Still s WIP is Coughlan. Saints and Dogs have had some swaps currently.
Bevo as player then coach ( you owe us one there), Koby, now young Long.

Long looks likely from the highlights.

Think we went early as Cedric Cox was gone and Dog would have picked Long prior to our second pick.

We got lucky with Battle. You got a beauty in English

Can't help but to think he was very much a pick for needs type and could be a ripper
 
Welcome Long!! don't know anything about him but the very little I have he looks very talented. Gresh to long combos upcoming.

I'm not at all convinced that we would have selected Long with Pick 26. Most on our board thought he wasn't going to be taken with either of our first two picks (18, 26) but probably wouldn't still be there are our third pick (50, which ended up becoming 49).

Saints fans should be happy with Long, on what I have seen of him he belongs in the AFL and not the VFL.

This draft just had so much talent compared to other years that it's difficult to calibrate what type of pick some players would have been worth in a more typical year's draft.

Saw a bit of Ben playing for Footscray this season. Very smart, naturally gifted player. Ben is still very raw and will need time to develop, but he could turn into something special. Has something about him. Good luck to him and the Saints next season.

We have really focussed on getting developed players in this year with Steele, Stevens and now Long who should be a lot closer to senior footy than kids straight out of school. He's the type we need but wasn't on my radar at all. Hope he's going to be a gun.

Apparently Long is still at school...and maybe still growing, so he's probably just as raw as most of the others who got drafted tonight, maybe even more so, with everyone developing at different rates.

Pretty exciting to get someone who is still at school, but who was good enough to kick 6 sausages in a VFL prelim... off no VFL preseason.

Playing VFL is a massive in road to development especially with finals. It should put him a year ahead of some of the others.

You got a good kid. To be perfectly honest I'm really bummed the Bulldogs couldn't get him with our 2nd or 3rd pick.

He's got good physical attributes but he's also very clever and elusive so he might find a home as a small forward.

I'm sure yahoo 7 have the VFL prelim up when he went ham on Collingwood and kicked a bag. You'll see plenty of these sneaky sidesteps and smart plays in action in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Even though Collingwood were basically traffic cones at that point it was still impressive.

As for the position, who cares where you picked players. As soon as the first ball is bounced the draft position stops mattering. As happy as I am with English, getting this kid later on in the draft would have made me ecstatic but the saints nicked him :p. Hope he does well.
 
Keep reading that that this is a pick for needs at the Saints; thought that the need was speed as an outside mid. I'm intrigued by this pick, Ben Long has played in the back and forward lines, not as a mid.

His attributes ie quickness, aggression and x factor are something we need no doubt and he does seem to be the type of player we do not have in that regard.

Are we still in need of the quick outside mid or do people think we are starting to cover this with Freeman, potentially Acres, Stevens?, etc still think we are lacking in this area

Really looking forward to watching him play and where he plays!
