Never said anything bout them going to doon, dont care where they go just think they would be better off without each other!

i have heard that discussions are afoot with merging Longwood and Avenel. Will happen sooner than later. Anyone else heard this whisper as Longwood dont appear to have Redfern as coach and alot have already said they will leave to other clubs for next year because of the repetitive nature of the league and the umpires without spines who do nothing to help clean it up
I have also heard discussions Re: Longwood Avenel merger. I am very interested in this matter so would it be possible to elaborate on what you have heard???

thanks big fella, suzie putt is knitting him up a jumper for next year. He'll join in with the preseason too!:)

So is this league going ahead again next season? Are we still down to only 5 clubs or has Devenish come back into it again next year.
Where would the other clubs go if this league in fact folded? What do players think of only 5 teams and having to play the other sides so many times throughout the home and away season?

Dev were to have their agm this week and were to decide what happened.
Anyone know what the outcome was?

Is there any more word on yhe Longwood/Avenel merger. what league would they be in

Haven't heard anything about this for a while. I would assume that they would play in the KDFL, if they were to merge. My money is that it will not be for the 2008 season, if at all.

Guys, i hope this happens sooner rather than later, i guess if BDFL were maybe even able to gain some more teams that'd be ok.
My thoughts are that Longwood dont even need to merge, they would be competitive without Avenel.

Not hunting for new home

November 15 2007
Shepparton News

Longwood and Bonnie Doon denied rumours yesterday the clubs were looking to leave Benalla District Football League, with representatives of both sides committing to the competition for next year.
A week out from the meeting to determine the fate of struggling former club Devenish, the Redlegs and Bulldogs said they would not be moving.
Longwood and Avenel played as a merged club in the 1960s before splitting to continue as separate entities.
Longwood media officer John Carracher said the club's annual general meeting on October 26 had decided its 2008 season would definitely be played in Benalla District league.
"We had a meeting in the middle of the year to discuss our strategy for what we do as a club going forward," Carracher said.
"Longwood is going to play in the Benalla league next year, there's no truth that we were considering moving to the Kyabram District Football League."
Carracher said the public could be easily misled by interaction between Benalla District league clubs and those outside of the competition.
"When Nagambie offered their ground to us if ours was unsuitable for match days at the start of last season people interpreted that as a merger offer," Carracher said.
"Obviously we've got a bit of history with Avenel having been merged in the past, but regardless of what competition Longwood plays in it's strong enough to be its own club."
Carracher said there wasn't much his side could do about the player, administration and facility shortages of other Benalla District league clubs.
"The future of who we play in this competition is out of our hands," Carracher said.
"We're hoping the initiative of an under18 competition can help grow the league."
Bonnie Doon president Terry Dale said his club was committed to the league next year.
"There hasn't been a suggestion that we would consider a different competition," Dale said.
Devenish - inactive this season - will hold a meeting at its club rooms on Wednesday and will fold if a committee is not formed.

LONGWOOD REDLEGS PRESENT PAST AND FUTURE 2008
Longwood’s long wait is over with the release of the magnificent DVD set celebrating the living thing which is the Redlegs and Blue and commemorating the 1977 premiership and reunion on 07/07/07.

But more on that in a minute.

