Opinion Ben Sinclair - Never again

So many posters still equate goalkicking with disposal accuracy. They are completely different. Sinclair has shown he has the yips at one, but is very competent at the other. His efforts on the backline have been outstanding since he went there.

They have but as a backline player he has to stick more tackles.
His light frame still is an issue. Playing very well though.:thumbsu:

Sinclair is playing good honest football. He is definitely a small defender as opposed to a small forward.

Loses his spot when Toovey comes back in simply because Toovey is better in the air, quicker and is equivalent in footskills. However, for now Sinclair is holding his spot.

I think if we drop Sinclair, then Shaw goes more defensive and maybe Harry O needs to go back as well. Otherwise Seedsman has to play a lock down role.

I still think Sinclair is a fair way off top 22, but he deserves his spot at the moment.

I haven't written him off as a potential small forward. Some of his work when playing forward was as good as anyones, just wasn't able to finish it. A bit of time down back to build confidence and a sense of belonging at the senior level and who knows.

To be honest I thought Sinclair's game yesterday was decent. Not great, but not terrible.
He did however have some "Sinclair only" moments, but the circumstances of the match meant that we didn't pay any price.

We don't usually see players exposed in 13 goal wins. Lets see how he goes in the next fortnight.

IMO he should only be depth, however I will concede that he is improving.

Personally I don't understand the need for 3 small defenders.
Marley and Heath are our 2 smalls and Toovey next year makes 3.
Sidey is also playing as a small defender, although we want him freed up to be creative.

Shaw has shown he can play on some small forwards but is better suited to the mediums.

Toovey has shown he can play on just about anyone, the gorilla forwards might be just beyond his grasp. Think he would actually be taking Goldsack's spot if he was available.

Sidey has been playing loose across the half back line but a "defender" has to have some 1x1 defensive capacity or accountability and Sidey isn't overly endowed with this. And he lacks a yard to match up with the best small forwards.

So at the moment that leaves Williams and Sinclair to take on that roll. Well untill someone comes through the VFL and demands a senior game in that position. Ramsay could. Mooney might even be a possibility in the longer term. With Johnno retiring there aren't too many others currently on the list.

As it stands Sinclair is an auto selection at least for the rest of this season. He was good again on the weekend but disappeared a bit in the second half. The point though is that when the match was there to be won he was very good so I don't really get any of the comments that he only plays well when the side plays well (he's played quite well in a few of our losses as well I've noticed). Also his field kicking isn't half as bad as some are claiming. I think people really need to disassociate themselves from his form early on in his career and as a small forward to what he has produced the last half season. Since moving back he's proven almost everyone wrong and has proven his worth as an AFL quality defender. Good on him because I thought his career was over at about round 5 this season.

Agree. It's his spot until he stuffs up or someone is playing that well at VFL level that they force him out of the side.

Since he has gone back what has he done wrong? His kicking is bad sometimes. Well he isn't on his own there.

I don't recall any small forward getting hold of us which happened a lot last year. Not saying he is a gun but as far as best 22 goes he is in it. Even with Toovey coming back next year. If he continues the way he is going he will be best 22 next year. Would still like to see him play on a Rioli just to see how he goes under the pressure of playing on a gun small forward. But with him down there holding his own it allows so much mo to happen.

With Toovey coming back in we either move Tooves to the midfield and turn him into the pacey tagger we lack or we get Williams in this role and leave Tooves back.

Both have shown they have the capabilities in this role we trialled williams in it last season and Toovey did some good jobs on Judd a few years back.

I was enjoying the read, thinking gee sinkers is getting noticed and then a quote from big footy o_O what? All 11 pages were read apparently :)
Hope I've been good over those 11 pages :D

Edit: I was good, but a couple post I don't remember doing, my account must've been hacked :p

You're infamous stifler's mom!

I've always been a supporter of Sinkers but have been wrong many many times and Connolly using this thread with the benefit of hindsight is a little harsh imo*.

*Unless Rohan reveals his username and where he defended Sinkers in April/May.

You don't listen to your mum and dad, because they're always going to pat you on the back and hug you and tell you everything's going to be all right, and you don't listen to the punters in the crowd that have got a set against you, because they'll just tell you that nothing you do is good enough. Nathan Buckley

Was this quote from the article aimed at Krueger?

nah, he was only speaking about Collingwood, not the whole football team and especially Buckley:p

"On Anzac Day, I just struggled from the get-go and couldn't get involved," he recalls. "I sat down with 'Bucks' [coach Nathan Buckley] during the week after, and he said they were going to send me back to the VFL, and that's when the other guys got injured, so then they came to me and said they were going to give me a trial down back."
At least this rids the theory that it was all Tapping's idea to send him down back.

Does anyone else detect a hint of irony about this post? Sinclair has continued to prove himself capable in the backline. Some posters like TD have been able to recognize this despite original criticism. I wonder if travie/Stifler et al are willing to give any credit?
a couple of better than average games does not make up for 30 or so games of horrible football. but good luck to him. if he plays like he did against essendon then he stays in the team. simple as that. however, if he doesn't then he can't stay in the team because his "average" football is not afl standard.

And he has ever since he got moved to the backline.
