This is the problem with politics. Too many people worried about who could “own” and “destroy” the other in a debate rather than the real question of “what are the right policies we need?”.

On the whole “socialism” thing, what Americans call “socialism” we Australians generally call “normal way of life”. For instance we have the same style of socialised healthcare in Australia that types like Shapiro love to hate but we can see that it provides better outcomes at a lower cost to a higher proportion of the population compared to America. And we’re not living in a Soviet gulag to get it either.

Do we include the total government spending on health as the cost of Medicare? Those services would be assumed to be part of it even if they sit somewhere else on the ledger.

We are talking a difference between medicare costing $19,000,000,000 a year and medicare costing $75,000,000,000 depending on your definition.

I just want to be clear if we are going to start drawing comparisons that we should be dealing in the same units.

The Australian private health insurance system is still highly regulated by the government with what they allow you to cover and with price controls. Plus you get a tax exemption if you have PHI, so it’s not really a free market system. I see it as more of a supplemental insurance you can pay for that works within our overall national universal healthcare system.

And Medicare exists which provides cover to every single Australian citizen, which is what Shapiro and co strongly rail against as the dreaded “socialised medicine”.

Add to that the Pharmaceutical Benfitis Scheme, which is fully regulated drug prices, again totally against free market competition.

So Australia’s overall Universal health system is a great example of socialism and the government doing something much better than the free market.
 
I used to enjoy listening to this guy occasionally but he’s annoying the s**t out of me lately.

His stupid Daily Wire twitter keeps reposting videos of him ‘destroying leftist students’ when he’s speaking at these events. Literally these kids come up and are clearly nervous, however they’ve sat through his speech to listen and put forward an opinion yet he just tears them to shreds, then reposts it in his own news site, YouTube and Twitter? Just a giant flog.

He’s also a massive hypocrite, Kyle Kulinski offered to debate him at politicon and Shapiro never responded, then posted an article with the click bait title ‘why are leftists scared of debating Ben Shapiro?’. He’s as ‘fake news’ as anyone.

One more thing, he gets on a podcast or talk show with someone like Jordan Peterson and talks about how ridiculous identity politics are yet he is literally obsessed with labeling anyone and everyone. He wrote a book about ‘destroying’ lefties ffs.

Anyway yeah just over this bloke. Go away Shapiro.

I've said elsewhere that religion isn't a topic one should converse in if one wants to hold a ground of credibility, but unfortunately Shapiro and Peterson have opened themselves up to a stoning and ridicule, because they simply can't plausibly deflect rationality

Keep the issues seperate and one can still enjoy Shapiro and even Peterson as they still have plenty to say in the right forum.....the forum of religion simply doesn't serve them well. It serves no one well.

Actually their belief in God is one of their saving graces.....and in shapiros' case, his only saving grace.

No. Both are relative powerhouses in general debate, but become cringe-worthy to listen to when flying the flag for religion.......and I think they know it.

Just watch the awkward body language and the diminishing bravado in such debates.
Peterson in particular sides on semantics as his trick, but ultimately semantics alone, let him down. There's no meat to be had on that bone.

This is the rod one builds for their own back as the more you say........ultimately the less you really have to say.

Snapshots of an individuals strengths are fine, but once you start preaching to know everything about everything, you will come undone.

As long winded as Peterson can be, his talking points re: religion are lessons from the bible rather than believing in God - he won’t even admit he believes in God correct?

Shapiro literally only has a crack at students or mediocre telivision hosts, and Piers Morgan that time like 8 years ago.

He’s hinted at running for president 2024, hope he does and fails and withers away.

The first reply to this sub is a very good counter to the idea that universal healthcare would fix everything.

I'd like to know what you actually think Peterson's talking points and positions regarding religion are. Feel free to quote me over in the Peterson thread because they are very different in a lot of ways to Shapiro.

The position of either doesn't concern me, as much as the strength of their arguments.
Here we have two guys who generally come out with all barrels loaded and firing, yet put themselves in a position where they can only shoot blanks.
To be fair, my argument is leaning more towards religions position in general, rather than an individuals, but I felt genuinely embarrassed (sort of) for both Shapiro and Peterson, watching them being dismantled piece by piece by Sam Harris.

I don't mind Shapiro, but when he discusses religion against someone like Harris, you get the feeling he's not really believing his own words.
As for Peterson; Semantics can only get you so far and he's very good with juggling words, but when someone on the other side of the debate can dismantle the words and throw the argument back for what it really is........he looks as though he knows he's done.

Peterson’s known to admit he’s wrong and concede if required. Jim Jeffries cornered him with ease a while back and JP straight up said ‘maybe I was wrong’, it was a nice side to him actually.

I don't really set out to watch Peterson for the sake of it.
He's very clever on some topics, but shows up to be not too clever on others.....just like anyone, Sam Harris included.
It seems to me that the more popular one becomes, the more one is 'supposed' to be knowledgeable on all topics.

Yeah fair call - Peterson’s main attraction is his psychology knowledge, and it crosses over to political BS. Half the time he is coerced into it by journos but yeah, I know what you are saying.

Shits me up the wall. Why bother to interact if you're only seeking those who agree with you? Completely and comprehensively wastes everyone's time. It's why I don't mind Peterson, at least when it comes to debating; if someone approaches him from a position of honest debate, then the exchange is polite and thought provoking, instead of some putz trying to wedge him on something. Point scoring is for idiots who're seeking to be entertained.
