Beep.. beep.. beep..

Could have just bumped a similar thread from the past five years. How many goals did Truck concede last year? How many did J Riewoldt and Hawkins kick on him?
3 in the first quarter for Riewoldt before Talia was switched to him at quarter time. Subbed off at half time against Geelong after Hawkins kicked a few at Kardinia. Hawkins was scoreless in the AAMI match where we steamrolled them.

I don't get why there's some sort of board revolt when any criticism is levelled at Truck? He has been and is a very good player for the Adelaide Footy Club but he's not immortal.

Rutten is still good enough to take most teams' second forward comfortably - Lisle, Kreuzer, Lynch, Bradley/Clarke, Day/Dixon, Patton, Tarrant etc. barring a few like Roughead and a fit Gumbleton. However he seems to be given credit for a few of Talia's 2012 scalps which twistedly is like robbing Peter to pay Paul when judging our defence.

Truck is still a rock. Always knows where to be. Directs traffic down back better than anyone. Stronger than most. And this year has at least had a pre-season. Looks slower than he actually is. Strong in the marking packs. Blocks forwards better than anyone in the competition. Is almost immovable when he stands side by side in a marking contest. Is surprisingly good at ground level and has fantastic hands and a reliable kick. I'm looking for an even better 2013, and according to Rowey...has been towelling up Tex at training. I think truck will know when age has caught up with him.

What's this 'beep beep' bullshit?

HOOOOOOOOOONK! HOOOOOOOOOOONK!

You forgot about the fact he is basically a "get out of jail free card" when we have kick-outs. If all else fails, dob it to Truck and rest assured he will outmark his opponent and dish off to a running player.

Doughty gone 2012
Johncock gone 2013
Rutten 2014

Losing a bit of experience down back.
That looks like a reasonable timetable to me.

Yes, we'll be losing a bit of experience, but by staggering it that way we'll be able to minimise the damage - the complete opposite of 2010 when we lost Goodwin, Edwards & McLeod all at the same time.

I think he can last the year, but I don't believe he is our 'No. 1 defender'. He can't stay with the J Riewoldts or Hawkins' of the world any longer, so I think Talia deserves the mantle.

And he didn't really have a great prelim, he gave away eight scoring shots to his direct opponent with several simple scoring opportunities being fluffed.

His performance in the Semi is exactly what we needed though, and meant Freo never had a chance to stay in the game.

He also wasn't helped with some very poor kicking after a bad decision to kick across the goals a couple of times (I'm looking at you Bernie!)

Every year we get the Truck is finished thread. Every year he keeps racking up scalps

I love the fella and its good to hear he's knocked off a couple of kilo's

Every defender has goals kicked on them at some stage, even the very good ones. If Rutten can equal what he did last year he has done his job and plays on in 2014. If he doesn't, I reckon Truck is the type of guy who will call time. Sando hinted the other day he had a year or two left.

But some tend to scrutinise Truck too much. He doesn't have to be All Australian to justify his position. He'd walk into most teams defences.

EFA :thumbsu:

Truck will be fine. He was colossal in the latter part of the year and in the finals I though. Extremely underrated, 1 vs 1 he is a beast. We need him back there, as good as Talia is, he still doesn't have the presence down there as Truck.

Truck sacrificed his game hugely for the benefit of Talia's development.

Listen to how Talia talks about him - he's a massive presence down there.

He was excellent last year, and will be for another year or two; but don't be surprised if he starts getting the second best forward.

The bolded bit is key. Truck is an absolute gun and is playing a key role in making another absolute gun defender for us.

Excellent last year I'll question - his first half the season was VERY impacted by his lack of pre-season and the injury issue itself. Still very serviceable and a key leader down back. 2nd half of season was very very good.

It's too simplistic to say that Truck will be the same awesome player he has been in the past simply by virtue of having a full pre-season under his belt.

The fact that he's actively dropped out of the leadership to concentrate on his footy, coupled with a significant focus on changing his training and conditioning regime, says to me that he (and/or the club) have recognised a few issues creeping into his game last year above and beyond just a lack of match fitness.

There's every good chance he can / will address these issues, but it's not unreasonable to ask the question as to where he is at right now, as clearly he (or the club) have asked that same question in the off season.

Just quietly, the amount of "Rowey said...." in this thread is more concerning to me now.

Speaking of too simplistic.. ;)

He's obviously managing his body into the latter stages of his career. Let's talk end of season - I'm backing him in for a very good year.

Exactly. There is a transition, a changing of the guard going on here. And Truck will stay and play well for as long as it takes. Once he's confident Talia is consistently up to his standards, taking on the first forward, then he'll call time - and not before :)
