Don't mind him.

6 goals in a final says ability to step up.

Clearly driven too, having moved down to Melbourne to achieve the dream.

Can't help but feel we might have all ended up happier if Battle was first, and Long was second, but eh.

highlights package looks great. given he was passed over in 2015 draft and went back and plied his trade in the VFL for a year and improve to get drafted. Shows a bit about his character in my eyes.
Couldn't give a **** about that can he play footy or not is what I care about

All the kids in the draft can play footy, few have ever been drafted as already great players. What often separates them in development is their character and personalities.

My only concern with Ben is he has a bit of a tribunal history.
If he can keep his nose clean he could be a gun.

Would you mind giving a brief rundown of him?
19 year old forward/defender that has great speed from the contest, hard as nails and jumps into packs.
Can play up the ground and shutdown damaging key defenders while also have great footy iq while reading the play. uses his speed to break off from his defender and get easy goals.

Went toe to toe with Lydenn Dunn in the Grand Final and won the overall battle, will play round 1 imo

Wow, sounds good didn't know anything about him. thank you

From the BigFooty phantom draft:

Pick 43 Essendon Ben Long 181cm 73kg Utility NT/ Allies/ Footscray VFL/ Melbourne Grammar

Ben Long has been a football journeyman in his young life.
Son of Chris Long. He started his football in the top end and then moved to Melbourne Grammar on a football/academic scholarship.
This has paid off in spades. He has done extremely well in his studies and his footy has come on in leaps and bounds.
Long has demonstrated the ability to play as a forward and a defender which is pleasing versatility for a young player to demonstrate.
He had two standout performances this year.
His defensive effort against Ben Ainsworth at the Nationals was terrific.
Ainsworth couldn't out sprint him, couldn't outwork him, couldn't physically dominate him and mentally was beat by a determined opponent.
Long also has a wonderful final for the Footscray VFL side in a final against Collingwood. He played as a small forward and kicked 6 goals. He showed speed, goal sense and footy smarts. He also showed his kicking was a bit better than advertised. I was equally as impressed by his Grand Final performance. He was not overawed by the occasion and he sat a couple of Demons on their arses in a somewhat spiteful contest.

Longs strengths are his speed, his versatility, his aggression and his dislike of losing a contest.
I think he can be a lockdown small defender at AFL level who could be capable of turning into a tagging midfielder.
He tested well at the combine.
He ran 20 metres in 3.01. He ran 3km in 10.52 which is a little below expectation. He scored 13.5 in the beep which was average. He scored 25 in the kicking test and 25 in the clean hands test which was both above average but 14 in the goal kicking test which was below average. His 25.90 in the repeated sprints was slightly below average.

Disagree - would.rather a bit of #$@% in him!

Ben's a belter.

Terrific lad with evasive skills and goal sense who isn't afraid to give it back to taller players who try to bully him.

Spewing we missed out. Looked like a reach at 25 but to nab Battle at 39 cancelled that out. Congrats, hope they play many games for you.

Well not much of him but looks very tough and courageous.
I am a bit surprised he didnt test better in the sprint and jumps but who knows.
Apparently a lot of those who are indigenous don't test all that well at the combine, even for speed, if they're really quick. Lewis Jetta was an example of this. He is lightning-quick on a footy field, but at the combine he apparently only tested at about a 2.97sec or something, which is only 0.02 sec off what Hugh Goddard did! Sam Powell-Pepper has serious speed but only did a 3.01sec or so, like Long.

Much better to have someone who plays quick, than just tests quick.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love him to keep a bit of mongrel, but the hit in the NTFL prelim earlier this year wasn't something I would want any Saints player to be doing.
Also cost him a his place in the premiership side the following week.

So happy he's got an AFL home. Loved watching him for Footscray this year - Good luck Longy and good stuff Saints you've got a good one here.

Speaking of Footscray/St Kilda relations, how's Nick Coughlan going? Was bullish on him too.
