Beating the Roos...

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Nothing is ever certain, so who knows what can happen over the final 3 rounds of the season. I'd be more confident had we had at least one more win than what we do, but if we play with passion and put 4 quarters together, who knows what can happen.

Roos always seem to play well against us.

They were great today, and although we had a fantastic win yesterday I fear they still have our measure atm.

But if we kick straight then who knows.

Campbell (excellent goal sneak + lightning quick) and Thomas are both key match ups. Both capable of kicking multiple goals, and Thomas can also play through the midfield. Armfield is probably our best match up for Campbell, with his footspeed.

Another important match up will be Hale. We tend to struggle against the tall ruckmen resting forward (hence why I believe White was brought in yesterday) and Hale is as good as any in that regards. Setanta would have matched up well, but not to be. Add Petrie, Jones and Thompson (although I'd back Jamo to shut him out completely) and our defence could very well be stretched - Petrie and Hale in particular when down there, as I doubt that anyone other than Waite has the size to match it with them.

We have won 5 in a row now and you guys are playing well too.

Should be a great game. I think if Fevola kicks 8+ you win. Simple as that. I'm not sure we have the matchup for him.

I hate to say it, bit i could see us getting a good smacking by North. They're just so even across the park, and work and work and work.

Our kicking for goal is still disgraceful. Fisher's in particular is appalling, and not even VFL standard. If we played our very best footy and also kicked very well when shooting for goal we'd be a chance, but i can't see it happening unfortunately.

Don't wanna sound silly, but yesterday's game was pretty disappointing. 72 entries into the F50 for 18 goals is just rubbish.

Yeah but we've been good against Medhurst, Farmer and Motlop this year. In the case of Milne, I think we just played crap against St Kilda. Harvey is the danger man. Make no mistake, he is a superstar. We do a good job of controlling the corridor, but often we leave it open when we turn the ball over going forward. Guys like Harvey and Harding can cut us up in that area.

Still the key is the clearances. Luckily we don't have Macintosh to worry about but they'll still have the edge with Hale. We should have the better midfield at ground level. Personally I'll be disappointed if we lose this...

i heard laidley just say in his press conference a minute ago that he will be bringing mcintosh straight back in next week

Totally disagree.

We won't be smacked at all, Nth are very good at running and playing as a team, and for mine Carlton have been doing that all year, so it should be a very even contest and will be won by the team who tackles and clears the ball better...and for mine i see that being Carlton.

Carlton had an easy game this weekend, Nth had a hard fought win and Carlton will have one more day rest.

Our goal kicking each week is the same, we always kick as many goals as points, but actually most teams normally do. And yesterday i think PA rushed about 5 points as did Adelaide yesterday.

The positive which you seem to make a negative is that we had 72 insdie 50's, the positive in that is, we had the ball, we had the opportunity, and the biggest positive is that of those 72 inside 50's that we only went to Fev about 15 times!!!

Remember also that an insdie 50 is getting the ball over the 50 line just by 1cm....so many times when you clear the centre or bomb it long to a contest from the wing thats an inside 50. a better stat would be when we actually were controlling the flow of play and went forward, just how many of those hit targets and were effective.

42 scoring shots from 72 so called entries is pretty good for any AFL team.

Fisher is well above VFL standard, and its really annoying when people claim crap like this, just cause he had a bad game yesterday in front of the sticks, what about the stuff he did across HF and the wing and HB to set up goals and forward thrusts, nobody seems to mention that.

Playing forward is a lot more than just kicking goals.

Game will be a good one, close but IMO carlton will clear away late in the 3rd to win by 25, Fev to kick 7 and Gibbs to be BOG.

A very good post IMO BH.

I've got a couple of questions for those with good memories and wider knowledge:

1. How well has the great man CJ usually done vs. North?
I know he was with WCE but certain teams are better at restricting his influence (i.e from memory, he's never had a Brownlow vote against the Crows for example, correct me if I'm wrong).

2. How well does Fev usually do?
I think he's usually been able to kick bags against them but I'm unsure. Mind you though, he's never had a good record against the Bulldogs until that win recently

I seem to recall Fev kicking 8 or so against Burrito in a pre-season game in Qld I think.

I think other than a few smackings while you have been rebuilding our games in general have been pretty even.

I think it will be a pretty close game.

I think it will be as well. Carlton still have a fair bit to fight for, as does the Kangaroos.

He'll be very raw then. He'll still murder us in the ruck though, like every other team.

I don't think he will be fantastic in the ruck if he plays, given how much footy he has missed, but he needs the game time before the finals and it will release Petrie to go CHF or CHB.

Yeah, given we play the Cats again in round 21 I think the boys will know how important it is to get the 4 points this week as we will need to win 2 of the last 3 to be any hope for 4th spot.

Still, both sides have a lot of pressure. Blues want to make the finals bad after some lean years so I think there will be a lot of intensity from both sides. I think the start will be important to the outcome.

McIntosh and Simpson are certain starters this week.

I would have thought harvey might be too quick for Gibbs. Not saying that Gibbs wouldn't be able to keep him in check but Harvey burns pace, just have a look at what he did to Aker today. Gibbs did get beaten in the 1st quarter by Deledio in the richmond game, who ran Gibba off his feet, but then gibbs dominated the rest of the day, so it is an interesting one. It is very likely Gibbs will get the match-up early and then ratts will react depending on whats happening. Though apart from Army, i really dont know who would have the pace to go with Boomer.

Id give Army a role on either harvey or wells, simular to the Danyl Pierce role yesterday. Though i did notice wells played a lot across half back in the game against the dogs.

So if wells plays across HB:
Army - Boomer
Walker - Wells

If wells starts in the mid:
Gibbs - Boomer
Armfield - Wells

We can still get there with 2 wins. 3 will guarantee it.
...
* We MUST beat Brisbane and beat one of North or Hawthorn - minimum.
* Saints must lose 2 of Freo, Essendon and Dogs I think.
* Brisbane must lose to Sydney.
* Tigers must lose to Hawthorn.
If we play aggressive 4 quarter football as well as we did against Port but with better results kicking at goal we can beat the Roos and Brisbane.
Based on what we saw today in the tigers game against Adelaide their season may be over.
Based on Freo's last few games the Saints could possibly struggle against them.

Hope springs eternal!

true north are one of our bogeys, but then again who wasn't for the last 6 years.....times have changed and after todays win (albeit to port) the boys have a little sniff of what they are capable of...i have a inkling feeling about this one

....especially if pagan is whispering into laidley's ear...:p

hmmmm. quoting myself, i know...

still think we might just get there,,,BUT,,,if north played like they did on the weekend? ........WOW

Dude, a couple of things. First, I really hope we don't get smacked. The reason though that i can see it happening is that North are so consistent in their work rate and the pressure they apply to their opposition. If they get a run-on, they could crack our confidence.

Secondly, I said Fisher's kicking is below VFL standard. As for his overall contribution, I'm happy enough with him being in the side.

Port gave us so many opportunities to score that we could still win despite wasting a heap of them, but as we saw against Adelaide (and other sides this year), if our kicking for goal is no good when we play against teams where we might only have a slight advantage (or break even) in Forward 50 entries, we'll lose.

Our ability to convert an advantage in general play into goals has been below average for years, and it's still not good.

Everyone seems to be worried about this game... But people are forgetting C. Judd and B. Fevola are playing for us...

Have faith people... i hope we really beat the kangas as my outlaws all support them and my brother-in-law plays for them...

Game will be another tight battle... if we can stem the flow through the midfield and kick straighter along with smash them in clearances. will go along way in winning...

I'm already pumped for this weekend....