The Annual General Meeting has been run and won and the dedicated team have put their hands up to take on the task of raising the flag of the Benalla and District Football Netball League in season 2008.
Andrew Burke continues his great guidance as President with ’77 star Gordon Grant as Vice-President. “Super Secretary” Barb Porter is back with her dedication and Anne Moore has picked up the valued task of Treasurer.
“Burkie” thanked retiring members Ali McDiarmid, John Frewen and John Carracher for their outstanding involvement in the committee and looked forward to their continuing contributions to the work ethic that is needed for the Redlegs to be a successful family on the football ground and on the court.
The 2008 team was completed by the election of committee members, Ian Moore, Harry Hargood, Bim Mitchell, Cate Burke and Dale Sutherland. All have made tremendous contributions to the Club in the past and are congratulated to volunteer for the exciting times ahead.
The Longwood Football Netball Club is committed to remaining in the Benalla & District Football Netball League and to working with the League to change pre-conceived ideas of this competition and to encourage other clubs to join.
For instance. In the past some cynics have suggested that the B & D stands for “Bash and Dash”! A concept from the old VFA days where ageing players would get their “kicks” out of sniping younger players. Get real .. those days are long gone. Apart from the odd incident; which is the norm for any league mind you .. including the AFL, the B&DFNL is a well administered competition which provides a fair base for players of both genders to enjoy sport on a Saturday and the family social fun that comes with it. The League is also implementing an “11 a side” modified junior match as a third level in 2008.
All clubs have worked tirelessly to have safe playing surfaces on grounds and courts, with dressing rooms, catering and social facilities of excellent standard. Longwood’s Redlegs Stadium would be the bench mark of the League.
Yea have gone south to the Yarra Valley league but clubs surrounding the BDFNL; which are struggling for success, would be well advised to move their numbers to the Benalla League.
ON YA BIKE .. SON!
One chance in 500 seems steep but considering 8.38 million to 1 are the odds of winning Satd’y Lotto, a one in five hundred chance to win a $26K Harley Davidson in the Redlegs major raffle seems like a lucky dip at the Euroa Show!
Tickets are $100 each ( but eh.. twenty five bucks each in a foursome syndicate ..), and the prize will be drawn in four weeks at the White Hart Hotel on Frid’y, 14-Dec07.
Call Andrew Burke asap on 5798 5200 or speak to any committee member.
BRODIE’S DVD A BEWDY
The Redlegs 2007 Reunion DVD twin set and celebration of the ’77 Premiership is now available.
A fantastic effort compiled by Kevin Brodie, produced by Alexander Brodie and filmed by Stephanie Brodie is rated “PG” for “Pretty Grouse”! John Carracher has contributed some archival film of the seventies .. not only the premiership match replay, but of the social fabric of the times. There are reunion interviews with local identities Max Cox, Max “Cracker” Withers, Roy Seach, Mick Williams, “Batman and Robin” .. Paul Redfern and Ray Robins, Chris “Fox Canty and Jean Hamilton.
Not only great stories but fair dinkum “lol” yarns! (That’s “Laugh Out Loud” for those without kids who text messages on their mobiles ..)
Cost is $25 for the twin set, which includes postage. Disc 1 is of 2007, while Disc 2 is the game on Sund’y 18-Sep1977 and the Mad Mond’y celebrations which went on for a fortnight!
If your heart beats true for the Redlegs and Blue, this treasure will be one to enjoy now and pass on as a family heirloom!!
Many thanks to the talents of Kevin, Stephanie and Alexander.
Phone your order to Barb Porter on 5798 5282 or at the Longwood Store with Cate and Andrew Burke on 5798 5200.
You’ll curse yourself if you miss out!!

Better days: Bonnie Doon and Devenish go at it in the 2004 grand final.

Devenish Football Club will fold tonight if it cannot find a last-minute replacement for its outgoing administration, according to club secretary Mick Brown.
After spending this year in recess, Devenish has made repeated calls to its town and football community for a president, secretary and treasurer to step forward and save the club.
But with those calls unanswered and the only interest sparked coming from potential coach Brad Frampton, the Barbers look set to approve a motion of notice to fold.
The Barbers won premierships in 2003 and 2005 in Benalla District Football League, but after finishing bottom of the ladder in 2006 spent this season in recess.
Short on players, facilities and water to maintain its ground, a dedicated administration to rectify the problems has escaped the Barbers' desperate hunt.
Additionally, no administrators currently at Devenish have been able to undertake the workload of organising and operating a football department.
Brown said previous meetings held by the club had failed to spark anything more than minimal interest.
"Devenish is like a lot of towns where there are not a lot of young people from their 20s to their 40s with the passion to get involved with a footy club and have the energy to take on the commitment," Brown said.
"I can only hope that a few people can turn up unexpectedly tonight, but if a committee cannot be formed then the club will fold."
Brown said his best memory of more than a decade with the Barbers was its breakthrough premiership win in 2003.
The Barbers broke a 74-year premiership drought with its 19-point defeat of Longwood in the 2003 grand final.
Its previous flag had come in the Benalla Line Football Association in 1929.
"Devenish has always been known as a friendly group and a team that did struggle," Brown said.
If Devenish folds, its last win on the field will be the August 2006 victory away to Tatong, 18. 13 (121) to 16.11 (107), the Barbers' only win of the season.
The meeting will start at 7.30 pm tonight at the Devenish Football Club rooms.

