Never been an avid fan of Ben Reid until yesterday, i noticed his awareness of the situation has improved tenfold on previous efforts and his ability to spoil and negate was excellent.
With a well structured set of backmen around him i believe he could develop into a very useful player.
Liked Dawe's game also in that he not only created a better structure for the other forward's noticeably Cloke, but also had the capacity to roam with a greater level of purpose than Leroy and brought the small forwards into play. Definitely worth perservering with.:):)

I thought all our early 2006 draftees looked good on Sunday, but there appear to be widely varying opinions on their efforts. Most agree all were serviceable, but some say N Brown was best, some were more impressed by Reid, some Dawes.

One of and maybe both Reid and Brown will keep their spots for next week, and Dawes shouldn't be pushed out by L Brown and won't by JA, so we'll get another good look at them against some suspect KP stocks belonging to Carltank.

I agree that out of the three that Reid was the most impressive. His 1%ers were fantastic and was cool under pressure.

Give him a few games to find some confidence and I predict he will start to offer more rebound too. In a few years time he could be one of the games greatest defenders

For someone who is such a shocking kick for goal, his disposal by foot appears to be outstanding.

I haven't seen much of his VFL stuff, but can someone confirm?

Seems he just fires off bullets that hit blokes lace out.

He seems more comfortable when he's kicking flat, low and hard. That's not really the technique for a set shot, so he's out of his comfort zone there.

This year in his VFL games his kicking would push Clement. No joke.

^^^Blasphemy!

It should be noted that he was rubbish in 2008 kicking for goal, but he didn't really develop his field kicking properly til last year, so who knows what his goal-kicking is like now? I suspect it'd be much better.

I'd like to see him have another crack up forward 1-2 years down the line when he's a bit stronger, still think he's easily our most talented potential forward.

His effort when Gumbleton had the sit in the goal square and Reidy tracked back in desperation to spoil was the moment that I realised that "this kid will be a star"

He needs a solid month in the 1sts to prove to everyone that he is up to it, just give him senior action MM, we need 2 KPP defenders come finals time!

There was some speculation that he twinged a hammy late in the game, but the club has said it was only cramp.

Good news. I thought he was the best out of the three young fellas. Knew when to punch, field kicking was superb and didn't panic when he had the ball under pressure. His awareness will continue to improve too as he has only spent the one year of football down back and still getting used to the pace of AFL football.

By foot Reid is excellent. Showed it throughout last season in the 2s.

When drafted initially lacked penetration which was his biggest problem in front of goal. But out of defence in the past year his disposal by foot has been excellent along with his rebound which he might begin to show as he gets comfortable over the coming weeks at AFL level.

There were times in this game, when on Hurley that I thought he absolutely pantsed him and played like an elite defender.

At half time I thought he was in the best 4 or 5 players on the ground TBH. My sister, who didn't really know much about him but thought he was number 2 at the time. We have a serious player on our hands with this kid. Brown and Dawes did well but Reid was easily the best of the 3. Dawes will stay in, our structure is a hundred times better with a player of that size going in there. Some of his marking was suspect though. I think Nate will go out for Presti but I think he will end up being a very solid player for us. He just seems to be the type of player that will do his job every week. I think Reid and Presti is simply a better mix considering the fact that Presti is so dour and Reid's kicking makes us a considerable better side. I am VERY VERY optimistic about Reid now. Against Melbourne I though he beat his opponent but his positioning was a bit strange at times but yesterday he was the real deal.

I'm glad to see people warming to Reid. I've been pumping up his tyres for a long time.

I even took him as my magpie buddy this year. I haven't even started a thread for it yet:eek::eek::)

I find it extremely amusing when other clubs rate our KPP, they say we have nothing, usless barren for years. I simply sit back and smile.
It happened on the weekend, the whole look look hurley's gonna smash you, gumby is king, lockie henders is gonna smash maxy next week, so on and so on.
The Look on there faces when Reidy spoiled gumby was PRICELESS!

Pure GOLD

I find some opp supporters so daft because of this, we have some on the best young KPP in the league, we just dont have enough spots for them to play. We have a boat load of KPP coming in from NSW. OH life is sweet. Maxy even confirmed on one week at a time that the RUS is only playing def to get game fitness back and will be back at FF within the month.

Oh and Benny boy here is going to cause alot of forwards grief this year and beyond!

I've always had high hopes too, but a lot of people find it hard to look past his output and see the potential there. The usual retort to "potential" is "lack of footy smarts", but he showed yesterday his anticipation and composure are strengths that will only get better with experience.

In regards to the potential of our youngsters, I rate Reid the equal highest (excluding established guys like Thomas and Pendles).

Reid - A+
Sidebottom - A+
Wellingham - A
Beams - B+
Wood - B
McCarthy - B
Macaffer - B
Dick - B
Dawes - B
Toovey - C
Blight - C
Anthony - C
Goldsack - C
Nathan Brown - C
Barham - F

LOL agree, went on the essendon board last week and read through their post about how, Reid, Brown, and Dawes wouldn't even get a game at essendon, one guy even insted that they were "d graders" at best, and that he actully knew allot about them. Dont thoses essendon supporters look silly now:p. Although to be fair it was hardly against good opponets, the test will be agaisnt better teams in the games to come.

Reid A+, Beams B+? How's that crackpipe you're smoking? At best, Reid is a B+, and I comfortably rate Dick, Toovey and Goldsack above him even in terms of potential. And christ, Barham gets an F?

It's pretty simple really. People expect too much too soon. They expect Reid to be a world beater whether it forward or back early on. Obviously due to his high draft selection.

His first 30 games at AFL level need to be ranked on how he controls his opponents, and matchups are critical. He needs to play on the right players early.

After 30 games he should have found enough confidence at the level and adjusted to the pace, then we can look at his output with the ball.

All he needs to do at this stage is beat his opponent and stay composed.

Tooves' potential is obviously quite limited ... I love the bloke but he'll never be a star.

Beams will more than likely be a better player than Reid, but the combination of size, athleticism and footskills that Reid has is very, very rare.
