I tend to agree that he is a good prospect but most likely he will have to go through the rookie list hopefully with the Dogs.

No he isn't an absolute gun. He is a good ordinary player who gets alot of cheap kicks running off halfback. His kicking is just average and his decision making is so-so. Yes he was one of Westerns better players but I doubt he is draft material.

And yes I have seen him play 6 or 7 times this year.

Westerns better players???? He won their Best and Fairest he has made All-Australian before and will be very very unlucky not to be picked up and i have seen him play for at least 4 years now, and he is continually improving.

I agree "Snickers", Ben Davies is a gun. He has all the skills and smarts to play at the top level. Ordinary kick??? He has kicked goals from 60 metres running off half back on more than one occasion this year. He was also the most consistent player in the Western Jets team every week for tackles, smothers, spoils etc.

when was he all australian? i thought Western only had one player make the vic metro team this year and it wasn't Davies.

Did he make it at under 14 or 16 level?

Under 16. And then when he went to Ireland to play the International Rules he was one of Australia's better players

what happen to him this year. You would have thought that he could have at least played in the Vic metro side. But it can sometimes be very political that national under 18 selection process.

Was he at least invited to the draft camp? if not i don't like his chances of being picked up.

He and about 100 others.

Okay here's the maths Snickers.

There will probably be about 60 players drafted on the 2Oth. Info from a recruiter today was that he expects alot of clubs to pass on picks around pick 55. Calton has the last pick at No:70, that could actually end up being pick 60. So if we work on 60 we have the following......

60 players less 5 that are already nomiated as father sons makes 55.

From memory, 73 players (excluding father/sons) were invite to draft camp which means atleast 5 clubs wanted to look at them.

What is the percentage of draft camp kids that get picked up come draft day?

Over 80% I suspect (Someone will know the real answer) But lets say 80% for arguments sake......

80% of 73 is 58. Now give or take a few players and a few percentage points here and there, there isn't much room, if any, left for players outside of the draft camp.

Now I have a list of 80 players that went to State screenings around the Country. (Davies was one of them and he did okay on the figures I have) Add a few VFL players and a few smookies and the odds of Davies being drafted are not good. I suspect he has a 1/90 to 1/100 chance to be drafted.

Making AA at U16 level and then not making the Vic Metro team can mean many things. One suggestion could be that he hasn't kicked on as well as some would have hoped. Winning Westerns B&F is a good effort but lets be serious for a moment. He didn't really have alot of opposition. Prismall, Twomey and Rose were the only real contenders.

We will nodoubt beg to differ on Ben and for his sake I hope he gets drafted but the odds, as I have shown are against it. He is maybe worth a look as a rookie but IMHO he is not in the lands top 60-65 players.

As I said previously, I think he should be considered as a rookie list selection because he could become a good footballer at the next level.

Oldschool,

Do you see any problem with my maths ????
The numbers apply to all potential draftees so whilst it is a difficult task to get selected at the National Draft, the rookie list gives clubs the chance to draft potentially good players that perhaps are not quite ready yet.
Davies does have the potential to become a good player so the rookie list might just give him the chance.
Providing the clubs do the right thing with rookie selections it could give a number of the next tier of players their chance of coming through the system.

You don't think Davies is good enough however, I think he is a chance for the rookie list. There is no right or wrong and we just differ on this point.

Oldschool,

My question was not meant to come across in and an aggressive, teeth clinched, manner. It was meant to be a polite question looking for some feedback to see if my figures were close to accurate. Is 80% about the correct number for draft camp invitees being drafted. The suggestion of 60 players being drafted was the opinion of a recruiter I know.

Didn't take it as agressive, it's a good discussion.
I would have thought that 80% was a bit high, not out of the range though, but it does change a bit each year depending on what the clubs are looking for.
Some show up to draft camp and don't quite measure up.

Ben Davies was almost best on ground in the first practice match against Vic Country this year but missed out on selection because he was hit by a car prior to the national championships and injured his shoulder. Had this not of happened, deserved to be certainly in the team this year.
