It's a little unfair in saying Cousins was WC's best ever player and using it against Jimmy, as the Eagles are how old as opposed to Geelong? 100+ years can produce a lot more players, with some probably legends.

Mike Sheehan thinks that if Cousins played for Geelong, he would be Geelongs 3rd greatest player to ever play the game. Only had Ablett & Farmer ahead of him in his all time greatest players list.

Not really unfair at all :)

Lol I see you're having a little scratch at me too. Oh well.

Tbh, I never really trusted Mike "Geelong's cracks are starting to show" Sheahan.

I would happily put up an all time WCE team against an all time Geelong team, 100 years of hisotry or not. We've been blessed with some awesome players in our short history.

Cox, Cousins, Judd, Kerr, Matera, Mainwairing, Kemp in the mids.

Jako, McKenna, Woosha, Glass, McIntosh, Wirra in the backline

Forwards are where we are a little down, but still by the time JK, LeCras are done to add to Suma, Matera, and others we'll be alright.

Glass is considered among the likes of Cousins and Jakovich?

Not sure what you may think, but I can't see the credibility in that. In our all-time greats we would easily have at least a quarter of our current list ahead of him.

Erm ... shouldn't that be thought. I reckon Mike would want to re-do that list if someone was going to hold it to him as a current opinion. Realistically, he's slide GAJ and Scarlett in somewhere before Cuz.

Oh christ Cousins by so much it's not even funny.

Cousins =

6 x All Australian
4 x Best & Fairest winner
MVP winner
Brownlow medalist

Ranked the 42nd greatest player to EVER play the game by Mike Sheehan. A lot of West Coast people are convinced he was better than Judd at his best. All these accolades by 28.

In all seriousness, anyone saying Bartel either -

1. Has no idea about football
2. Never saw Cousins in his prime
3. Has been drinking

I can't believe we even need a poll for this.

Wow, in all seriousness, that is really conclusive evidence, i must be drinking!!

Come grand final day and given the choice, i'd take Jimmy. His 2007, 2009 and 2011 grand finals were all exceptional. His versatility has more value to the team, he was an attacking mid in 2007, defensive mid in 2009 and lead up forward/mid in 2011. With no disrespect to Cousins, i really like him as a player, but he could not go back or forward like Jim.

Actually he started his career as a forward and played very well there for his age.

He was just too good in the middle for him to ever be moved.

Glass has won AA nods at full back in the era of Scarlett, not far behind him, not as damaging running off, but just as capable of shutting someone down.

Captain of the club, club champion without a doubt.

Am I the only one who thinks this poll should be a lot closer? I mean Cousin's was a champ and at his explosive best could inflict a lot more damage in the midfield then Bartel could, but lets not forget how amazingly consistent Bartel has been. He's also one of the first blokes I'd go to with the footy in his hands to kick a crunch goal in a tight match. So very reliable.

Shouldn't really be closer, everyone loves Jimmy, but it's a clear cut case where Cousins was simply a better player. Even missing a year and a half out he still played 270 games.

Bartel = 3 All Australians by 28
Cousins = 6 All Australians by 28

Not only is Cousins "explosive best" miles ahead of Bartels best, but it also says he was a lot more consistent as well. Bartel shouldn't even have 1 vote in this poll truth be told.

Yeah you would be the only one. Bartel is consistent but that was Cousins' gig. You just knew he was going to bring it every week. Bartel is good, Cousins is great.

Fair points. You gotta admire just how hard Cousin's pushed himself on the field too, even in the latter part of his career at Richmond when he obviously wasn't anywhere near as good as his glory days at West Coast, he'd drive himself into the ground week in, week out.

One of the very best elite mids that went around, but lets not forget that Bartel is a gun. Even after a brownlow he is still constantly underrated.

Would say Cousins' peak output > Bartel's as much as it pains me.

Lol @ HAD using a list made by Mike Sheahan to support the Cousins argument though.

I think we have all seen the arguements about using Brownlows as effective measures. The year he won GAJ cleaned up in every other major award if i recall correctly. Also telling that Bartel has never really threatened in the Brownlow in any other year, 13 being his second best year (13x2 and 10, being his only other years in double figures)

Bartel is rightly rated as a gun player, just a level below an all time great in Cousins.

Or the 6 All Australians he has won to Bartels 3. Or the 4 Best & Fairest Cousins has won to Bartels 0. Are they valid enough?

Well yeah because they're not awarded by a man of dubious football knowledge looking to create controversial lists to generate publicity and consequently income.

Fair enough. I don't mind Sheehans list though. Maybe because they are always full of Hawthorn players ;)

To be fair his top 50 this year wasn't that bad compared to some of the others that were floating around.

That last sentence just hurts though.
