Surely has to be much more competitive this week?

From Pazza on BB

Okay.

33 pts down @ halftime.

Laycock looking good in the ruck but not getting much help.

Prismall, Reimers and Skipworth ok in patches.

Daniher at half forward - Hurley being beaten by Riewoldt.

Spike, Myers, Atkinson and Nash patchy - Scotty has hardly seen it.

Could be a wet second half

Hurley B.O.G. again, two weeks in a row.. too good for bendigo, get him back in the seniors
Good to see Laycock and Prismall in the best..
Scotty? anyone know how he played??

Got this from BB..
Boots, Hurley, Laycock, Prismall, Slattery and Ako played very very well

Bock was beaten in the ruck.

Nash had poor decision making aswell but did afew good things

Myers was good but didnt star

Lucas was good at times but went quiet abit aswell, at this level he should be kicking more than 3 goals a week.

Quinn, long way off a recall

Daniher played very well but i think he will remain in the 2s

Mcveigh had a quiet game, would say he will play Bendigo next week..

Skippy was great through the middle

Prismall, Boots and Skippy mite all be a chance to get recalled next week..
Laycock will get another run

Well I was at the game and I took some notes. I left at 10m if the last. Excues me if I miss a player etc it was my first time and it took me until half time to figure out who was who.

McVeigh played well in the first half, had heaps of it, was strong, used it well and wasn't afraid to go in for a second effort or knock someone over just for the hell of it. Didn't show any problems with his run. Sat out most of the 3rd and went to the bench for the 4th. came on just as I was leaving.

Laycock dominated the ruck, but so he should have, he was against a bunch of second sting triers at best. That didn't bode well for Bock but he's a young bigman. Laycock kidded two massive goals in the 3rd from outside 50.

Skipworth had a bit of it. was good to hear him in the huddle at 3qrt time and his leadership. Bendigo had kicked a few in the 3rd and looked at least competitive. Mentioned now was the time to play on at all costs. Hickmont said this at the main group talk as well. Coburg then went on to kick the next 4:eek:

Reimers I didn't really see much of, but when you did it had an impact. His effort is fantastic. Had two great smothers and layed a tackle in the 2nd that was worthy of note. Might have missed his times near the ball but it looked like he didn't have much of it though.

Quinn looks bloody fantastic and dreadfull at the same time. Had some shocking skill errors, kicked it out on the full by the proverbial 10 rows at one point but he looks so good around the play with the way he moves. One bit that stood out was a tackle he laid in the last where he absolutely creamed him with a briliant chase down, but was all over his back. Still with the skills he a bit off, hope he can get through that cos he's one of the best persons to hear gee up his team mates in the huddle breakup

Myers had a good 2nd quater but I'm worried the kid has no brains. He was playing down back at the start he seens to run off his opponet to assist his team mates when the ball is being cdontested buy half the players out there, a contested possie and his man was playing lose across half forward. He's a bit of an athlete though and he looks good in close. Reads the ball well in a contest but not at all 2-3 steps ahead.

Lucas had a first half to forget. Moved like a B double in reverse. Started to do alright in the second half. Unlikely he'd be recalled though.

Prismall. BOG

Hurley got beaten by Reiwoldt in the first half and then moved forward and got in it a bit in the 3rd. I wouldn't have put him in our best though

Daniher moved on to Reiwoldt in the 3rd and got a clap by the players during the 3q huddle for his effort. Was struggling when I left as Coburg was all over them. Didn't notice him in the first half.

Nash makes some poor desicions.

Great work Drew! Really appreciate the summary.

Did Hurley get much of the ball himself in the first half?

Can you elaborate on Prismalls game?

To be honest I didn't see Hurley much, and that's because I wasn't looking for him. I just forgot until I read that report which said he was on Riewoldt, and he kick a few in the first half. It took me a while to figure out he was number 12 ;) so I spent more time one him in the 3rd. Walking up at 3qtr time though and standing near them it's amazing how young the guy looks. He honestly looks looks like he has a lot of puppy fat but everything about him looks long. He's going to be a fuking powerhouse when he hits the weights and grows. Had a better time up forward than down back.

Prismall was a running machine for intermitent game time, spent a lot of time coming on and off the bench. Didn't look like his knee fazed him at all, pulled up a tad in the 3rd and for a second it looked like he had done his hamstring, but he was running like the wind to a contest seconds later. I paid a lot of attention to him and his skills were quite good. The report said he kicked one but I think it was actually 2. Bendio played their best in the 3rd and he kicked 2 in a minute on the run. He kicked over 40m to a teammate on the lead with a dude 1 step behind him and gave the defender no chance a coupe of times. His effort stood out for a Bendigo team that honestly, is pretty flat footed.

good to hear Pris is coming back well. Loved the way he played at the cats and was pretty disappointed he wanted to leave us last year.
Best of luck to the lad.

Hurley B.O.G. again, two weeks in a row.. too good for bendigo, get him back in the seniors
Good to see Laycock and Prismall in the best..
Scotty? anyone know how he played??

