How is it gaming the system stav all he said was he’d prefer to stay in Victoria.

It’s not as thought any of these kids are sure things just choose another kid from the same bracket. Surely we‘re all different and have our own wants and needs in life. I see it as refreshingly honest and he’s probably saved an interstate side two years of wasted development and angst.

Even though occasionally there’s a high profile player drafted in the NFL that refuses to sign ultimately they get to where they want to go and life moves on. Eli Manning was a classic example he was drafted by the chargers and traded to the giants. We need more mechanisms like in draft trading to give players and teams the best outcome for both.
I’m talking generally and how much more often this is occurring.

wingard did it to GWS to get to port. Port binned him in the end.

I know for a fact Ben Jacobs tried andport still took him.

I know for a fact Harley Balic was offered his first year contract in a lump sum by his parents to not play interstate and stay home.

Bailey Smith a couple of years back, went to Carlton. He brought a medical certificate as a reason he couldn't leave Victoria.

I don’t care how much North offer him, if he chooses to go there knowing where they are sitting right now, with 5 years left of his career, I’d be seriously shocked. The Bombers are another story.
North are quietly confident they can rebuild and Shoot up the ladder in that time frame.

there are a few people I know who are connected via sponsors and at board level with them. They think if they land Horne their midfield is set with what they have and they will go after McKay with serious coin too.

they also speak incredibly highly of Billings.

Yep.

as I said. They should Atleast give it a crack. No issues if they want to come home if they tried.

on the other hand I think clubs need more power similar to American sports to even this process out.

Going to be interesting for sure.
I like JB, will be sorry if he leaves, and hope we don’t mess up any compensation we get for him if he does - as in the past.
I do understand the reasons you have given previously for why we would consider letting him go though. I tend to get a bit attached to our players, especially those we drafted.

If we’re going after Bing like the majority of you say we are, it’s a bit strange we picked Allison up in the draft. I know they’re not the same type of forward but we already have King, Membrey, Battle and Marshall to choose from.

Don't worry fella's - Ben is on his way to the Saints next season.

Gil has approved it, thrown a bit a extra cash our way to help pay for him and apparently all we need to do is convince Armo and Gilbo to come out of retirement as trade bait - did you know they're from Qld.

I hear Mav Weller is keen to play with his brother in direct swap. No picks involved...

Wait I thought they already had McKay ;)

Not surprised Gold Coast are cranky. We would be as well if the boot was on the other footy. But it’s now certain that ‘grumbles’ Cochrane will play the victim card. Nothing surer.

I was intrigued Finnis made the remark. It sounded like hubris, but it was unlike him to do that. My initial assumption was that Ben King had a clause in his contract that allowed him an early trade to the club of his choice. If not, the whole thing got a lot tougher.

If Ben wants to get to the Saints then he may have to tell Gold Coast he wants to come home and deal with all the pressure they will heap on him. They won’t do him any favours. This is where his manager earns his keep.
About the Finnis remark - I'm pretty sure all of Lethlean, Gags and Finnis have made the 'they would look good in the jumper' comment at some point over the past 12 months when asked about certain players coming to the club. It just seems to be the go-to vague comment when they dont really want to answer the question.

What I don’t get is why is Tony Cochrane getting his nose so out of joint about it. Like it’s not as if he said “Ben king will definitely play for us in the future. It’s just a matter of what we have to do to get him to leave Gold Coast”

I agree. It’s all pretty tame. But discretion should be the better part of valour, especially if it’s the CEO giving an interview. Gold Coast are awfully precious, best not to give them an excuse to sook about retention issues.

I’m still hopeful Ben has an exit clause in his contract. One would hope his Manager had the foresight to have it inserted. I wouldn’t be surprised if Lethlean told his Dad to consider it.

I think part of it is how many of their player's have left in recent years and how they are sick of it happening every year.

All the more reason to get Ben out of there before the SA clubs come hard for their 2 boys or other VIC clubs make big plays for Rowell and/or Anderson.

The bigger question for Gold Coast is why do their players who are wanted by rival clubs (which happens to all other 17 AFL clubs) want to leave when pursued. I thought the Gold Coast was supposed to be the place to be in Australia yet given the chance few want to stay. Sydney has no trouble keeping their talent.

Maybe just maybe the real reason Gold Coast lose all their talent is because the club has no soul with no background. Made up club and essentially a franchise of the AFL brand. Tiny supporter base that attends probably because they are given free tickets. Club is probably propped up by the AFL just to remain viable.

I like watching Gold Coast play and i do like what they are trying to achieve. They certainly do have heart but that's where the positives end.

There are no quotes at all from Gold Coast or anything in that article, just a guess that they are unhappy.
Typical SEN.
Shit campaigners

sorry I just realised this post is not really adding anything of substance. I just meant SEN are a pack of grubs and Craig Hutchison is just an enormous toilet.

Of course we’re interested in Ben.

Imagine in the 2000s if we had 2 Riewoldts instead of 1?
People would complain we paid too much and would want us to keep all those great players from the Timmy/Blight era.
Or we draft him at pick 9 in the 2006 draft for the reason that Gherig was going to be done within a few years and that Jacks peak years would start as Nick's golden years were about to fade. Still makes me grumble when I see Jack play as he should have been ours. There's your two for no cost other than Armo.

You obviously haven't spent any time there...