Unkindest cut of all

Devenish Football Club agreed to a voluntary wind-up last night after outgoing president Peter Alexander seconded a motion to fold the club from secretary Mick Brown.
The Barbers will submit the paperwork to the Victorian Country Football League in the coming days, terminating its operation as a football club and consigning its playing days to history.
Benalla District Football League premiers in 2003 and 2005, Devenish failed to rally enough support in its community and could not to fill the required positions of president, secretary and treasurer last night.
In front of a meeting of 10 people, Brown and Alexander met no resistance as they agreed to move Devenish from recess to cancellation.
According to Brown the series of meetings since the club's last onfield season in 2006 - in which it won just one match - never looked like raising the support necessary to keep the Barbers alive.
Devenish spent this year in recess and decided against the option of a further year due to there being no evidence the team could ever retake the field.
"It's very much a sad day," Alexander said.
"Since we won the premiership in 2003 the general interest in the community died off."
The Barbers ended a 74-year premiership drought with its 2003 flag.
"The community has changed and farms are getting bigger, so there are less people out there," Alexander said.
"There are not as many young people out there," Brown said.
Despite the option for the club to one day be revived from the ashes should a committee step forward, Alexander and Brown said it was unlikely.
"I personally don't think so," Alexander said.
"This is reality, this is where a lot of football clubs are heading."
Former Benalla AllBlacks under-18s coach Brad Frampton had put his hand up to coach and recruit for Devenish should it form a committee.
"I'm shell-shocked," Frampton said.
"Disappointed with the lack of support in the community.
"A footy club is the heart and soul of a country town like this."
Devenish Sporting Club which manages the enterprise of the football ground and club rooms will continue to operate.

Loss of hub hurts

Shepparton News

Take a drive through the township of Devenish and the remnants of a once-flourishing farming community are everywhere.
But shopfronts boasting architecture characteristic of the town's early 20th century heyday have become tired and neglected, as steady migration has one-by-one forced them to close.
The town's football team became the latest casualty on Wednesday evening when, after years of struggling to field a team, locals finally decided to accept the inevitable and the club officially ceased to exist.
Secretary Mick Brown said there was an air of resignation about the decision, after the club was forced into voluntary recess after being unable to field a team in the Benalla District Football League this year.
"It wasn't a surprise but it's the end of an era," he said.
Mr Brown blamed the expansion of largescale farming for the gradual decline of the team, with the era of smaller, family-owned farms and their plentiful supplies of sons to populate the local footy team long gone.
Long-standing ladies auxiliary secretary Diane Young agreed.
She recalled the days when towns smaller than Devenish bolstered the ranks of the BDFL to as many as 12.
With Devenish's demise, it has just five teams left.
"I can remember when Thoona, St James and these tiny district towns all had teams," Mrs Young said.
"But one-by-one they've gone and now it's Devenish's turn.
"The hub has gone - nothing will replace the football club."
Devenish Railway Hotel bar manager Stuart Cooper agreed the town's declining population was not conducive to fielding a team.
But he said the death knell for the football club did not signal the same for the town.
"The community spirit is absolutely still there, it's just the people are not," he said. "But the town's fairly quiet on a Saturday these days."
