My thoughts. No key forwards gave us no hope when you looked at the opposition that was the difference. I could barely see the far side of the ground so i may have missed a few things.

Lonergan was his usual hard and tough. Didnt play a full game.

Hooker played on Thompson for most of it. Was all over him in the first half. Thompson got a few in the second half but mainly marks from leads. We've suddenly got a bit of depth in defence. Him and Tyson Slattery are good combination to have at this level.

Houli and Atkinson had plenty of possesions but most resulted in turnovers. May have been the lack of options to kick to.

Myers was half back most of it. Was solid. Kicked a ripping goal.

Jetta played in the middle and forward. Didnt do a lot.

Magin showed his class but had a lot of quiet patches. Worth persisting with.

A few were missing from last week. Williams must have got rubbed out and Still didnt play.

No Nat-rat or Nash

Is there any word on who is in doubt for todays match? Trainging reports had Henry leaving the track. He would have been an option to go to Harvey

NLM AND NASH?
ah shit
that must mean two late changes?

Not as detailed report from me simply becasue i watched the game from the boundry and it was hard to see who was doing the in and under work around the packs on the other side of the ground. The black numbers on the jumpers hardly stood out.

One problem Bendigo have is trying to impliment our senior game plan at VFL level is a problem simply becasue they can not switch the ball backwards under the different rules.
Also the lower level of skills and body size of a few of the Bendigo listed players leads us to going around in circles with crazy handballs to stationary targets.

Jetta. Thought he was pretty good. Played a lot through the middle and kept going all night. Set up a few goals.

Lonergan. Did not think he had a massive game around the ground. Hard to comment on what he did in close becasue most of the play was opposite where i was watching from.

Myers. Though he was steady rather than good. Played mainly half back with a few runs through the middle. Not sure i would have put him in the best.

Hooker. Very good. Kept Thompson under control until our midfield stopped. Then he had problems becasue the footy was coming inside 50 very easily and often. Must have been going ok becasue Thommo got frustrated enough to give Hooker a face massage when they went to ground at one stage.
Has really improved a heap from last year.

Magin.Came in and out og the game. Starting to look a bit better. Did some good stuff without getting big numbers.

T Slattery. Ok in defence. Gave a few good running options but not huge possessions.

Atkinson. Has started to get his run and bounce back. Just needs to get his kicking sorted.

Carroll. Quiet game.

Houli. Play half back and midfield. He simply has no idea at half back. Has not got a defensive thought running through his head. Runs off to chase the footy and does not return to his man until the next center bounce.
His work in the midfield is good as he finds a head of the ball.
Has to back hinself to run through the lines more and use his kicking skills to advantage rather than going in circles looking to give quick handballs all the time.

Bellchambers. Good in the first half. Struggled after half time.

German. I hardly saw him but he could have been in and under and i could not see his in close work.

Bock. Reasonable at times up forward. Kicked a couple of goals. Just average overall.

Klemke. Runs hard and tries to be involved but struggle to find a lot of the footy.

See this a bit in the senior team as well, the "hot potato" stuff. I'm hoping it's due to the group not playing 50-100odd games together yet, and they are yet to develop a firm understanding with their team mates. The other reason is of course work rate.

Can someone (Ant or LemonChicken) answer a few questions on Hooker:

Who did he play on? VFL listed player, AFL listed player?
Why was he so good? spoils? Marks? Body Contact? Posession?
When could he step up to AFL level?

After seeing him last week, he was very good, any chance that we could play one of Daniher or Ryder up forward and slot in Hooker at CHB, or not yet, se if he can keep up his good form.

Why do we keep persisting with Houli off a Back Flank when everyone can blatantly see that he has no deffensive side to his game. Why do we keep persisting with him there. play him forward, or get rid of him. I know he is still young, but he is not exactly learning much and improving.

How did Bellchambers look in the ruck, any good, tap work, around the ground, skills, etc?

any answers would be great. thanks guys.

Hooker played on Nathan Thompson (ex North, Hawks) 1st half he completelt towelled him up, got a fist to everything, ran off him, was our best player by a mile. 2nd half Thompson kicked a couple but at least 2 of those were goods kicks to a lead with no midfield pressure. Thompson went off the ground maybe midway of the last qtr.

I thought Ryder played forward today when he wasnt in the ruck. 2 marks from a big man isnt really enough anyway.

