As we've all been talking about the media's treatment of some of our players, I thought I'd mention something I saw last week.
I was at a lunch where Ben Cousins was the guest speaker. It was last Wednesday - the day he and Gardiner were named by The Age as allegedly having 'connections'. Anyway, he arrived (looking mighty fine I might add
) and he'd been followed by a group of various media people/journalists. They watched and followed his every move. If he walked a few steps in one direction, so did they. If he had a drink (of club lemon!) they were taking photo's of it. Nothing seemed too trivial to take a photo of.
He got up to say his bit, well to be 'interviewed' by Duckworth and they hung on every word. They had all been told that there would be no questions. It was the shortest thing like this I've ever been to. Know one was allowed to ask a question - all because they knew the media would carry on about the drugs & Kizon. It was actually quite disappointing, these sorts of lunches are usually really interesting and alot of fun.
When it was over (after 10 mins max!) he got straight up & walked down to the crowd & mingled abit. Again the media circled, it was like they were hoping to catch him 'revealing all'. Eventually they were moved outside, every 2-3 minutes one of them came back in to make sure he was still there. He ended up being taken out a back door without the media realising. Once they realised he was gone, all hell broke loose - half of them actually ran in one direction around the building and the other half ran the other way. I left about 10 minutes later and one lot were still in their car circling the building and checking out all the cars to make sure he wasn't still there. Obviously, by losing sight of him, they couldn't follow him to his next appointment for the day. It was actually quite funny to watch. Of course, I'm sure Ben would see it differently, and yet he was more than happy to sign autographs for people & have photo's taken. He handled it VERY well, far better than most would have I'm sure.
