Restricted Free Agent Ben King

Much like the Butters situation, seems like King is only linked to contenders. How do you even satisfy the Suns in a trade if you’re the Hawks or Pies?

Can Pies afford to remove themselves from 3 consecutive drafts when they’ve got such a gulf in young talent as it is? Could reach West Coast levels of rebuilding

Kings best option seems like a 2 year extension, see how Suns go, then leave for godfather offer as a UFA

I don’t know their list management but I find it hard to believe they’d be able to match $2 mill a season.

They would have to trade players out to do so you’d think.
Ben King is the Suns most important player imo.

Humphrey might ask for a trade again, that will free up the cap. There is no way the Suns can afford King to leave.

Sounds as if Gold Coast doesn’t have a salary cap, if they can match any offer.

With half their players on 1m+ contracts, infinite first round draft picks, that they can give them away for free, knowing they can get more through academy selections. Recent past history of giving away a top 10 draft pick to get rid of a player and his salary. They really are not on a level playing field, as no other club, could afford to match a matching offer.

A lot easier when he is a free agent, not saying he would leave cheap but like always it gets to a point where they accept a reasonable offer over losing him for nothing.

Jeremy Cameron is the only precedent. 3 firsts…

Who is a better player and they were late firsts, as i said i am not suggesting King would leave cheap. Just suggesting that the negotiating power is not as strong.

Jeremy Cameron is the only precedent. 3 firsts…

Three firsts in the one draft with two seconds going back the other way. A function of Geelong having our pick traded in priority pick from Gold Coast traded for in 2019.

The only teams with extra firsts this year are Carlton and Melbourne. If King is to leave via trade then it's most likely the package on offer would be similar to Charlie Curnow to Sydney or Zach Merrett (not) to Hawthorn which will mean picks in the 2027 and 2028 drafts. They're not going to get a Christian Petracca type deal.

Yeah good point, he’d be on the rookie deal still but allowed cap space for him.

Assume they won’t want to lose him either but he’s probably less important currently to them than holding King.

On the flip side if King wants to go, he'll go.

GC are in the enviable position of having Read, Walter and Ugle-Hagan on the books so it's not like the cupboard is bare. None of them are as good as King but if he goes they will have useable cap space and more draft assets.

There is no way GWS would have been able to match on Jeremy Cameron but the AFL let them do it anyway. Because the free agency is before trade week you could just say oh yeah we'd trade this other guy out if we needed to, when you never actually would in practice.

They do have a stockpile of key fwd talent, wonder in JUH was picked up in some part as coverage in case King did leave. Still gives them 3 super talented and mobile KPF’s.

Very good point! Didn’t even think of that. You should have to prove you can actually pay the contracts.

Guess clubs might just argue ‘oh we’ll trade players to fit them in the cap’.

It won’t be an issue at the Pies - they will have the cap space to out price the Suns.

Suns would’ve have a spare 1.8 million to match. Pendles, Sidebottom are two that will help open up cash and Grundy is now off the books.