Bellchambers was aginst Goldstein and a VFL listed player. Doesnt seem to concentrate for 4 qtrs. Has good patches here and there but wouldnt say he was the dominant big man from any games ive seen.

Atkinson needs to learn how to hand the ball off to the first option. Would beat a player then repeatedly cough the pill up because he tried to do too much.
Agree Houli doesn't know how to spell defence.
Thought Lonergan was impressive in the packs. Incredibly strong in and under. Should come straight into seniors next week.
Hooker again was solid and definately deserves the chance of a senior game.
Thought the lights at Werribee were poor for VFL. Game was played on the far side for most of the night and it was extremely hard to pick out players.

hey ant (or anyone else who knows), i haven't seen a bendigo game yet this year. how has cramieri been travelling?

Reasonable. Has not been bad but hasnt hit his top form either.

Ant,
Would there be a case to play Houli in the midfield and down forward in the seniors?
I don't think he is a backline player at all.
He did play a lot in the forward line as a junior.
Your thoughts?

Then who do you take out of the side for him to play an attacking non defensive role ?
Playing half back is not about turning him into a defender. It about teaching him you can not just run around chasing kicks at AFL level.
Bachers problem is all the way through juniors he has been the go to player or the star. It was always a case of let Bacher have the footy because he is the most damaging.
Nothing much changed at TAC Cup level. He was allowed to play at half forward a lot and just run to where he wanted.

At the moment Stants ,Watson and to a lesser degree Winderlich are the only players that are given a bit of lattitude on defensive actions in various games. I do not see Houli pushing them out of the side.

The obvious spot is Dysons but Ricky has shown in the seniors this year that he does work both ways and is prepared to go in hard front on ( something that Houli does not like) . It is too bad becasue Houli is a much better player than Dyson but we can not simply load up the side with players who are going to run around with scant regard to their opponent which is why Dyson has stayed in.

I agree with everything you've said here....
What about putting McPhee in the backline, Drop Dyson and bring in Houli and play him up in the forward line. I don't know why I just think he will grow in confidence there!
I maybe wrong but it's worth a try (I think), we get Lonergan back this week as well so there is another defensive tackling option.
I think he should play to his strengths first and then teach him the defensive side of the game, build his confidence up and his body along the way and start making those tackles stick.
I would even consider him in Monfries role.
I know you wont agree but I just think he is too good of a player to be in our seconds....
I don't think half back is the spot for him.

That's what I want to know. He must be playing real shit if he's in the Bendigo Reserves. A team that gets thumped by 100 points each week.

He was concussed two weeks ago, and missed this week as a result.

Two things.
Despite McPhee being an AA half back his form over the last 4 years as a defender has been ordinary. He has never captured his best form again and he is an ordinary decision maker under pressure.

Secondly what sort of message does it send to the young players if you just give up and select a player despite the fact he can not carry out what the coach wants or can not grasp whatr the coach wants from him in the game plan.
If he is to be a serious midfielder at AFL level then he has to learn these things. I dont think half back will be his spot either but how hard can it be. If Dyson can transform part of his game and become a bit harder at the contest and improve his tackle count then what is Houlis problem with doing it ?

Ant - Adam Mcphee played hes best form in the back line and was he All Australian a thew years ago i wen he was in the backline i think? and now he is in the forward line and he hasnt been the same since, why not put him in the back line?

He was moved to the forward line because his form in defence was below par. He's a good option up forward if he can just hang on to those marks that he SHOULD be taking.

Like ant said, he's very panic'y in defence and fumbles a lot. Caused many heart attacks over the last few years lol.

Wrong.
He was AA in 2004 when he won the B&F.Yes he was at half back then.
His form was poor in 2005 becasue he struggled with a groin injury.
He also played 2006 and 2007 in defence and was bloody awfull.
Dont come on and tell me he was great in defence . He has also been ordianry in the back half for 3 seasons since he was AA.

How can you say he has not been the same since he moved forward when he has 3 crap years in defence after 2004.
The games he played in the forward line last year where a huge improvment on the games he spent in defence between 2005 and 2007.

The answer to why not put him in the back line is easy. The last 4 years have proven he is no good there despite playing well as a half back flank in 2004.
You can not pick todays side from form someone showed 5 seasons ago.

The long and the short of it is if he held his marks 90% of the time we would not be having this discusion.
