I like to think he'd want to change, I'm pretty sure all ice users would want to change, every time their coming down at least.

Your bang on in what you've said but one thing, dopamine doesn't actually give you the feeling of pleasure and reward it gives you the desire to feel pleasure and reward.
It's a very slight difference in terminology for the professional but a very big difference in hope for the patient.

Actually it does both, but can we not let the take-home message get lost among the pointscoring. Not all ice users want to quit ice, even after an acute psychotic episode has resolved and a person is "thinking straight", the call back to the drug is so pervasive that the notion of going clean is not even on the cards for some users to the point where they would rather live on the streets and have their Centrelink benefits free for the shards than have accommodation and food.

Didn't refute the point at all, picked out a typo.

So basically, you've got no idea. :thumbsu:

Oh my!

To answer your first question (which I missed), yes I have.

My original point refutes your point, we've all seen what happens when you stick him, Chick, Kerr, Fletcher etc in front, well at least 97,431 people...

I feel that the AFL, together with the West Coast Eagles should partner up with some leading health and addiction agencies, do whatever it takes, pay whatever it costs, get him the best treatment in the world, get him right over time, rewire his thinking, get him mentally and physically strong...so that he can help others and show them that people can actually beat addiction and give back to the community.
West Coast has already spent A LOT of money, have paid whatever it costs for the best treatment. They've tried to help him get right over time. He doesn't want/doesn't know how to accept the help thats been given to him.

In WA there is a program called Shalom House run by an ex-addict, low cost, privately funded and has a great rehabilitation rate. The owner has a couple stipulations, one being that he will only take people if they call and talk to him personally. They have to ask for help themselves. If a mum, dad, family member begs him to take someone in, he still requires the addict to want help. I think it is one of the big reasons it is succesful. If an addict doesn't want to reform, doesn't take responsibility for themselves (like Ben Cousins from what I've heard) you can send them to the US to get them the best treatment in the world, they will likely still not be successful.

So what are the options? If we cant detox ice users then what do we do? Shall we put them down?
Well what is currently happening is the arrested-custody-prison circus or the ambulance-police section 351-hospital-psych ward circus. Basically you pick one, or sometimes both, and you do it again and again several times a year for several years until you somehow die or get past it.

should we discuss Vegas now or later?
If west coast had of spent more time helping and less time covering up this situation wouldn't be happening.
STOP HELPING WEST COAST COVER UP & SHIFT THE BLAME!

Yup they win. Not that you'd know what that feels like. ;)

No evidence at all that on game day they were on the gear. Find me a single positive test.

Haha well on the contrary I started life raised as an Eagles supporter, in 93 something happened that changed my mind...

Just so we're clear about West Coast's "efforts" and when I say "efforts" I mean covering up...

July 3rd 1999, Cousin's had a "mild asthma attack" while warming up for a game against Melbourne, then fainted while at a restaurant after the game. West Coast's football manager, Rod Lester-Smith, said "Cousins MAY have been affected by asthma".

Early 2001, Cousins judgment had previously been questioned by West Coast management after he and Gardiner were photographed entering Crown Casino with Kizon in 2001. However, no disciplinary action was taken.
Trevor Nesbitt, the team's chief executive, said: "We are prepared to give them more than one chance. In this case, it is maybe their last chance... They have had chances before"

August 2001, West Coast coach Ken Judge was told by a Perth detective that Cousins and two of his teammates may have been using illegal drugs. Judge passed this information on to the club's administration but no action was taken.
Then on September 5th 2001 Ken Judge was sacked by West Coast.

May 2005, Cousins and teammate Michael Gardiner were questioned about their acquaintance with John Kizon and Troy Mercanti.

SEPTEMBER 2006, WEST COAST BEAT SYDNEY BY 1 POINT TO WIN THE AFL GRAND FINAL!

October 2006, during West Coast's end of year holiday in Las Vegas, Char Fletcher had a brush with death after his heart stopped and had to be revived after he stopped breathing. His case was so serious he spent four days in a U.S. hospital and flew straight back to Perth after checking out.

19 March 2007, Cousins underwent an AFL drug test and it was later confirmed that he had a substance abuse problem.
On 20 March 2007, Cousins was suspended indefinitely from West Coast.

1st of October 2007, Chris Mainwaring, a former West Coast Eagles player and close friend of Cousins, died of a drug overdose. Cousins received media attention as he had visited Mainwaring twice on the night of his death to provide "emotional support and deliver food".

I'm not denying any of this, not that I know all the details. I'm not denying that West Coast covered up the drug use or pretended it didn't happen. I'm not denying that West Coast could have intervened earlier and it may have set him on a different path. I'm not trying to protect West Coast in the least, lets be clear on that. I don't know all the details, it wasn't the point of my post in the least.

But in 2007 and the following years it is not as if West Coast sat on their hands and refused help, although whether their help was an attempt to save public face or to save the person is a different matter. Whether they should have done something earlier is also a different matter. West Coast have spent the money sending Cousins to get him the best treatment. They have tried to help him, but even the expensive rehab programs have not made a difference.

If you read the post I quoted it might help you understand what I'm saying. That person suggests West Coast get him/pay for the best rehab possible, and then he'll be rehabilitated and he can be a public figure condemning drugs and highlighting what they do. My point is that West Coast have not spared expense to get him into great rehab programs, but it hasn't worked. And it will continue to not work if Ben Cousins doesn't accept responsibility for his choices. Noone can help him now if he doesn't help himself.

Not sure why every thinks Ben Cousins is going to end up dead.

Homeless, penniless, and toothless with limited job opportunities; certainly. But death isn't particularly common with meth addiction. There's a hell of a long road to travel before that becomes a possibility.

Anyhoo, here's to his rehabilitation!

Ah that's 3 - 12, we've had that premiership cup 12 times!

Just so you don't get the wrong idea like all the other idiotic Eagle supporters in WA.
Yes all 12 count because let's face it, the WCE are playing in the renamed VFL for the same cup we've won 12 times.
We're a club but the WCE you support are a business that has an Owner and said owner profits from you morons!

Go ahead, please, try and argue it or just accept the truth of it! Hahahahahaha suckers!

He's probably a xanax addict too, and one day won't be able to find pippies and will have a buttload of cocaine or vodka and benzos or something instead

But hope he becomes better, he should go to India or something and float around

Bloke will be dead in 2-3 years, if that. Who really cares now anyway? He is an ex AFL player and just another junkie. Bloke clearly doesn't want to change.

Grow up pal.
Not only throwing stones in very poor taste considering there's a family involved no matter if he's a junkie.
But like every club you're also throwing stones in a glass house.
Pull ya head in!

You pull your head in. The clown said himself he wants to see his kids, maybe he should work harder at staying out of harms way and setting a decent example for them. He lost his career to drugs and made a documentary about it FFS. It's not like that was yesterday, it was 10 years ago. Look at Chris Mainwaring. It's time he got his act together and woke up to reality. It's not like he hasn't had money or support to help him out. He is just another criminal. Ship off.

I always loved cousins, the grin, the sheer althletic ability, those ABS, but I totally agree with this post. I got tears when I watched the news the other night. Hadn't heard much for a while and thought just maybe having a family had sorted him out. He has no one to blame but himself. And the real losers are his family, his kids. As for the mother ,didn't she have her own problems? Man those poor kids.
