiff upper lip heritage.

There's still significant stigma in the professional sporting leagues. It's only very recently, i.e. in the last year, that it's started to be more publicized and accepted in that realm. Several NBA players have opened up about for instance.

Was it with the out of the locker roommate group?? I know there is at least one player who has done something with them.

I vaguely remember something about this but Rich comes to mind. Whoever it was was doing some Psychology subjects.

Not sure. Just a vague recollection about a player interested in it which was probably from an article or video posted here. Thought it was Claye. I could well be wrong.

Don't want to buy into speculation but my first thought when the announcement was made, is what Browne has reported would be entirely possible. Handing over captaincy, contract about to finish, won't be part of our next tilt and Brother unlikely to be on the list next year. If it is the case his Wife his desperate to get her young family closer to her parents and family (which can often be the case with Melbourneites) then I think this is well within the rhelms of possibility. Would suck totally and makes me sad thinking about it, but if it did happen, you couldn't really begrudge him and his family for making that move.

If it doesen't happen, which is more than likely (I think he is a Brissy Boy at heart) then awesome, I hope he plays a final with Brisbane and all his hard work and commitment comes to fruition.

Surely this would have been considered when he last signed with us that his dad wasn't going to be around much longer.

Born in Victoria and grew up on the Gold Coast. Not sure if he has genuine ties to Brisbane.