No way Hurley was B.O.G. He got pantsed by Riewoldt in the first half. He was ok in the forward line after half time.
Never trust the Bendigo best players list. It rarely reflects what actually happened on the day.

The thing that stikes you when you watch a Bendigo game is the distinct lack of any real game plan. You can see them try and create run through handball but a lot of it is to stationary targets or players under pressure.
There is no real run from the second recievers or space being created and they end up over cooking the handball or just kicking to a contest.
I dont really know what to say about it other than at least we are getting game time into our blokes and they are learning the spots on the ground that we want them to play. It is a pretty young side overall running around most weeks including a few of the Bendigo listed players so it will be hard for them to be competative for four quarters.
I suspected that what happened in the last quarter yesterday would happen. A few players simply ran out of gas and we got run over. Despite having a few very good inns they where well short of match practice.
There are a few of the better Bendigo listed players on the injured list as well so that does not help.

Prismall had a few possessions. Played off half back a bit with a few runs through the midfield. Steady enough game but was more workman like than great. Made a few skill errors along the way. Still looks to me like he needs a couple more weeks.

McVeigh Not convinced his ankle is right. Did not have a lot of game time and struggled to get a kick at various stages. Seemed to get more annoyed as the game went on. If his ankle is ok then he was well short of a run and would be looking at another game for Bendigo next week.

Nash not much you can say when Oakley Nicholls gives you the run around. Ordinary.

Skipworth started really well. First half was great. Got a lot of the ball, won a few clearances and was one of our better players. Ran out of gas in the second half.

Hurley The fact that he was named best shows how much of a joke the Bendigo best 6 is. Riewoldt beat him in the first half and when he was not on Riewodlt he struggled with Cleave Hughs. Nothing seemed to go right for him . Moved forward after half time and after a slow start he found his way a bit and took some good marks and kicked a goal. His second half was mutch better but overall he had a dirty day.

Myers solid. Won a bit of the ball and contributed well. The trouble he had was when he got the ball and looked to run from half back there where no options forward for him to kick to for most of the game. Watching him run around i am sure he has some sort of groin niggle. He has a bit of the OP suffle going on when he runs.

Lucas Ok game. Most forwards are going to struggle given the supply issues inside 50 that Bendigo have. He was double teamed a lot which does not help. The issues though is his pace and turning circle. He is like an oil tanker and players are running off him . Sylvester had a few possessions by simply taking off and leaving Lucas in his wake.
As soon as the ball hits the ground he is shot as his mobility is about half what it used to be.

Laycock played ruck and looked good. Had possessions around the ground. Kicked a goal and was one of our better players. He tried hard in the second half but as you would expect he slowed down to a walk in the last quarter. Did what he had to do and would be close to playing the same role in the seniors that Bellchambers plays after another gam next week IMO.

Daniher started forward in the first half and struggled to get into the game. His leading was good but the delivary was ordinary or they simply did not kick it in his direction. Moved to defence in the second half and did a pretty good job containing Riewoldt until midway into last quarter when the ball was streaming into the forward line on a regular basis. I thought he did enough under the circumstances.

Magin was going along ok until he hurt his shoulder.

T Slattery played defence and did not hav much of the ball.

Reimers looked rusty and short of a run but there where a few of the trade mark Reimers runs from the wing. Another couple of weeks and he should be ready to go.

Atkinson In and out of the game. No where to be seen when he was needed in the last quarter.

Quinn one of our better players. He makes a few mistakes but somehow they stand out more and he gets bagged a bit for them. More than likely becasue of unusal style. The fact of the matter is he rarely makes more mistakes than a lot of the more seasoned players it is just the fact that you never know what is coming from him that puts you on the edge of your seat.
I still think his progress is going really well. He reads the play better than a lot of guys on our list.

German solid enough game although he did drift out of it after half time.

Bock did not do much at all.

Anyone not mentioned did not play ;)

it is quite clear and understandable that Essendon don't care too much about results for Bendigo however do you think it's a fair point for players coming back from a long layoff through injury and who are only going to play limited game time to come back through the VFL reserves. My reasoning for this is because it would be less taxing on their bodies in the reserves for the first match and isn't beneficial to Bendigo who were trying to win their first game of the season and they need players who can run out the whole game.

Maybe the second week back the player should be promoted to the VFL seniors.

Thanks for the write-up, guys. Ant, I always look forward to your take from Bendigo. In light of your comment on Myers, I'd just like to quote a post of mine from after the Carlton game in round 3 :D. Not saying I'm being vindicated, but it is interesting.

On a side note, I'm no medical expert, but from my own experience and watching a lot of sport, I have a theory. Watching Myers lumbering (at stages) on Saturday night, it appeared to me that perhaps he's struggling with a slight abdominal/groin problem; maybe even without his own knowledge. Obviously the trainers are paid to be aware of these things, but there are instances where it doesn't become fully obvious for some time. Just to clarify though, that's purely one man's stab at a theory; it's not me pushing any rumours.
