He retired to move back home with his family, so taking a contract with Brisbane is understandable. However a move back to Victoria to play and coach with Collingwood goes completely against that. Make up your mind Ben.

Maybe he just didn't want to play with the Lions

Yeah he would. Rotate with Hedge off the bench. After loosing the Prelim to Woori Yallock last year we need a back up ruck.
You're an idiot.

Either way good luck to Ben if he does go to the pies, would benefit Grundy you'd imagine.

Collingwood delisted two ruckman in Wood and Cegler as the balance for their VFL side was apparently up the creek and hindered each others development. Playing Hudson would create the same situation.

lol he is a ruck coach with the potential to play as an "emergency", if something tragic happens to our ruck stocks in 2013.

He won't be getting the game time that will be designated to Witts and Grundy and hinder their development.

Even in the lower leagues he'd be taking regular breaks so his body held up.

Great guy off the field, nice little earner for his retirement for 12 months work.

If he's placed on the rookie list he will play that is a given. Interesting to hear Timmy's thoughts on this.

lol it's not a given at all.

His primary role is to be the the ruck coach. He will play in the games where Witts and Grundy may not be involved in as we manage their loads and development.

Then why rookie him? He might as well just join the VFL side and become the ruck coach. Your not going to have a list spot filled with a bloke that won't play.

As a back up. If Jolly goes down, they wont want to throw Grundy and Witts in the deep end. They might give them a few games together, but they'd want to rest them at some stage, which is where Hudson would step up.

No dramas with that but it means he will have to be playing VFL football during the season.

Not a bad move considering he's going to coach and perhaps just take a spot on the rookie list as insurance, but like others it's a bit strange as he moved to QLD to be with his family only last year and now he's back in Melbourne.

He will. People are assuming that we are stuck with a Jolly / Lynch set up, but we can blood Witts or Grundy as forwards / rucks as well (as Ogilivie said though, the sub rule is basically heightist in this regard). There won't be necessarily a three ruck log jam in the VFL.

Another demonstration of the advantage of having a stand alone VFL side. Of course we'd rather not have to use him. Of course, the development time should be put into Grundy/Witts. But reality is that we only have one bona-fide ruck in our list and Jolly is on his last legs.

Let's not forget he only gets activated if a player has a long-term injury and it would have to be one of the big men too.
Not only does Hudson provide insurance for Jolly, but he can come in if one of the young rucks has a long term injury. Would hate for either Grundy or Witts to ruck in the VFL alone if the other went down.

To be fair Huddo is a champ and I personally would love to see him play on.
I was sceptical when Brisbane drafted him but he was far more than insurance, he can be a #1 ruckman, something I did not expect was still in his capabilities. He can still bash & crash post-bounce with the new rules - I think it would be an inspired choice late in the rookie draft.

Again Collingwood supporters who play up something they have done as ground breaking.:rolleyes: Any club can do this and they don't have to use a rookie spot to do it.
