Former Geelong skipper Ben Graham has been fined $2000 by the AFL for his boundary-line confrontation with Western Bulldogs ruckman Luke Darcy in round one.
AFL football operations manager Andrew Demetriou announced the penalty on Tuesday, after seeking an explanation from both players.
Darcy had left the field under the blood rule when he was confronted by Graham in the players’ interchange area during the final quarter of the opening-round match at Telstra Dome.
The Bulldogs ruckman received physical attention from numerous Cats after he shirt-fronted young Geelong player Joel Corey and cut his head in the process.
Matthew Scarlett, Darren Milburn and James Kelly all expressed their displeasure at Darcy’s actions, before Graham had his say on the interchange bench.
In receiving the fine, Graham was told that his confrontation was “avoidable and not in the best interests of the game”.
Darcy avoided a fine, but was warned against engaging in any such skirmish.
The Western Bulldogs won the match by 39 points.
